They replied with "Land Shark," "it's Mongo," or "Candy gram from Mongo," if my memory is correct.
I guess I was thirteen leaving the movie theater thinking this was the best movie ever. But it really was the thrill of seeing it in the theater at that age, in that era, some of you young folk totally get it.
There were more then one Landshark Sketch. One response was just mumbling.
Oh, I loved the mumbling ones!
And a film that is much better than the book. Still quite rare that
Which version are they showing? The Blu-Ray? Does anyone else recall what I refer to as the "NBC Version," which had to fill a 3 hour slot and had all of these cutting room floors scene, including a long unseen one with Mrs. Kintner? And a huge chunk of the armada that was new? It's the flabbiest version, the front end goes on much too long, and absolutely not Spielberg's. Yet I recall how odd it was to see all of these scenes never revealed before.
They are showing the original movie that opened in the theaters 40 years ago with the same soundtrack in the original 2.0.
I was at the 7pm showing in Chelsea. The rest of the world was either at BAM seeing the Into the Woods reunion or pre-gaming for Bares, but, for many, many reasons, I wasn't going to miss JAWS on the big screen.
Jesus Christ this movie is almost perfect. I say 'almost' because I think I noticed a continuity thing I never noticed before. I seemed as though there were six barrels on the Orca and, after three were dispatched, there were still four barrels left on deck.
I've seen JAWS a million times on a TV screen, but never in a theater. It really plays as an entirely different movie. Although I know all of the scares down to the second, it still overwhelmed me with fear in a way it never has. I cannot imagine walking into a movie theater in 1975 and experiencing this without any prior knowledge. The direction and cinematography are masterful, the performances are terrific and I was never so happy to be sitting in a movie theater. If you haven't had the chance to go yet, see it this Wednesday. It's worth it.
I still have small puncture scars on my shoulder from where the friend I went with on opening day in 1975 dug her nails into me at the first scare. It drew blood.
"No, it deserves the John Doyle treatment with Jabberjaw and his band. "
There is greatness in this statement. I totally see it.
