I agree with SonofRobbieJ - I don't think Joannie's bronze was a sympathy vote! I think she skated two beautiful programs.
That was the cleanest ladies final I have seen in many years. They should all be proud, but that still doesn't discount that fact that I wanted Miki Ando to fall because I thought she was being scored too high.

If the IOC is going to 'investigate' the womens hockey team for celebrating by having a beer and smoking a cigar after everyone had left the arena, then they should also 'investigate' the poor sportsmanship shown by several of the Finland bronze medal winners who hurled their Olympic bouquets indiscriminately into the stands after receiving them.
Oh, no! An 18 year old was able to take a sip of beer or champagne! The world must be ending. How dare they get caught up in the moment of a gold medal win and celebrate.
What is the drinking age in Canada? 19?
But yeah, I agree. Give me a break.
I don't have any problem with them celebrating - but to stay on the ice - where additional hockey matches still have to be skated - to drink and smoke cigars isn't a wise choice. I think it was wrong.
(By the way, I don't care AT ALL that an 18 year old had a drink, even though technically it is 19 in British Columbia. But, the authorities do.)
Regarding the situation with the bouquets - I had thought they were being thrown into the crowd as a way to share them - much the same way tennis balls are hit into the crowd at the end of a match at the US Open, or athletes 'share' valuable souvenirs with the crowd. I didn't realize anyone considered that disrespectful.
Addy, I didn't realize they were doing it on the ice....
Agreed, Addy. It's disrespectful. And even if the 18 year-old drinking isn't a big deal, the IOC is obligated to do something about it, whether they care or not (they're kind of killjoys, so I'm sure they do, but that's beside the point).
I just hope the Olympic organizers don't go overboard and ban them from the Closing ceremonies, or anything. That would NOT be warranted. At all.
I agree, that would be going overboard!
They were behaving like a bunch of truckdrivers which was truly an embarassment for the host country. I'm all for celebrating your victory, but that manner in which you choose to celebrate deserves scrutiny if you're doing it in full view. They were old enough to know better. I say ban them from the closing ceremonies.

Like truckdrivers? Seriously? Is that supposed to be some kind of insult? They were having a beer in celebration of a wonderful accomplishment. It was a private celebration in the arena after the public had left. Most of the press had also left but, yes, of course there had to be one U.S. photographer who was looking for some way to rain on their parade. Congratulations on that. As for them being an embarrassment to their country, you are dead wrong. We are very proud of them and have absolutely no reason to be embarrassed. As someone who has dual citizenship and divided loyalties because I know two of the U.S. players, I was more embarrassed by the rudeness exhibited by several of the Finland players as I mentioned before but also by the way that some of the U.S. players acted during the medal ceremony than I was by the Canadians' private celebration. I understand the disappointment at winning a silver but there's no excuse for so many of them refusing to even smile at the woman who was awarding their medals. She clearly was speaking to each one individually and some of them didn't respond at all. Banning any of them from the closing ceremonies would be ridiculous.
I was not really appalled, apart of me kind of dug it. They are hockey players for goodness sakes. That being said it was a weird juxtaposition when you had some players gurgling beer, champagne, and puffing cigars while some players had their little kids on the ice. IOC's job is not policing drinking, leave that to the local authorities.
Rumors are that because Canada 'dominates' so much in women's hockey that they may drop it, reminiscent of when the Summer Olympics drop softball b/c of US domination. Do not even get me started on the double-standards (the Soviet domination of the men's hockey tournament did not deter officials from keeping it going) but maybe there is an even bigger meaning for these ladies, on top of the fact they won the GOLD MEDAL in front of a home crowd. They were going to party regardless of locale.
EDIT: Men's hockey US-Finland on now!

OK, change of subject. Can someone fill me in on when the next hockey games are and who is playing who? And when is the final?
Slovakia plays Canada at 9:30 tonight.
US is up(!) on Finland right now.
Bronze Medal game of losers in the match-ups above tomorrow at 10 pm.
Gold Medal on Sunday at 3:15 pm.
...of course there had to be one U.S. photographer who was looking for some way to rain on their parade.
Who said the photographer was LOOKING for a way to rain on their parade? And, from all reports I've read, there were a couple of photographers still there.
I agree Addy. I thought that comment was a bit out of line.
Thanks, strummer.....I just saw that US is up 6-0? WOO HOO!
People have their opinions...
I think I'm done on that topic. My opinion is clear.
There is a Hockey game on now. The US men are playing I think. NBC is broadcasting it.
Yep, the US is winning! By a lot!
Our hockey team jumped out to a 6-0 lead after less than 13 minutes. The score is the same now, about halfway through the game.
I'm VERY happy with the Results last night! Sport's Illustrated predicted the Pairs and Ladies Medals correctly.
To say that the fact that the U.S. didn't medal is a failure is wrong...they did EVERYTHING they could...there just weren't enough spots on the podium.
This was actually the best final flight of a Ladies Singles at the Olympics! The only real visable mistakes were from Mao Asada...but they really didn't define her program.
However, Mao would do much better if Tatiana didn't get her the same type of program that she gave to all of her stoic Russians.
In 2006 Sasha, Irina and Elena G-something from Georgia fell.
2002- Sasha and Michelle fell, Maria Brutraskaya and Julia Sebestian had messy programs.
1998- Surya Bonley performed bad.
1994- Surya Bonley fell
1992- EVERYONE fell
1988- Debi Thomas had mistakes, Kira Ivonova performed awful...

I am so happy Brian Orser finally gets his gold.
LOL MSNBC is apologizing/backtracking/red-faced about a phone interview with Ryan Miller that turned out to be a prank caller. I heard the prank call live and Fake Ryan was saying he was looking forward to facing Canada again and guaranteed a gold medal. Poor Ryan is on now basically saying that is not him. Stupid, MSNBC.
Living in Buffalo, we see a lot of Ryan Miller on TV and he would not say that. Poor thing.
