Is that real thing? Do you know what it's called?

The app on the show was called Glorified. I'm assuming it's not real but there has to be something like it already, no?

Kate Jackson took to talk shows warning us that if "the gay community" didn't go out to the movies and support "Making Love," then Hollywood might never make another movie with a gay theme ever again.
Yeah. And look what we got.

I've been chatting about the show with some folks cause I am one of those gays who would have said to Kate Jackson, 'BITCH, I HAVE SEEN IT THREE TIMES. CALM IT.' I do think it's important to support work created by and for gay men. But Light in the Piazza Gay (best. thing. ever.) is taking traumatic brain injuries to new levels. Not since Rosie O'Donnell rode the bus with her sister has someone on television seemed so...simple.
Even if that problem were fixed, my larger problem with the show is the fact that all three of the 'main' characters (Patrick, Dom and Augustine) are of any interest because of the secondary characters that are used to tell us that they're worth our time. For me, there's something profoundly wrong when I start storyboarding my fantasy show starring Chris Perfetti, Daniel Franzese, Lauren Weedman and Scott Bakula before the credits on LOOKING even role.

It really is such an odd choice for the lead of your show. I mean...I know some profoundly stupid kweens...but even they'd be all, 'Girl...get Hooked on Phonics.'

Don't even get me started on the "nobody helped me with my chicken window" plot. Is this considered a storyline? This show is on life support.

I said a while ago that I'd rather see a show based around Doris. And then last week we got it, and it was one of the best episodes.

If it were just Doris, then it'd be Rhoda gettin' black d*ck. I'd still want it to be gay-centric...just not these gays.
And I now have an actual aversion to peri peri chicken.

I feel similarly. It seems like the creators of Looking set out to make a gay show that didn't deal heavily with gay stereotypes or the typical gay storylines- the AIDS epidemic, coming out, marriage equality, etc. And that's a fine goal, but the problem here is that in largely avoiding those topics, the show goes towards the opposite end of the spectrum is kind of about nothing. I'm all for a show about a group of modern gay men, but at least give it some interest. Other than the few bright spots in the supporting characters, the whole enterprise just fizzles.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I still can't figure out they all became friends in the first place. Was that ever explained? It's just such an odd grouping.

"If you think LOOKING is bad, just wait till Logo brings us three new series from the creators of Queer As Folk: CUCUMBER and BANANA and TOFU.
They make LOOKING sounds good. "
There is a thread on it. It's from the writer of the original UK Queer as Folk--zero involvement from Cowen/Lipman and the others in charge of the remake. And I think both are pretty great (Tofu is pointless.) But I also largely love Looking--so... But they are completely different in tone--Russell Davies goes for flashy scenes of very consciously written dialogue--Looking seems to sometimes try too hard to bend over backwards to be low key and natural. If anything Cucumber might suffer from too much story--definitely not one of Looking's problems...
Logo already previewed the first episodes, and as expected they were hacked up to remove any of the nudity and some of the language (it seems odd that a gay pay cable station in the US can't show what a major network in the UK can... But not too surprising.)

I admit this bothers me more with each episode. The writers don't want to give typical tv backstory--fine, but it feels like something should be said. I remember Patrick and Dom apparently hooked up and decided they were better as friends. Pat in this episode mentioned first coming to SF and looking out at the city with Augustin, when I just had assumed that they met after coming to the city...

Several of those movies were pre-Making Love, and few of them were Hollywood. But they all were better movies, so your point stands. I do hate this mantra that gays have a responsibility to watch the show--in the UK some op-ed person said the same about Cucumber. If you don't like the show, don't watch it. I don't even think there's any real proof that that's true--QAF's US remake was a big hit for Showtime and it didn't really lead to anything (except I guess making a lesbian show.) Brokeback Mountain was a big hit for Hollywood and it didn't really lead to anything--not even more tragic gay romances.

Making Love was 1982. Which were before that?
My point was that maybe what Miss Jackson warned would happen turned out to be a good thing.

Sorry, I was thinking 1984 for some reason. Only Querelle was (slightly) before that and maybe V/V.
The problem is, in one sense Kate was probably right. Hollywood would rather say that a gay mainstream movie flopped because people were turned off by the subject matter rather than considering that the movie itself just wasn't good or didn't have much appeal. But if it did leave a hole in the market for the success of foreign films, the new UK queer cinema, etc, than that's hardly a loss. Of course those kinds of films that are seen to appeal to a niche audience rarely get much of a theatrical release anymore, but that's a different issue.

I just watched the episode. Bring back Doris.
How did Murray Bartlett become as annoying as Patrick?
The writing is so predictable and wrongheaded. Every time you think, "Ugh. He's carrying too many dishes bringing him breakfast in bed"--that's exactly when the dishes clatter.
Or you think, "If he wears that sweater to the office, everyone will know they're fuc king"--and then he wears the sweater and basically TELLS everyone they're fuc king.
The only thing that was NOT predictable was the big ol' swinging bear dick.
And Daniel Franzese's acting.

Wait, I mean, nice weather, eh...?
So, either I wasn't paying attention or I need to adjust the contrast settings on my tv, because I didn't realize we got some full frontal Eddie dong. Cute bear dick aside, not a particularly good episode, but after last week's beautiful trip to Modesto, I can deal with a less memorable experience.
