Re: Grey's Anatomy - I'm actually kind of surprised at how annoying they make Meredith. Clearly, I'm no prude, but I hate the way they try to make her go out/get drunk/screw random guys thing endearing.. How many times did she do that this season? Three? And the blonde nurse with her shrieking neediness made me want to stick my tongue in a fan.

Thrilled that all of the Housewives were overlooked. The day Terri Hatcher wins and Emmy i'm throwing my tv out the window. That was another show that was so full of itself and never delivered. Eva Longoria makes me gag with the way she paws that basketball player boyfriend and brags about their sex life. Seriously, is she 16? No need to pepper every conversation with your "naughty" innuendo. We get it. You've seen him naked.

Glad for Jaimie Pressly. She's been around for so long and I actually kind of like her. Loved her with Justin Kirk in Jack & Jill (hated that show, mainly because Amanda Peet is talentless.) Tried to watch "My Name Is Earl" three times and could never sit through it. I don't get the fascination around that show.

My Name Is Earl is very hit or miss - but I don't think we're the main targetted audience. I do have to say, though, the episode where Earl tried to pay back his taxes and ended up in the water tower was BRILLIANTLY written.

Someone explain to me what is meant by "Lost is everywhere" and saying it's not "everywhere" in NY? All I meant by that is that I've seen articles about it in several magazines and the ads run for it on ABC constantly.

What else WOULD it mean? It's not like you expect to be walking down the street and Lost slaps you in the face.

By saying "Lost is everywhere" I knew what you meant. You meant it's on the cover of all the pop culture magazines that are sold throughout the U.S. so people can, instead of focusing on their real lives or the lives of other real people, they can read and gossip about lies and contrivances related to pretty white people they've never even met. You also meant it's advertised "everywhere". "Everywhere" being all of the pop culture places where the main demographic of people they're trying to get to watch the show commence. I don't subscribe to popular culture, neither does mainstream NYC (does the word mainstream even apply to NYC?). So from my sightlines, Lost is nowhere.

WannabeaFoster -- would you only be happy if every show had a gay character? Not every race, creed, or sexual orientation is going to be present on every show.

Every show? Try zero shows. And I'm not counting the asexual laugh-at-the-funny-fem-stylish-homos on Will & Grace or Queer Eye. Neither am I talking about representations you'll find on pay cable channels like HBO or Showtime, because not everyone can afford to pay extra money to learn something about the human condition that they otherwise would think did not apply to their lives.

I'm talking about full real life representations of gay human beings like the ones you'll find in the world we live in. For the people who don't have or *think* they don't have gay people in their lives, the only version of a gay person they know is what they see on television and in mainstream cinema and popular media. And that's not only an inaccurate representation of who gay people are, but, for when these people do discover that a person they love is gay (a son, daughter, friend, niece, nephew, aunt, uncle, grandchild), this is going to be the extent of their knowledge of what gay people are. And as that person in their life is struggling and looking for one of the people who has been there for them their whole life to console them and tell them that everything's going to be okay, they are going to have nothing meaningful to know or say. And while this might sound silly, none of us can deny that Americans are engulfed in popular media and entertainment, and that most of them take it all too seriously. So no, I don't want there to be "a" gay character on "every" TV show. All I want is for one of these shows that has millions upon millions of Americans glued to their TV sets every week to have an adjusted, real life gay person or persons living among the straight people. Because in the America they're telling people to relate to, gay people do indeed exist.

So what are everyone's predictions? I'm just crossing my fingers for Mariska, Chris, and Elizabeth Perkins.

I understand your point about television in general, but that's not a reason to condemn any given show for NOT having those characters on it. Condemn a show because it is poorly written, poorly acted, or poorly directed - not for what characters it DOESN'T have. I won't not watch a show because it doesn't have any characters who are Jewish. Granted, other than that I fit the target demographic of a white, straight male in his late twenties, so it's not quite the same, but it's the closest I can get for myself.

The problem I have with your argument is that today I think those people who you are talking about (who would need the role models on TV) would not watch the show anyway with a character such as the one you are describing. I think those who would be open to watching that would probably handle the situation fairly well anyway. It's a sad fact, but I think it's mostly true.

Well I know from personal experience and the experiences of many friends, that you're quite wrong.

Hey, how is it inside that bubble?

I would love for Curb Your Enthusiasm to win (my favorite comedy since Seinfeld), but i doubt that will happen. Ditto for West Wing.

I expect that Grey's Anatomy and Arrested Development will ultimately triumph.

Still shocked about Lost...

I know we've gotten off topic here. Are you telling me that those who would watch a character as your are suggesting (who you are also suggesting hasn't ever existed) would not be more likely to accept a gay relative than one who would refuse to watch such a show? And if such a character hasn't existed, as you say, how can I POSSIBLY be wrong in this hypothetical situation? Your logic is lacking here...

As for the noms - comedy is such a tough one this year - the one category I'm actually happy about. I love CYE, but I don't think this year was its best. W&G is WAY past its prime and was nominated because it was the last year to do so (Entourage should have had its spot). AD, while I think it's one of the best shows of all time, is done - it deserves the award, but it won't do it any good to get it. So, for me, it comes down to Scrubs v. The Office - and that couldn't be more of a toss up for me in terms of quality.

I so wanted Michael Imperioli to get a nomination for his Guest spot on L&O

"W&G is WAY past its prime and was nominated because it was the last year to do so (Entourage should have had its spot). "

Will and Grace didn't receive a nomination for Best Comedy Series. The spot you have Will and Grace in went to Two and a Half Men.

Oh, you're right. Sorry about that.

Two and a Half Men isn't bad though. Entourage is better.

I agree that Entourage should have been nominated, though I'd eliminate Scrubs (which I HATE) or Arrested Development (don't shoot me....I never got in to this show).

I think the weakest category of the year is Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Talk about a tough choice.

Both Scrubs and AD are brilliantly written and brilliantly acted. Neitehr are shows that encourage casual viewing though, which makes their nominations surprising.

The supporting actor category is a VERY strange one -- Hayes and Cryer should not have been nominated. Hayes because he's been doing the same schtick for what is it, eight years now? Cryer because that is not even close to a supporting role - it's CLEARLY lead. You want a supporting actor from that show, nominate the kid who gets all the funniest lines anyway. Those nominations should have gone to Harris (totally agree Zoneace) and John C. Mcginley from Scrubs. How he hasn't been nominated yet is beyond me. All that said, though, as I've been saying all along, this should be Piven's award, hands down.

Lead actress comedy is a ridiculous category - four of the five shows aren't even on any more. Stockard Channing? Seriously? I honestly don't even know who to root for in this category. I would have thought Marcia Cross or Felicity Huffman would've been locks - I mean, the show was not as good as last year, but both actresses turned in great performances.

Jasonf, we'll have to agree to disagree about Scrubs and AD, because I've given them both a chance and could never get in to either one.

I suspect Debra Messing may win Best Actress in a Comedy purely by default, not because the voters thought she was great this year. Plus, look at the competition.

However, I do find that Julia Louis Dreyfuss is VERY good on her show. So, I'll root for her to win.

I agree about the kid from Two and a Half Men. He should have been nominated. And Cryer, while deserving of a nomination for sure, belongs in the Lead Actor category.

All I'll say is this...thank christ Brad Garret wasn't nominated again for that role. If he can get nominate dyear after year and win for that, then Hayes totally deserves his nomination. Messing, however, doesn't. Not by a long shot. She mentally checked out of that show as soon as she got pregnant and it was never the same.

Adam, completely agree with you about Julia Louis-Dreyfus. I was never a big Seinfeld fan, but she’s completely won me over on Old Christine.

As far as the Desperate Housewives go, I think Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria were the only two cast members to rise above the sh*tty writing this season (and yeah, I’m including Felicity Huffman). Either one of them would have been a more deserving nominee than Messing.
