This is truly terrifying. It is nice to know that only one faith has the corner on the truth and that all other faiths do not deserve recognition.
This is unconstitutional and will not hold up to judicial review. Or at least should not . . .
"State bill proposes Christianity be Missouri’s official religion
Missouri legislators in Jefferson City considered a bill that would name Christianity the state's official "majority" religion.
. . .
The resolution would recognize "a Christian god," and it would not protect minority religions, but "protect the majority's right to express their religious beliefs.
The resolution also recognizes that, "a greater power exists," and only Christianity receives what the resolution calls, "justified recognition."
And what separates these people from the fanatics we are supposedly fighting in the War on Terror? Please, tell me. The only amusing thing is I can see all of the different branches of Christianity fighting over which one really is the right one, if a bill like this passed.
Christianity - The Only Religion That Counts

This is just as horrifying as the Day of Prayer I attended recently (not in my local parish, thank God!), where the priest announced that the only people getting into Heaven were the Catholics--other Christian denominations would have to endure Purgatory until "cleansed". He tried to hammer his point home by repeating several times that the Founding Fathers of our nation were all Christians--and don't you forget it!!!!
Later on he stated that Hollywood should be condemned for "glorifying homosexuality" (an obvious slam against BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN).
It was at that point that I stood up, announced that I was gay and stated "I don't want to be glorified; I just want to be accepted for the person I am." and walked out. I didn't wait for any reactions.
Dolly - props to you.
I wish I could have been there to see their faces when you stood up.
This really is horrifying. I am sure William Penn is turning in his grave.

What bothers me so much about that experience is that I was looking forward to it for several weeks. I'd re-arranged my schedule so I could attend this Day of Prayer. I was expecting a day of reflection and fraternity, not a day filled with bigotry and hate.
Um, what happened to the First Amendment?
Excuse me for a moment while I throw a complete tantrum
*screams, throws things*
Ok.
I can not believe this nonsense is actually happening. How do these people (in both examples) not know what absolute idiots they look like. Not to mention the simple bigoted ridiculousness of it all, these people don't even have ANY concept of Jesus' teachings either.
I can't imagine this bill will hold up, but the new Courts are certainly turning to where it won't be shot down as quickly as it should be.

Missouri. Hmmm.
They had the Extermination Order against Mormon settlers that the Governor signed into law in 1838. Kill them or drive them out was the plan. (Yes, a law right in the good ol' US of A).
It wasn't rescinded until 1975...

That is the closest I have ever gotten to a literal *head desk*.
It is beyond ridiculous that things have progressed to the level where people feel that they can put that bill forth. We all know that it's unconstitutional and they're most likely just grandstanding, but what really disturbs me is that they feel comfortable enough to propose it to begin with.
well yoda, it IS Missouri after all.......

Please don't close the borders until I get my ass out.
Wow. Just when you think you have heard it all.
...And on a similar note, Missouri is also proposing that "hate" be their official emotion.
I'm amazed at how hateful religion is becoming, and how hard they try to make us think what they are doing isn't hateful. I'd love to attend public worship, but as dollypop's experience shows, it is next to impossible. These people are the ones going to hell, in my opinion. Twisting the word of God for you own agenda is wrong. Much more wrong than anything I'd ever do in bed. Idiots. I hope they know how stupid they look.
Nope. They have no idea Bobby.
But, if there is an afterlife, I am sure they will realize when they are not given the "reward" they think they so richly deserve for perverting and distorting the teachings of JC.
As a Jew, I can respect and appreciate his teachings. And, to a great extent, I try to follow them. It is sad that in many ways I am a better Christians than many "Christians" I know.
How hateful religion is ... "becoming?" Looking at history in the most cursory way, I'd say a huge portion of warfare, violence, intolerant persecution of others in the world can be laid at the feet of religion. As for Christianity, my own, I must admit ... it's startling to me how one built on the man who taught us only to love one another, to practice forgiveness and nonjudgement, to be tolerant, and peaceful, is used to justify the opposite, consistently and aggressively.
Time to crack open Margaret Atwood's brilliant, harrowing "A Handmaid's Tale" and give it another, very careful, read. A cautionary tale, a prognostication of sorts.
Auggie, I love that book.
I love The Handmaid's Tale as well. The last time I read it the parallels terrified me.
Cassville, nestled in the heart of the Ozarks, population last census, 2,890. Where do you find this stuff? It's time to stop fixating on the growing Christian threat from the hinterlands and post a few good alien abductions.
The resolution also recognizes that, "a greater power exists," and only Christianity receives what the resolution calls, "justified recognition."
It sounds very familiar, except that in my part of the world it comes from a different religious majority.
How utterly disturbing.

Apparently this movement hasn't gone as well as planned, but they're still hoping to establish a Christian-based state government in South Carolina. If it picks up, do you think the two states will go to war over which one is 'more Christian'?
WELCOME TO THE CHRISTIAN EXODUS
it seems unconstitutional, but i don't know that it's declaring christianity to be the official religion of missouri. i might be reading it wrong.
missouri hcr13
I don't know if the resolution is declaring Christianity the official religion, but it does seem to say that the state will place it in higher regard than any other religion.

Please don't think that the experience I had at the Day of Prayer was characteristic of all organized religion. I was quick to point out that this experience did not take place in my home parish. Were it to happen there, the pastor would be the first to stop the priest who was preaching and ask him to leave.
No, there are plenty of Gospel Centered churches around that would never tolerate such bigotry. Want to find a good church? Check out their outreach programs for the hungry. If they have a food pantry or run a soup kitchen or sponsor a literacy program at the local jails, they are building the Kingdom of God as Christ preached it. They are probably very accepting of different lifetyles and a welcoming community.
smartpenguin -- these people don't know that they look like idiots because there are SO many of them who believe this. If it was just one person, or a handful of people, we would laugh this off as being ridiculous to start with. The problem is there are SO many people who are this fanatically religious that we DO have problems with bombings and terrorism...not to mention our current administration.
What always amazed me is that, from everything I've learned in my religious upbringing (reform Jewish) is that Christianity is all about tolerance and treating others as you want to be treated - the difference between the religions basically being the God that we worship. The absolute hypocricy from the zealots is astounding - and what's more is they don't see it as doing anything wrong.
