The photos look amazing. (I couldn't help seeing them, NYT tweeted them!)
I smirked when I saw the fifth Olympic snowflake didn't open.

Haha, something went wrong already I guess. I sure hope the ceremony is better than the accommodations!
Jay, did you watch the figure skating last night?

Um, I peeked. I figured they can't be that important if they're on before the official opening, anyway.
What happened to the other thread? If something defamatory was said, why can't the mods just delete that one post instead of the entire thread?

The figure skating was pretty important in that Plushenko skated. He was way ahead until one of the young Japanese skaters pushed him into second place. It was pretty exciting. Next figure skating is tomorrow.
i asked the thread be deleted Jay.

Friends who were there today reported that the ceremony is wonderful.
The Russian culture is rich in history and beauty - folklore, dance, music - I love being able to celebrate that.
(I shall simply turn my back on the TV when Putin enters).
I love the Opening Ceremony. Emotional, and gets me so excited for the athletes!

Posted: 2/7/14 at 7:48pm^Yeah, I'll turn my back too. Good idea. Barack Obama, as my head of state, has already represented me by his own boycott, so I think I'll just press ahead with viewing, even if I do feel guilty. Is that bad?

I always love the olympics and even this year-as long as our athletes are already in Russia and living their dreams, I want to support them.
BOO PEE-U-TIN!

Posted: 2/7/14 at 7:55pmI'm watching to support all the athletes who are living their dream! And to celebrate the Russian culture that stands apart from this hideous regime... The ballet, the music, the art. So much to love about the country and the people. NOT the government.

Posted: 2/7/14 at 8:33pmLoving it too! I love Russian arts and history. Their National Anthem is one of my favorites- so passionate and powerful. Such a rich history indeed and I love the traditional costumes.

Posted: 2/7/14 at 9:17pmI want to know why the USA always has to put some embarrassing ensembles together for the opening. Who approves of those? They should be fired.

yay USA! they look so happy!
The interior of the arena looks so futuristic-like the inside of the ship in ALIENS. Love it!

...actually, I came here to post that, as an entire group, I like the look.
I didn't think i liked the sweater when I saw it shown on it's own. But, as an entire team of over 200 athletes walked in together, wearing them, I actually liked the look...
(Agree Jane - the projections during the parade of athletes are beautiful. Beautiful visuals for this Ceremony!)

I'm loving all the Olympic-themed ads, also!
Seeing the athletes arrive - with their cameras and their smiles - all hugging eachother and waving their flags - makes me so happy.

I like the outfits too.
I wish some of the athletes would stop filming with their phones and iPads - experience it through your eyes, people!
Yay Jamaica.

Posted: 2/7/14 at 10:05pmI love how they've used the whole space of the arena and not just the floor. Makes for some great TV.
