I liked last night's episode a good deal. I liked the Russian River setting, and Dom's roommate appearing, it all worked very well for me. Jonathan Groff is only getting more appealing, damn him, but he's got his work cut out for him in making me believe that Patrick is really so naive as to not see that the FB situation with Kevin is just and only that.

We'll see where it goes. I'm looking forward to it. Especially if they continue to show Murray Bartlett shirtless.

I liked the episode, too.

And I don't think Patrick really believes it's only that. He's the kind of person who tries to appear better than he behaves.

I, too, really enjoyed the season premiere, though I agree that the 'House In Virginia' line was kinds sh!tshow. I enjoyed the Faerie representation and had no trouble buying that Paddy has never done Molly/E. The number of gay friends I judge for never having done the drugs is shocking. These are the queens that are gonna hit 40 and do coke for the first time and then it's gonna get every kind of ugly.

Right -- maybe I didn't say it right -- Patrick seems to believe that there's more to his FB situation with Kevin, and it seemed to me that Kevin's making it pretty clear that there isn't.

As a homosexual man in his 40's the only drug I've dabbled in was 420 and that was well over 15 years ago. I've never had tried or have had the desire to try any others. I don't say this as a judgement as it's not my place to I just say it to point out that some of "us" do exist. LOOKING - Season 2

Eh, Roscoe...I've been in a FB situation with a taken man that turned a little too emotional for a while. It's moved forward into real friendship, but it got dodgy there for a bit. And I'm older than Patrick.

Son -- yeah, point taken, these things do happen. I'm hoping they manage to make it work onscreen without me rolling my eyes at Patrick's behavior too much. It does seem to be the point, though -- there was that discussion about "have you ever done something that surprised yourself?"

True...the situation rings true for me, but that doesn't mean the show will handle it well. But I live in hope.

The "house in Virginia" line was truly laughable- and pointless. Just say he's positive and get it over with. I've never seen or heard of anyone today referring to being HIV+ in any other way.

Also, I kind of wish we saw Doris on a jet ski with lesbians.

Kad -- yeah, but I thought the "house in Virginia" line rang true in coming from Agustin who's shown to be more than a bit of a dick.

The character of Doris has become kinda fascinating to me. It's a total inverse of the 'Magical Negro' or 'Magical Homo' trope. Bitch shows up and suddenly ALL the air comes flooding back into the room and everyone can laugh and be happy again. Most importantly, they can f*ck again, while poor Doris rides off unseen on a jetski with a lesbian. Lauren Weedman is just sensational in this show.

Agree with both those observations. I don't really care for Agustin though, he's a creep.

I think I'd rather watch a show about Doris 'looking' for love then what we're getting now!

Re: all the pearl clutching over "House In Virginia", surely we're all capable of making a distinction between a character who makes some regrettable choices and says awful things and the creators of the show. Perhaps it's a generational thing, but I fail to understand why every character in this show has to be representative of all gay men or be a perfect moral beacon. Surely things have come far enough that we can have flawed - and even detestable - gay characters and not feel outraged and victimized.

Anyway, looking forward to next week's reactions to ep 2 from those of you who "won't" be watching.

Oh, and, Eric - YES! Nile Rodgers' remix of Sister Sledge's "Lost in Music" is the EXACT song I was talking about it. Never heard it before and I adore it. Especially from 3:35 on. What a perfect song choice. Cheers!

Hi. It's me. I know. I created the other thread to not pollute this one with my "hold on a minute, fellas" but… since I was the one who brought up the Virginia outrage… it's just because it SEEMS like a line a group of writers would come up with by looking at the Urban Dictionary (which also contains a FILTHY meaning for the word "Dollypop") rather than listening to what is said anywhere around them or within the community they are filming. Is all.

To me the whole show reiterates the worst cliches about vacuous California airheads. I suppose every location on the planet has its own airheads and certainly they are in the minority, but this show manages to be insulting to actual California airheads.

I'm still steaming over what a bunch of ingrates they were to be all snarky about Scott Bakula's painting.

"Kad -- yeah, but I thought the "house in Virginia" line rang true in coming from Agustin who's shown to be more than a bit of a dick."

And a pretentious dick, at that--it sounds completely like a phrase he would use. I could never picture his character being so straightforward as just calmly saying "oh and he's positive," or something similar. I DO think that even in one episode they managed to make Augustin SLIGHTLY more... likeable may be too strong a word. Or maybe it's just the haircut.

"And I don't think Patrick really believes it's only that. He's the kind of person who tries to appear better than he behaves. "

Right. I had a friend who felt Patrick was regressing (if that's possible :P ) by acting even more goody goody for much of the episode, but I think in hindsight it was him trying to over compensate for how ****ty, on one level, the thing with Kevin is making him feel. (Still, if that guy is willing to drive over 2 hours for a quickie in the woods, there must be something there.)

"Perhaps it's a generational thing, but I fail to understand why every character in this show has to be representative of all gay men or be a perfect moral beacon. Surely things have come far enough that we can have flawed - and even detestable - gay characters and not feel outraged and victimized. "

Absolutely. I think where the problem is--and I know many of us talked about this last year--is Looking is essentially the *only* major North American gay centered show around, right now. That also ties into why so many gay bloggers reveled in week after week complaining about how boring it was, I think--if there were other shows that fit more into their personal taste as far as style of shows go they would have just given up on it.

Glad I got the song right! Terrific track--it may be my fave disco track Chic produced including their own stuff and the Diana album. (And I admit I'm a little bit impressed that I knew it and you didn't, Horsey :P )

"Most importantly, they can f*ck again, while poor Doris rides off unseen on a jetski with a lesbian. Lauren Weedman is just sensational in this show. "

From the previews, it looks like Doris will be getting her own. I agree with your take on her, though I appreciate that--as much as so far we've only seen her as sorta the one girl hanging around these gay guys, she still comes off like she has her own life.

I side with Namo on that particular line sounding 'Writer's Room.' It was jarring because it didn't feel of a piece.

But now I know what a Dolly Pop is! So yay!

Flawed and even detestable are perfectly viable character traits.

It's stupid that's unforgivable.

Okay, I'll go back to the other kingdom now.

That's my issue with the Virginia line, it did feel writer's room.

"To me the whole show reiterates the worst cliches about vacuous California airheads."

I actually think the chararcters could fit easily into any major modern American city.

Like most of you, I certainly hadn't heard the term "house in Virginia" before, either. However "writers' room" it might sound, I think it does work for Agustin's character. Pretty sure he and Patrick have the oldest relationship on the show and their dynamic has always been young, somewhat foolish naif and hardened, bitter, queen. It is not out of character for Agustin to use an obscure term that he knows Patrick will have no familiarity with. The point is not that the writers (wrongly) think that most seasoned gays will be familiar with this term, but that Agustin knows that Patrick won't know it and, that by using it, he'll still be able to maintain his position in the friendship as the more experienced, world-wise gay and Patrick will remain the somewhat green fresh, young thing.

It's just like the tenured professor at the dinner party who whips out the obscure $65,000 word to describe the situation in Syria, knowing full well that most of the people in attendance will not be familiar with the word.

It's touches like this that make the writing so SMART. But I suppose you all think I'm giving them too much credit.

Staying one step ahead of Patrick wouldn't take that much effort.
