Posted: 2/10/14 at 8:49amI can't help but notice all the empty seats at so many events. Even the figure skating arena wasn't full, though it was almost full when the Russians were skating. And the fans of Netherlands speed skating pack almost any arena, but the small speed skating arena had plenty of empty seats.

Posted: 2/10/14 at 9:58amI notice that at almost every skating event I watch on tv. Why???

From the ballet section of the opening ceremonies, this is a gif of the always astonishing Ivan Vasiliev doing his little bit:

"I can't help but notice all the empty seats at so many events."
Official admission numbers have not yet been released, but all firsthand reports indicate that attendance to this year's Winter Olympics are dramatically lower than previous years. Security and safety being the primary cause.

I wasn't that thrilled by the opening ceremonies, save for the ballet section, which was stunning. It paled when compared to Nagano, Barcelona, Beijing, imo.
Yulia is the most exciting skater to come along in a long while. I adore that Jason Brown, and thought he did great considering the whirlwind he's in. I wish Abbott could've skated to his potential, and hope he does well in the men's final. We'd have had a chance at the team silver.
I still loathe Plushenko, but he did his job for the team, even if I still think he's always been overrated in his artistic marks. His post interview showed what an arrogant ass he is.
Davis and White were stupendous in both of their skates. I hate the program for the Canadians...they are so much better than the material, imo.

Posted: 2/10/14 at 2:45pmI have never liked Plushenko.

Posted: 2/10/14 at 11:49pmI am just as much in awe of Yulia as everyone else. She is truly spectacular, however, we have our own 15-year-old phenom and I cannot wait for her to have her first skate. Why isn't anyone talking about Polina??

I'm here! Beautiful!
Am going to the Men's Halfpipe Snowboard tonight.
Tomorrow during the day will be Women's Alpine Skiing and tomorrow night is Pairs Figure Skating.
No spoilers from me!

Addy, have a blast! Keep us posted!
Popular, as good as Polina was at nationals, she is just not at the level of Yulia...yet. I do wish she'd get some more mention in our own coverage here in the US, though. She's our silver medalist, but I imagine the bigger story is Ashley's participation and Gracie's win.
It'll be interesting to see who handles the pressure best, which is often what the Olympics skating comes down to. Yulia has alot of weight on her tiny shoulders...Polina does not. Yu Na Kim hasnt been seen in a long time, is she at par with her amazing win at the last olympics, and what of the Japanese ladies? (I'm not going to mention Carolina Kostner, as I think she is WAY overrated.)
One last point about Yulia is that she could still have a growth spurt and we all know what that can do to these young phenoms...so this could be her only shot.

Oh, Plushenko.
Sorry, Jane! Still, I think pulling out is better than skating and finishing in one of the lower placings and not getting a medal. That would be a bigger indignity for him, I think.
Oof, Jeremy Abbot.

Posted: 2/13/14 at 1:51pmI must admit I'm very pleasantly surprised at how good Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski are doing. They're frank and critical without being negative, and theie technical comments far exceed the usual drivel we hear from skating announcers. Weird that they're calling live during the day, then NBC uses other commentary for prime time.

Posted: 2/13/14 at 3:11pmI must admit that I was never a fan of Tara Lipinski, but she is excellent at giving commentary. NBC, get rid of Sandra Bezic.

Posted: 2/13/14 at 6:03pmI was out all day, what happened? Why did Plushennko pull out? (no comments out of some of you guys, lol)

Posted: 2/13/14 at 6:13pmHe pulled out right before he was supposed to skate. I think he had been dealing with an injury this season, and then he re-injured himself during warm ups. A shame. At least he got to compete for his team at these games.

Plushenko has struggled with knee and back injuries in recent years and has competed infrequently. He said that screws remain in his back from an operation.
In Thursday’s warm-ups, he tried two triple axels and said he felt a sharp pain “like a knife” in his back. He stumbled out of the jumps and appeared pained. A look of resignation crossed his face. (New York Times)
A shame, but at least he has his team gold. He wouldn't have beaten Hanyu anyhow.

What did we see the other night, when he skated so well, but then was pushed into second?
Anyway, if there's a short program to be seen, I'll try and watch it if it doesn't conflict with Project Runway, lol.
BTW, Dottie, feel free to say all the negative things you want. I'm not affected by other peoples' opinions. We're all entitled. So fire away!

The other night was the team competition. Tonight is the men's short program.
The commentary during the live portion of the event is far superior than the drivel Sandra and Scott are contributing. When Plushenko withdrew during the telecast earlier today, Terry Gannon kept going on and on about the speculation of others as to whether or not he was truly injured. That drove me up a wall. I hope none of these people speculating ever has an issue with their back.
Not a fan of Plushenko's, but I felt bad that he had to withdraw. He wouldn't be the first to withdraw prior to competition. I'm reminded of Tai Babalonia and Randy Gardner during 1980 Olympics and Michele Kwan in 2006.
