"Author Terry McMillan has filed divorce from the man who inspired her best-selling novel, "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," claiming her Jamaican-born husband -- who is 23 years her junior -- is gay.
In court papers filed in California's Contra Costa County Superior Court, McMillan, 53, said Jonathan Plummer married her for financial gain and a U.S. citizenship.
"It was devastating to discover that a relationship I had publicized to the world as life-affirming and built on mutual love was actually based on deceit," she wrote in her declaration. "I was humiliated."
McMillan added Plummer revealed his sexual orientation after she confronted him over several phone calls to a male friend living in Jamaica.
Plummer, 30, says when he discussed his orientation, "I was kicked out of the house in December right after I told her."
Both parties have filed restraining orders against each other. McMillan filed one to keep Plummer from their Danville house in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Plummer filed a restraining order against McMillan, claiming she walked into his dog-grooming business and tossed a ceramic object across the room. He claims McMillan left him a bottle of Jamaican hot pepper sauce with the writing, "Fag Juice Burn Baby Burn."
"She kept calling me, saying nasty things about me being gay, calling me a fag," Plummer said in an interview published by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Plummer filed a letter he claims McMillan wrote Jan. 14: "The reason you're going to make a great fag is that most of you guys are just like dogs anyway. … You do whatever with whomever pleases you and don't seem to care about the consequences."
McMillan has said, "Jonathan has manipulated me from the very beginning in his scheme to come to the United States, become a citizen and get rich through someone else's effort." McMillan added Plummer had embezzled at least $200,000 from her bank accounts.
Keith Boykin, a PlanetOut columnist and author of "Beyond the Down Low," a book about the phenomenon of black gay men living as heterosexuals, told the PlanetOut Network Plummer did not seem to fit the "stereotypical down-low profile."
"He claims he didn't know he was gay," Boykin said. "It sounds like he was confused."
Plummer insists he was too young to know better. When he met McMillan in 1995, he was 20 years old.
But Boykin said he would understand why a gay man would want to escape Jamaica. "Jamaica is a very homophobic place; I've been there before. So it's not at all surprising that someone would want to escape the culture there. (Homophobia) is accepted there in a way it would never be tolerated in our country. I mean you hear music about beating up gay men in department stores."
Boykin concluded, "Part of the reason there are so many people on the down low, we as a society, particularly in the black society -- we don't want to know the truth."

Wow, that reminded me of that Family Guy skletch: "Girl, it's time to get your groove back...AGAIN!" Really though, I do feel sorry for her....
"How Stella Lost Her Groove: The Terry McMillan Story" Starring Star Jones...coming this fall only on "Oh". Here is a sneek peek!
Serves her right. Wasn't there a derogatory comment in her book and the movie about Haitians with AIDS?
just the thread title made me laugh...
"The reason you're going to make a great fag is that most of you guys are just like dogs anyway. … You do whatever with whomever pleases you and don't seem to care about the consequences."
Yikes! Not a good sound-byte for McMillan.
Coming up...Ms. Grace Jones performing "My Jamaican Guy"...

Man you thought your divorce was ugly! I think Terry & Jon are going for a new world's record:
"Author Terry McMillan, whose latest salvo in an ongoing battle with her gay former husband Jonathan Plummer is a $40 million lawsuit which claims Plummer and his attorneys "conspired and formed a plan to threaten to humiliate and embarrass Terry McMillan, and violate her privacy and place her in harm's way, and threatened to damage her professional and personal standing in an attempt to extort monies from her," tells New York magazine's Intelligencer that folks should see where she's coming from, and know why she uses certain derogatory language. Plummer has claimed that McMillan referred to him as "little fag, common ****ing criminal, and a common extortionist." "
McMillan: "I'm really getting tired of the fact that people get upset that I use the F-word to refer to Jonathan. It was the only weapon that I have. It offends me that gay men think they are above criticism.
Above criticism? You check for yourself how NOT above Criticism her "fag" ex-husband is!

Bitch is bat-SH*T crazy. PM me for details.
I really do feel bad for her, but this gay bashing is making her loose my sympathy VERY quickly.
Would she have had her major, multi-million dollar success without him? Whose sympathy does she think she's garnering with all this hate?
"...the reason you're going to make a great fag is that most of you guys are just like dogs anyway...You do whatever with whomever pleases you and don't seem to care about the consequences..."
soapy, WHY would you feel bad for her?? She used their relationship to become a multi-millionaire, and now she does nothing but publically spew hate against him and EVERY GAY PERSON. She deserves NOTHING from you.
A lot of gay men--especially white gay men--immediately distrust men on the "down low," the same way they distrust bisexuals. They assume that all bisexuals are liars and users and manipulators.
Terry claims that Jonathan knew he was gay and deceived her. But he was a 20-year-old in Jamaica when they met, and Jamaican society is pretty homophobic. Not many teenagers in Jamaica are out and proud.
On the Oprah show Terry and Jonathan did together after the divorce--the biggest mistake of her career, even if she DID have a book to promote--she weirdly described what she did immediately after the divorce: She invited him BACK to the house she had kick him out of, got him into the Jacuzzi and tried to seduce him.
You can't make SH*T like that up.
Rath, as evil as she may be I believe she was used as well. Not only that, she was used by someone she loved.(I believe she had to have loved him or she wouldn't be this angry, and if she didn't love him his coming out would be a great opportunity for her to only make more money)
I can understand her being angry, I cannot understand he putting down a whole group of people because of it.
I'm curious. How do you think Jonathan "used" her?
soapy, I have not one whit of sympathy for her.
and if she didn't love him his coming out would be a great opportunity for her to only make more money
Don't worry Soapguy, that will be her next book. So she WILL make money off of this. Of course this all being done in public has NOTHING to do with that, does it?
PJ, I find it really hard to believe the Jonathan is 100% innocent here. It is very much believable that he used her for her money, and to get to America.
She has said that her next book will be called "HOW STELLA LOST HER GROOVE."
No one is ever 100% innocent, as you are destined to learn when you become soapguy18 or 19, but Jonathan had no idea who Terry was when she picked him up on a beach in Jamaica. Whether he was using her or she was using him for a "boytoy sex-slave" is something none of us will ever know.
As they sing in Evita:
There is no-one, no-one at all
Never has been and never will be a lover
Male or female
Who hasn't an eye on
In fact they rely on
Tricks they can try on
Their partner.
They're hoping their lover will help them or keep them
Support them, promote them
Don't blame them.
You're the same.
I feel bad that she was lied to and decieved just so he could get into this country and then live off her money. Nobody deserves to be used like that.
PJ, my point is that I have sympathy for her. It appears that you and Rath are unable to see past the hate shes spewing. No woman deserves for this to happen to her.
Deserves for WHAT exactly to happen to her?
How does ANYONE know that he lied to her and deceived her to get money?
And you know, don't you, that he got almost none of her money--compared to, say, a Catherine Zeta-Jones--because Terry's lawyers had him sign a prenuptial agreement?
I'm not talking about the money. I'm talking her spending years with the man only to find out he was gay. Because we're from different eras I'm sure you know the difficulties of coming out a lot better than I do. But, I really don't think it's right that for anyone gay or lesbian to marry the opposite sex only to end up hurting them down the line.
