Yay for everyone who can now marry and all allies. This has been a good week overall. And a good end to my birthday week.

I'm hoping that maybe this news will eventually help me to find the courage to tell my family and other people that I identify as biromantic asexual. I know it will not affect everyone getting married. But, here is hoping that things become easier to talk about and more acceptable as well.

When I first heard about the immolating preacher, I was confused and amused more than anything. In that preacher's actual moral guidelines- in most Christian guidelines as a whole- willful, premeditated suicide as a conscious and deliberately chosen act is a mortal sin at best, instant damnation at worst. To commit suicide in protest over someone else's alleged sins- and a sin that, in that specific worldview, could be repented of and forgiven- is to say, "so many other people are going to hell, I will go to hell too." No one wins- even God would lose that coin toss.

To me, that sums up the whole issue in a nutshell: hate so large that you would choose your hate over your God and think nothing of it.

To answer ucjrdud902's question more specifically, yes, there is always a possibility that another Supreme Court could reverse itself or find a way to restrict the holding. The dissenters' invoking the infamous Lochner decision is their way of saying they expect that to happen. The next battleground will be over the conflict with individual religious views, and there is much potential for the Court to create some substantial holes in this ruling.

It therefore really, really, really matters who the next president is, because that person is likely to replace one or more retiring Justices. I am sure this possibility will bring many opponents to the polls to vote for a Republican candidate. I only hope enough young voters understand why this is incredibly important to them and get to the polls to vote for the Democrat.

I haven't had a chance to get on here yet, but wanted to say congratulations to everyone. I was at a teacher workshop Friday morning when the ruling came out. The leader of the workshop I was in stopped to tell us that the SCOTUS ruling had been issued and we as a group of 35-40 (mostly) straight teachers applauded. Given that where I live we're pretty open-minded in general, everyone I talked to on Friday was so happy about this.

Every morning in school the kids have to say the pledge of allegiance. Now, I'm not thrilled about the "under God" part of it, but in part because of the rules against gay marriage I haven't said the pledge out loud in years - I didn't believe in the "with liberty and justice for all" bit at all. We're still not there - there's a lot of issues that still stand in the way of this being true, but we're a lot closer now.
