He said Roman Catholic officials should be prepared to lose their jobs rather than co-operate with the law.
hmmm, apparently he doesn't care about his own flock either......if he's telling them to quit over this

Well, a world with less Catholic officials can't be a bad place.
Maybe he's secretly trying to help the rest of the world.
Or maybe not.

"He said Roman Catholic officials should be prepared to lose their jobs rather than co-operate with the law."
This, coming from a man who lives in riches and sits on a throne. I would like to find out that he molested some young child, so he can be put to death - I mean, according to the Bible, that is what should be done to homosexuals, and if Catholics believe so much in the Bible, why haven't those molesting priests been lynched by the Catholic church?????

And, we're off with a bang!
What is ridiculous is that gay marriage rights doesn't mean that any church or synagogue is required to perform a gay wedding.

Well, JRB, that's the big problem here. See, marriage was originally always a personal business and religious institution. Families negotiated money and belongings to set up their sons/daughters with one another and it was a religious ceremony (for the most part).
Then the government got in on it and made it a political institution as well...now, what has happened is that some churches recognize and perform the religious aspects of marriage for same-sex partners but, incredible, the political side continues to be influenced by that part of the religious movement that wants it to remain as it was those thousands of years ago.
To which I say, fine. don't let me marry and let your parents negotiate your sale to a husband/wife of their choosing. That's the way it was done. If you're really "lucky," you might not even get to meet your spouse before the wedding ceremony!
See, some things change because they're outdated...just a shame they seem to find certain particulars to hold onto as hard and fast doctrine while others are "clearly" archaic.

I honestly believe that the main reason he was selected was that he IS SO OLD and conservative. The Vatican is buying time, treading water with someone similar to John Paul....but probably knowing that change is eventual...they just don't want to address any change in policy at the moment.
Maybe in a few years when they have to elect another Pope...

Posted: 4/22/05 at 2:01pmThe last Pope condemned the bill as well to no effect. The Catholic church does not need to perform or recognize a gay marriage for it to be legal.

Posted: 4/22/05 at 3:17pmI agree with Windy City actor. I doubt that he will be Pope for more than a few years. He was JPII's right hand man.

Posted: 4/22/05 at 4:06pmI suspect that the Vatican, rather than addressing some crucial issues, is gonna keep the revolving door moving to deflect attention.

the pope came out against a gay bill? (bask in the delicious irony of that sentence for a sec with me)
i'm shocked! and scandalized. (disengage sarcasm filter)
what did ya'll think he was gonna do? grab the nearest cardinal, plant a shaiman-esque kiss on his lips and scream hurrah?
wca's right, benedict's a placekeeper while they fight out battles in the backrooms over the direction of the church. however, bear in mind that jp2 appointed almost all off the cardinals in power now so expecting any significant changes in church doctrine anytime soon might be an exercise in wishful thinking.
