"Bette Midler in "The Rose", Imelda Staunton in "Vera Drake", Annette Bening in "American Beauty" and "Being Julia"..."

All of those performances were nominated. In fact Staunton's and Bening's performances in Vera Drake and Being Julia were nominated for best actress in 2004, and lost to Hilary Swank's for Million Dollar Baby. I supposed they could have co-defeated Swank in a tie.... theoretically.

Maggie Smith should have won an Oscar for 1987's "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne". It is not even on DVD. PEOPLE Who DESERVE OSCAR NOMINATIONS THAT DON'T GET THEM Costars Bob Hoskins and Dame Wendy Hiller.

I am dead serious about this...TOY STORY should have been nominated for Best Picture. I remember there was buzz about it, too.

Sometimes, great actors, not necessarily the right roles. Mark Ruffalo, "You Can Count On Me." Stunning work. He later got one for a nice but not especially notable performance in "The Kids Are All Right," when the work wasn't nearly as powerful. In some way, it seemed compensatory. But then, Julianne Moore will win for "Still Alice," a fine movie, certainly, but as has been noted elsewhere, her taking the award will likely be for a general consensus that she's long overdue. (She earned Oscars for both "Far from Heaven" and "The Hours," easily.)
