Or even Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
Especially Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan!
This... explains... so much.

I say Bull**** to this cynical nonsense.
We like them, and it hasn't done anything except help us realize our potential.
A big fat *raspberry* to the entire concept.
I LOVE The American President.
Ahem. They, uh... they may have given me, um, unreasonable expectations about love...
Just maybe.
ETA: God, how I love The American President!
In my opinion, romantic comedies are about the most difficult kind of film to make. Put another way, they're the easiest to muck up. Having said that, it only makes gems like The American President and Arthur all the better. And while it's trendy to mock Julia Roberts here, I think My Best Friend's Wedding is a terrific romantic comedy.
Not a big fan of MBFW. The script's too writer-y. Cameron Diaz saying, "I was just like all those flighty nitwits I'd always pitied"...nah.
What a ridiculous study! Do they take into account the fact that these are MOVIES? I think a more valid study would be research on people who believe films are real life. Next, we'll be blaming Spielberg for believing in alien life forms. I personally am grateful my life does not resemble a Lynch or Tarantino film. After watching Friday the Thirteenth or Halloween, are teens upset that they have yet to be hacked up by a slow-moving seemingly-invincible psycho murderer? If anyone should be blamed for the unrealistic expectations of a romantic comedy, it should be the audiences that place those expectations on themselves in the first place. As for me, I'm still waiting waiting for for my friends and family to burst out into a familiar ABBA song apropos to any given situation.
PS - If any recent romantic comedy deserves to be a Broadway musical, it is My Best Friend's Wedding.
I've never seen any of these films.

What are all these stupid studies about anyway? Just because a study has been done does'nt mean it's valid.
I like a good romantic movie because it shows that somewhere in this world there are people that are really in love and having a wonderful time. O.K. it's rare, but it happens.

They found fans of films such as Runaway Bride and Notting Hill often fail to communicate with their partner.
Many held the view if someone is meant to be with you, then they should know what you want without you telling them.
One of the best relationships I was in was with a partner who didn't speak my languages well, nor did I understand his. We stopped having arguments because it was too much time and effort to explain things so we just said "forget it" and went on to other things. Oh, but we communicated well! (no sarcasm here)
Knotting Hill is my guilty pleasure movie, lol I just love it!!
