Too bad they're bothering to show that old has-been at all. I mean, is anyone really still interested? She's gotten really far on almost no talent whatsoever. I suppose that's been her talent.
It's interesting to read how some of the posters here consider her an old has-been, instead of recognizing that this woman, nearing 50 years of age has a better body, is more fit, and can outdance and yes-OUTSING most of the YOUNG wannabes who are popular today. There isn't anyone who puts on a better show at half her age.
You all would be lucky to be such a has-been at her age.
She has become a joke to many and I think that is really sad. The majority of younger people have no concept of the impact that she had on the world. She is without a doubt the artist with the single biggest impact on music in my generation. Now with things like the British accent (which I get,) the Britney/Xtina performance(which I also got,) Kabbalah, horrible films, and whatever else keeps her in the news, it seems that the music is forgotten about. I would be willing to bet that more than half of the people that know about the cross performance controversy don't even know what song she performs while on it. I admit, I have not cared for anything she has released since Music. Now, I do have tons of respect for the world issues she is trying to shed light on and God bless her for speaking out about gay issues and AIDS before anyone else did. It just seems the controversy overshadows the art now. I don't even know if that makes sense. That's just my take on her.
(And for the record, I was joking about the adoption. I think it's fantastic that she is adopting a needy child. Now, I don't think it's really cool that she adopted from a country in which it is illegal to do so when there are so many legally adoptable kids elsewhere, but that is a different argument.)
wow-- if having the top selling concert of the year, a multiplatinum album, and a networth of more than half a billion dollars is the definition of a has been, then i'll gladly be a has been.

"... OUTSING most of the YOUNG wannabes who are popular today ..."
Who are you calling the young wannabes? Any singer under 50 who hasn't reached Madonna-level fame? Because I can think of ten performers whom I've seen in the past year who didn't have their voices go as flat-ass as many times as Madonna's did when I saw the Confessions tour.
thanks for the explanation, Jersey!
The way I look at it, Madonna doesn't have to do another thing if she doesn't want to. She's already made history and her accomplishments, whether they be business (cover of Fortune), sensation, political, sex, music, film, stage, family, or religion oriented-are remarkable.
It doesn't really matter if you don't like her at this point.

What, exactly, are her political accomplishments? Playing a fascist in a flop movie musical?
i thought her political accomplishment was banging jfk, jr. ?
I can out sing and out act her, but that's about it. regardless, few in history will ever accomplish all that she has.
and when I saw the concert, there were tons of teens all around. she's reached a new audience even if it's not as big as her audience for Like a Virgin, Like a Prayer, and Ray of Light plus 'Vogue'. name any artist before the 00s who is selling more albums than she is. she's been doing this for 26 years. and she ain't anywhere near finished.
at what point can an artist just BE. as jane said, she could retire tomorrow and have had a stunning career--a career that would equal 3 or 4 amazing careers.
"Who are you calling the young wannabes?"
Two of them are Brittney Spears and Ashley Simpson. Who are the ten that you mentioned?
"What, exactly, are her political accomplishments?"
Creating the organization for the orphans in Africa.
Also, I should have mentioned her contribution to AIDS research. Matilda Krim honored her at the premiere of "Truth or Dare."
She's always been a nothing to me. My wife is famous for telling how, after I heard her sing "Boderline", I made this prediction that "you'll never hear another song from that insipid no-talent!" So horrible did I think she was. I've really never changed my mind about her. Although, she had a record or two that I liked. She has a mediocre voice, mediocre dancing ability, and isn't very attractive, yet, she became a superstar. That's her talent, as far as I'm concerned. To say she dances and sings better than a lot of today's stars, is saying nothing. I would imagine most people on this board dance and sing better than a lot of today's stars. Everyone I ever worked with in the theater danced and sang better than today's stars. I should think that everyone is entitled to like or not like Madonna. Or, anyone else, for that matter. What's the big deal? It's not as if Madonna need to be defended by people who post on BWW.

Jane, I would agree with you on everything but her accomplishments in film. She has one, MAYBE two, that weren't stinkers.
"To say she dances and sings better than a lot of today's stars, is saying nothing"
that's your opinion.
"
. I would imagine most people on this board dance and sing better than a lot of today's stars.
Please. I'd love to see most of the people on this board put on such a show. LOL!!!!!
" matter. What's the big deal? It's not as if Madonna need to be defended by people who post on BWW."
I'll defend her if I wish.
And the intro to Jay Leno just said...
"...and the music of Kevin Federline!"
I just give up. I will be in the corner smoking a bowl and eating doritos.
Jersey Girl-Yes, I should have reworded my post to indicate that some of her "accomplishments" were attempts that were not as successful as others.
there isnt anything or anyone that needs defending on this message board. but we come here and shoot the **** all the same, eh? I don't care if you like madonna or not.
people who can sing and dance well are a dime a dozen. people who have something to say are what's rare and special. madonna has something to say. and she knows how to say it: great pop music, performance art (live and video), image and controversy.
I'll defend her if I wish.
You already have. Who said you couldn't/shouldn't defend her? I said she doesn't need to be defended. Defend her all you wish. She still doesn't need it.

Did I lose time, or are you hags still bitching over Madonna? That is so Spring of '06.
It's a slow night.
Not if you're beating up on Dakin!
"Defend her all you wish."
OK I will. I can't watch the Mets lose anyway.
I'll just say my remarks are a little biased and tempered by the experiences I've shared with this woman. I saw her from a different point of view than most, and in my mind, she deserves to be admired.
Carry on!
madonna has something to say.
So did The Monkees. They even said so in their theme song.

Ten that I've seen this year who can sing rings around Madonna:
Andy Bell, Erasure; Amanda Palmer, Dresden Dolls; Jon Pierce, Elkland; Tanya Donnely; Holly Brewer, Humanwine; Ana Matronic, Scissor Sisters; Sarah Neufeld, Arcade Fire; Brendan Urie, Panic! At the Disco; and all four members of The Futureheads. That's 12.
Now I am only judging their voices based on what I heard live, and comparing that to what I heard Madonna sing live, at concerts this past year.
Erasure? They have been around for decades, and are not young wannabe chicks. John Pierce is a wannabe chick? Brendan Urie?
Anyone can dig up tens of thousands of names of talented singers in the world who are more talented vocally than Madonna. What I meant, and I suspect you know darn well, were those young hot chick wannabes who are popular today.

Well, my feminist sister, you didn't specify "chicks" and you didn't specify what made a "wannabe."
I named 11 (take away Andy Bell for being old, which has to be sort of a double edged sword for you, no?) and there's still 11 people I heard with my own ears sing better than what I heard coming out of Madonna's mouth this past year.
But, hey, that's only one of the very important criteria you listed to explain what makes Madonna so great, somewhere down the list from having a great body.
