I'll agree Red- if you are in a big city. I live in a fairly rural area and there is NO place to get free contraception. I contacted the county health department and asked if they had condoms we could give out at a college World Aids Day event and the nurse there told me it was illegal to give away condoms. Now I went to her boss and got that straightened out, but needless to say they were not eager to put condoms into the hands of college students even if it wasn't a felony.

If you pop into any Planned Parenthood, you can get free condoms. I believe the same is true at hospitals and a lot of school clinics (probably not in too many red states, though). But free condoms ARE out there and people need to not only be responsible sexually but also responsible in finding out where they can get the condoms if they don't want to pay for them.

Or else the old Ziploc & twist tie always works.

I was going to post that, Joe. Big cities? Easy. Small towns? Rural areas? Not as much. Places that are lucky to have a Planned Parenthood. Places where the clerk at a store may very well know your family and friends. Places where you can't be discrete easily about obtaining contraceptives.

I've said it before but I'm spoiled by living in a big city.

I also forgot about pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals, who put their religion over their practice by denying patients and clients Plan B and contraceptives all together. Especially young people have a right to at least learn what to do and what not to do, instead of being stuck with a kid they don't want.

But it's also 2012 and people know how to Google.

But that comes down to personal responsibility also, doesn't it? If you want to have sex and be a big boy or girl, you need to ask for the birth control or go somewhere "safe" to get it. "I don't want Billy Joe at the drug store to see me since he might tell my mom" is no excuse for not being safe.

And we've learned how people in places like Oregon watch your every move in the checkout line and then follow you to your car.

I imagine that makes taking care of your contraceptive needs a bit more problematic.

Well, the people in my high school who found themselves becoming parents were the religious ones. There are other factors at play in these things- I'm mostly thinking about teens here.

My little brother is 18. He's used a computer his entire life. I bet you he's looked up sex ed info at least once, if not to Google "green stuff coming from penis".

If it's a shared computer, they may not risk it, but he also has an iPhone and his own 4G service, if not free wifi somewhere.

This whole "Kids aren't being educated" strikes me as silly these days.

Yeah it's always the religious teens who get pregnant. They can thank their parents for that, by the way. When I was in school everyone I knew having sex bought condoms or was on the pill and never once did any of my "heathen" sex having friends ever even have a pregnancy scare.

Let's look at some fun things. Mississippi, highest teen pregnancy rate in the country has ONE Planned Parenthood. Shocking isn't it?

And this little gem!

So, they only teach abstinence only sex ed but they have the highest teen pregnancy rate and only one Planned Parenthood. There's something wrong with that.

It may strike you as being silly, but it is a proven thing that how kids are taught sex ed affects pregnancy and STD rates.

Just because I find it silly doesn't mean I don't agree with the facts.

Kids should be taught about their bodies. My dad tried to teach me but it was too late. But at what age is appropriate? Is it really true that sex is happening earlier now than it did ten years ago?

Abby--you and your "father" are ignorant tools.

When will you grow up and realize that the only the only people who want FREE STUFF stuff are the PARASITES OF PRIVILEGE.

The parasites of privilege who take as much they can grab from America and Americans, and pay as little as possible in taxes thanks to "legal" tax deductions they squeeze out of well-meaning members of all Congress. They leave the country broken, denuded and demoralized.

THOSE are the real PARASITES: the WEALTHY

Then they put those profits into offshore accounts and multinational corporations.

And then they argue that no money should go to services that help people and you present them with real life scenarios of people who desperately need help, their answers always begin with "just." Can't afford children? Just get free contraception, it's falling out of trees everywhere you go in ever single corner of this great land. You're sick and can't afford to pay a doctor? Just go to the emergency room!

Yeah, that's the other thing. These hypotheticals are all so clean and neat and orderly, resembling nothing as messy and uncontrollable as real life. Can't afford children? Just make a decision to use contraception and that's it. It does not take into account the complications of the human psyche, or biology of the human sex drive. It's all just easy. "Just" always do the smart thing, like we all always do in the rest of our lives!

I am, by no means, agreeing with Abby, but there will always be people working the system. Are they a problem? Yes. Are they the average recipient? No.

I had a coworker back in Tennessee (I'll call her K) who had the same job I did. I lived in an apartment with a roommate and some months were tough, but we got by. K, however, lived in an apartment with her boyfriend, the father of her two kids. On paper, he didn't live there. She collected so much in food stamps that she was able to buy all of her groceries for the month and then have enough left over to let her mom shop, too. One Thanksgiving, we had another coworker who lost her home in a fire. We decided to take up money to buy them all the fixing for a big dinner. We took up the money and K said that she would be happy to do the shopping. Well, yeah. She took the cash and bought the food with her food stamp card. She took advantage of a program for tuition for single moms. She called it "free mommy money". Finally, one day, after talking about going to school to spend that "free mommy money," we all snapped on her. She honestly had NO idea how offensive her behavior was. She wouldn't have gotten those benefits if they knew her boyfriend was living with her and supporting their kids and paying half the rent. They didn't marry for that very reason. It was sickening. Meanwhile, there are people who actually NEED it, who can't get approved.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!
