Hey, congratulations on making all that possible JG! You ENABLED that co-worker to rip off the system, depriving someone in need from getting help. Way to go!

I think easy cut-and-dried solutions to problems like the one you just proposed Joe also don't take into account the messiness of the real world.
You hit the nail right on the head, PalJoey. I am not going to argue about some of this stuff, but sometimes how people get some of this stuff is not what you think. The animal shelter I work with does huge garage sales twice a year. We get donations from the community. You would not believe some of the clothing we get. I've seen brand new items with tags still on them, designer clothes, leather jackets, etc... We don't sell anything really expensive because we know nobody would buy it then. But yes, I got a new pair of Adidas sneakers for a quarter that way and a jacket that probably cost like $50 or more for $1.
Also, some agencies in my area collect used cell phones as well. They give them out to clients, if they need them. You also are getting like Tracfone and other companies that have pay as you go phones that are like smart phones.
So there you go. Not everyone abuses the system. And there are many plausible ways of getting stuff without paying full retail price.

Marianne, complexities are where the "just..." solutions collapse. Didn't you know anybody on food stamps who has a cellphone was personally handed it to them by President Obama who also gave them 100 bucks and told them to get themselves something nice.
Life is no deeper than appearances. Duh.

Do I need to explain the "Obamaphone" myth? In 1984, congress created a program to provide phone service to people in need. As I said above, you need a phone to connect with benefits, to get called by prospective employers, heck, to get a call from school if your kid takes ill. Starting in 1996 this program was expanded to include cell phone providers.
In January of 2012 the program was overhauled; now, cell phone companies are assessed a "Universal Service Fee" that funds the program. Some companies chose to pass this on to their customers (Check your bill for USF charges) and some merely contribute from their general revenues. The USF covers all expenses and NO tax dollars are spent to provide phones with a goal of "Universal Access" to phone service.
The gas company in my area has a similar program- you can choose to add $1 a month to your bill to pay into a fund that provides service to people who otherwise could not afford it.

But,but, but they still buy junk food with those food stamps!
Are you trying to say poor people are entitled to heat Joe??
And then they use ALL the money they save to buy the nicest cars and iPhones and label clothing!
Abby seems to have fallen quiet? Ran away with her tail between her legs I presume?
Well, she does have grocery shoppers to spy on, food banks to volunteer at, franchise owners to interview (in between their two jobs), and a job to not go to.
Oh, and the fact that its usually the times High School is in session she doesn't post is irrelevant haha
I heard of a welfare queen once who was seen in the checkout line with a birthday sheet cake...a birthday sheet cake! Apparently she felt she could feed all the neighbors' kids with my money. Outrageous!

I was very surprised that once abortion came up, Abby didn't have stories of the "lots" of women she knows who have had multiple abortions and use abortions as birth control.
Yeah. No stories of her standing in abortion clinic waiting rooms, watching everyone?
"They drove to the abortion clinics in expensive cars, wearing name brand clothes, eating junk food while talking on their nice cell phones! The nerve!"
And don't forget the second they walked out of there they were looking to get knocked up again so they could come back.
Nothing to see here. Keep on moving. My brain fell out momentarily. Damn interwebs.
He was being ironic.
And don't forget the second they walked out of there they were looking to get knocked up again so they could come back.
Not to mention all the women getting abortions who aren't even pregnant!
Hmmmmmmm maybe a Privatized Abortion Clinic Franchise is a way to go!
Baby-Go-Bye-Bye
Maybe Abby's friends will want in.

I do have a life outside of this site unlike most of you. I'm sorry I don't spend 24/7 constantly checking to see what people who don't have much going on upstairs are saying about me.
I just don't know how you people don't see how obamacare is going to have a negative effect on almost everyone. My boyfriend's dad is a dentist in southern California and has 2 successful. practices, and now that obama has been elected he's going to have to fire some of his employees because his taxes are going to increase tremendously. He created his businesses from nothing, he didn't inherit it.
You will see the unemployment rate go up the next couple of years, and will you still be blaming it on bush? You can only do that for so long. At some point obama has to take responsibility.

I love when people in the helping professions don't think people should get insurance benefits.
