I'm rooting for Spencer, the young gay dude.

Well, it's not actually live.
I'm rooting for Spencer, the young gay dude.
Why? Because he's gay?

And yes, I'm rooting for Spencer simply because he's gay. Just like I've done for every past season. My opinions change as the episodes unfold... But from the starting-gate? It's the gays for me.

Since I've not yet seen a second of this coming-season, I find it nicer to root for a stranger that has at least one awesome commonality with me. Birds of a feather... A little bit of self-projection, sure. But also comforting.
I'm always an advocate of gay representation on basic cable. Spencer, though I know little else about him, is someone I can put myself behind (so to speak). Someone to be passionate about if he does well; to be proud of if he serves as a positive image for my community; and to be angry if they are mistreated.
At any rate, back to the discussion at-hand: I am very excited for another season (duh!) but am already starting to feel sympathetic to whomever they send home immediately (Commercials are revealing that contestants are being voted-off as soon as they form tribes)

Strange that people choose early favorites based on things they may have in common with them. Like, me choosing to back the woman from my hometown, even though she'll probably end up being shallow and obnoxious. If you have a problem with that reasoning, by all means, just say so. Just don't passive aggressively pretend that you think it's somehow odd.
It's not that serious.

Chet changed that for me.

Chet was awful, but he wasn't the first contestant to make me rethink the gays on Survivor. That distinction belongs to the ridiculous eye-rolling self-deluded they-voted-me-off-because-I'm-a-threat bikini-wearing Coby from Palau.

That's not bizarre. That's alcohol poisoning.

Coby thought he was some kind of super power-player, but he was in fact, completely clueless. His delusions about being voted because he "was a threat" makes him the same as about 85% of the contestants on that show that get voted out.

Man
Woman
Gay
Straight
White
Black
...you get the idea
I like or dislike people based on their character.
And, I can't wait for the new season to begin! I'm hopelessly addicted to this show!

Well, obvs. But we're talking about pre-show analysis here, and shallow reasons are as good as any in deciding who you want to like. Of course, personality almost always changes that.
Oooh, ooh, I just remembered! Taj from SWV is going to be on this season! Am I allowed to root for her because SWV was my first cassette tape, or do I have to wait and see if she's crazy first? Woman once had 39047290 inch fingernails, likelihood of crazy is fairly certain.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Then again, I'm thinking of pre-surgery Ant.

While that is a fairly common reason among losing contestants, it's not what they say, but how they say it. Coby was so OTT about everything. Even when he was sitting on the jury, his silent gesticulations and facial reactions were borderline epileptic. God, I'll never forget the whining about how he wanted to go fishing, but the big boys just wouldn't let him. UGH! I only saw him for an hour once a week and even I wanted to kick him in the nuts.
