So I'm curious as to the consensus here: do you think it's more important to waste the time of someone who doesn't interest you out of concern for his feelings? Or is it better to be upfront about one's sexual preferences (which tend to be innate)?

Isn't the latter the supposed advantage of on-line dating?

(I write this as someone who hasn't been single since the 1970s. So I have no problem admitting my ignorance on the subject.)

I for one am turned off by people who can know that not a single person of an entire race will ever be appealing to them.

My friend has a rule that white men and civilians need not apply. She is the whitest, strawberry blond chick I have ever met. Black soldiers are just her thing.

I don't really get it.

I did, however, have my own rule when it came to men. Must be this tall to ride. I am 5'10" and he had to be taller. I didn't always stick with it, but it was my aim.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

I think its fine to have "preferences" that you keep in your head. When did blatant racism and rudeness become an acceptable norm?

I am blessed to have never been anchored to a "type" and have experienced all kinds of men.

Part of the downside of our "online profile" culture is that people put distance between themselves and the other person. They somehow believe they can "order" the perfect mate and if the person has a flaw, they can just go back online and "order" another.

Relationships start with a friendship. If you dont have the ability to be anyone's friend because of what they look like, their race, weight, body then you have a really scary personality concern. You will most likely be alone forever.

No one is perfect regardless of what they think. Anyone who starts a sentence with, "Im not conceited but..." is nothing but trouble. Also anyone who refers to overweight men as "fat cows" is a terrifying human being.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

Sometimes I think you get out what you put out. I've had relationships with two different guys I met on Grindr.

What about age? Is it considered socially acceptable to say "no one over 25", for example? And what is the difference between this and races?

I personally don't put either because it does come across as douchebaggery to me, but I can understand that people have their preferences.
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

isQolbinau I think alot of it delivery. Listing preferences in a respectful way like "I'm seeking a Caucasian male partner between the ages of 25-35 who likes to stay active and enjoys athletics" reads a lot different than NO ASIANS! NO FAT PIGS! If you're fat, you'll be blocked." Even saying you want a VGL guy is offensive because VGL is subjective. All you have to do is decline a date with someone you are not attracted to.

People are looking for shortcuts to actual communication.

Did you see the guy on Craig Kilborn last night who, when asked where he was from, answered, "SF".

Craig asked what that means and the guy said "San Fransisco, but that's too long to say"

Or the inspirational quote someone posted on Facebook that was two paragraphs long and most of the comments were, "I'm not reading that, it's too long"

Thank you all for the very thoughtful replies. Back in the Middle Ages when I was single, I dated men of all races, ages, straight-acting or not.

But I ended up falling in love and spending my life with a Swedish-American guy who quite literally grew up on a dairy farm in the Midwest. In retrospect, I don't think that was an accident, but reflected tastes I formed unconsciously around the time I hit puberty. (He's also a great guy; our relationship isn't all about "type".)

I can't really imagine being single again, but if I were and looking for more than a one-night stand, I'd be faced with the decision to acknowledge that I do have a "type", or perhaps risk wasting other men's time.

Alright, kids. I can't resist chiming in on this one.

As far as race / type go, I look at it this way. We ALL have types or things that attract us and things that do not. Some people are attracted to blondes and not brunettes. It really is no different than being attracted to one race but another, it is probably our country's delicate history of race relations that makes us take such a reaction to someone not having a sexual attraction to a particular race. I have also talked to a fair number of men in this city who only date men of a different race than they are and when you speak to them about the topic, the response can be - more times than I care to recall - that they think it is trendy. I think that is revolting and I often question if it is a real attraction to the person or to them as a fashion accessory.

Now, to the original topic of this thread.

I have actually had chats with management of one particular gay establishment in Manhattan that I frequent about this very topic and I found the position incredibly valid and honest.

This establishment has refused to reserve / book bridal showers for several years but, for better or worse, if a bridal shower simply shows up, they will not refuse them entry. they do not advertise the policy, but freely let women know if they DO call to inquire. The reasons are pretty simple.

1. Yes, it is a public establishment, but they are there for and to cater to the gay clientele. A mixed crowd is appreciated, but the gay clientele should never be made to take the back seat to satisfy someone else.

2. Booking bridal showers is flat out bad for business. When bridal showers have been there (and I have seen this several times at this place), the place clears out RAPIDLY even on a busy night.

Let's be frank. Three drunk girls in a gay bar somehow always manage to 'fill' the volume of a gay bar. They get loud, they get high pitched and squeal CONSTANTLY - especially if you reference the party. because they know they won't get hit on, they feel more free to get absolutely drunk and act absolutely crazy. They also constantly try to convey how much they love the gays, how much they love gay bars and want to show how much effort they put in getting dolled up and ultimately get mad when the focus of the room is not on them. bridal showers aside, I think we all have either done it or seen it where a group of gay men walk into a gay bar, see LARGE swaths of straight girls running amuk and then turn around and walk right back out the door, especially in NYC where we have 5 other options within a 2 block radius.

before marriage was legal here in NY, I know management of this establishment also did feel that it was a bit of a slap to the face and salt in the wound of clientele to have girls in their celebrating their legal marriage when the very people the place is meant to cater to were denied the right. Why have a loud, drunken. shrill reminder when they want to be out enjoying a night? Never mind one instant where a drunk bride to be dropped her ring and demanded the dj cut the music and tell people to help look for it...

"I for one am turned off by people who can know that not a single person of an entire race will ever be appealing to them. "

Well said, and that's what bugs me about it. I get Gaveston's question--but I think there's a difference in not finding someone attractive after messaging them, and just blanketly stating a list of things, including race, you absolutely don't want to here from anyone who fits them. I guess if you're on a site merely to have a random hook up, there's no real reason to worry about politeness, but it makes the person seem like someone I'd never want to meet. Of course you have other standard bizarre usuals on those sites, like people who post pictures of themselves nakes (usually with no head shot) but then say in their description they're just looking for friends, etc. Who knows.

Anyway I think Betty said pretty much what I feel.

In re: your post, TD, the other night I was telling (admitting?) to my best friend that when driving by myself, I've begun to use acronyms, whether it's talking back to the radio, getting angry at other drivers, or just talking to myself, et cetera. I don't consider myself lazy -- at least not liguistically. I'm using new signifiers. When texting became normal practice about 10 years ago, I wondered how long it would take before it started to transform the way people speak. And at 30 years old, I'm just barely a Millennial. Imagine what effect it's having on the iGen.

I guess part of the turn off of "No Blacks, no Asians, No one over 25, 5'9" to 6'2", work out daily (32" waist or smaller), must be in school or college graduate, no smokers (420 OK), must be within 5 miles to message me- I WILL BLOCK YOU!" is the idea that that person is so besieged by offers that he feels it necessary to discourage 95% of all members from contacting him.

I mean, whenever I log on I get several hundred messages, most of which are propositions and still, I manage to be polite- why can't you?

Right Joe, it is as if the person is so valuable that god forbid they have to respond to al those pesky replies.

They are trying to order a pizza with a penis-thats what feels offensive. Everyone has criteria, but we are dealing with people and not kitchen interiors. Some tact and humanity would be nice.

I also like men with a pic of them spreading their cheeks with the heading "No hookups!"

I always like the fellows who are looking for "FRIENDS ONLY!" who specify "NO UNCUT" because really, circumcision status is the most important thing in a friend.

I actually like the idea of I Am Curious (Growl).

Maybe that could be a thread where people give out their A4A, Grindr or Manhunt user names.

Bingo, Phyllis. I've gotten into many arguments with friends about this, but saying "no blacks" indicates more than a preference to what turns you on. It's just another way of saying "all black people look alike."

What does "no blacks" mean anyway? What about someone who's half-black? Or a quarter? And does "no Asians" include guys from the Middle East and eastern Russia? Or what about Polynesian guys? (Oceania isn't Asia)

Go ahead and start it!

I've had people Grindr recognize me from BWW. More than once. More than twice. That's so weird.

That reminds me -- I wanted to start a thread about usernames on here.

I think I have had it happen twice- with BWW friends becoming "friends" on another site. I think only one "with benefits."
