I tried to create a safe space for those personally affected by #theshroudofmurin including myself but that thread kept getting deleted. I guess jokes are not allowed even if they are not directly against the site guidelines. One of my posts was deleted and Rob sent me a message explaining why so that's fine and I'll accept that one. I do have qualms deleting anything that is found to be personally objectionable. I think it's silly to have that post locked but I stopped reading around 1:30am.

The only question that remains to be answered is: Did she sing the High C or not?

I actually care a lot, which is why I've made myself available both for those on the board, and off the board nearly 24/7 (as I think you can attest to Taz) whenever needed to keep all happy, safe, and chatting about our common interest in all things theatrical.

You're right, I know you care.

And I do appreciate all you do. I've said that dozens of times and will continue to do so.

But it is frustrating that no one seems to be willing to call this what it is: an upset actor blaming BWW members for something that they (we) didn't do.

The impression given is that only rainbows and sunshine will be allowed. And even though we all know that's not true, it does feel like we're being thrown under the bus.

I actually like this phrase more than the variations I've seen tossed around so much here in the past 24 hours, those along the lines of "we all love theater" with the implication that we just blindly love it so much that part of the privilege of discussing it means we have to shut off our critical faculties. I love GOOD theater. I worship GREAT theater. Theater that tries and fails is one thing. Theater that's a calculated grab designed to appeal to people because it's made up of stuff they've already seen before in dozens of other places begins to feel offensive to me. Theater that's crap ticks me off.

And I'm sorry. I know people put in a lot of work on things, but so do waiters whose restaurants close. So do construction workers who have no work when nobody's building. Most people think, "Good luck, hope you find work soon" but apparently people whose shows don't work out think the public must take into account ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE OUT OF WORK and, what exactly? They should have kept the show open for the wardrobe mistress?

I truly believe that the fact that commercial theater costs so much for audiences nowadays means that we need MORE places to say what our honest reactions are. Even if it's (gasp) deciding we don't want to see something without ever seeing it for any number of reasons.

I'd love a thread called "Why We Don't Want To See Your Show" in which we could share all the reasons, economic, rational, irrational, emotional, that go into deciding why a person would be looking forward to a "Shuffle Along" but not a, for example, "Nerds." And just lay it out there.

Right? I know. It just came to me when I was thinking about what ELSE is going on below the surface of these discussions and I realized one group of people is freaked out that they might be losing their income because their shows didn't work out (presented as "thwarted from doing the thing we love" while another group has to spend a good deal of the money they make doing the work they love (or not) and end up being chided for not spending their money they way the first group would prefer (presented as "not being supportive".

Audra hasn't actually commented (yet) - her reply to Jeanine Tesori didn't necessarily imply anything, at least that's what I'd like to believe.
