My going-out-on-a-limb predictions (hey, I know they won't all happen, but what's the fun in playing it safe?):
Letters from Iwo Jima makes it into Best Picture (instead of Babel)
Paul Greengrass makes it into Best Director
Toni Collette makes it in instead of Abigail Breslin (either Toni or Emily Blunt -- I can't see someone as young as Abigail Breslin getting a nom with so little precursor interest and without the famous name of a Tatum O'Neal)
Michael Sheen and Jackie Earle Haley both get in
I'm also predicting Ryan Gosling and "Love You I Do" and "Listen" both make it
BEST PICTURE
Dreamgirls
The Departed
Little Miss Sunshine
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Queen
BEST DIRECTOR
Martin Scorsese, The Departed
Paul Greengrass, United 93
Clint Eastwood, Letters from Iwo Jima
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Babel
Stephen Frears, The Queen
BEST ACTOR
Forrest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland
Peter O'Toole, Venus
Ryan Gosling, Half Nelson
Will Smith, The Pursuit of Happyness
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Departed
BEST ACTRESS
Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada
Helen Mirren, The Queen
Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal
Penelope Cruz, Volver
Kate Winslet, Little Children
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls
Rinko Kikuchi, Babel
Cate Blanchett, Notes on a Scandal
Adriana Barraza, Babel
Toni Collette, Little Miss Sunshine
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls
Jackie Earle Haley, Little Children
Jack Nicholson, The Departed
Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine
Michael Sheen, The Queen

Still hoping that Emily Blunt can sneak in that Best Supporting Actress category.
Likewise.

Well. I've been able to abstain to this point, and I can't any longer. I'll give my predictions of what will get nominated in the major categories. and mention one suprise thing i think (more accurately wish) could happen. (these aren't in any order)
BEST
Picture
Dreamgirls
The Queen
Little Miss Sunshine
The Departed
Babel
Actor
Forrest Whitaker
Will Smith
Peter O'Otoole
Ryan Gosling
Sacha Baron Cohen
(Yes, i left out Leo. Honestly, i think either Leo or O'toole are gonna get the shaft in this one. Although leo not getting the nom isn't as much of a shaft as O'toole not getting one).
actress
Helen Mirren
Judi Dench
Penelope Cruz
Meryl Streep
Maggie Gyllenhal
(oscar loves Winslet, and she has made a late surge, but Maggie will take that last spot. Also, you have to love the hot Dame on Dame action we're getting with Dench and Mirren)
Supp. Actor
Eddie Murphy
Jack Nicholson
Alan Arkin
Djimon Honsou
Mark Wahlberg
Supp. Actress
Jennifer Hudson
Cate Blanchett
Adrianna Barazza
Abigail Breslin
Rinko Kikuchi
(I have a strong feeling about Emily Blunt, but I have trouble putting her in over any of the 5 listed. If i were going to, the logical choice would be Breslin but she is exactly what the academy will eat up, so if Emily gets in, it will be over Rinko.)
Director
Martin Scorcese
Bill Condon
Alejandro Innaritu
Guillermo Del Toro
Stephen Frears
So those are my major cat. predictions.
My mild upset would be Patience getting the song nod for Dreamgirls. a number of predictors are saying DGs will get two Song Nods, in that case, it'll be Patience and Listen. Love you I do will get left out.
now that my illiterate rambling is over, you all can get back to the thread.

I am really, really, really hoping that Michael Sheen gets the nomination he so deserves. He's so damn solid in THE QUEEN - he deserves a nomination.
I actually went to see THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND again tonight. Loved it more this time. I think James McAvoy should SUE the producers for not pushing him. He deserves a nomination.

Posted: 1/23/07 at 8:59amWell I admit I was right originally about Dreamgirls but the Globes made me think they regained their buzz. I guess not! This is going to be an incredible race to the finish! I am extremely excited! Letters from Iwo Jima is a great film and I think it is an honorable film for Dreamgirls to lose out to.

I was totally right and completely not surprised. Not he won't admit it.
But I am crazy, I know that.
In frankly, I'm glad that DiCaprio was nominated for BLOOD DIAMOND - his performance in that was 5,000 times stronger than in THE DEPARTED - where he really didn't do much but run around and be a dick.

I'm just glad they didn't bump him down to supporting for The Departed to get the double nomination. And I must say I'm kind of thrilled Jack didn't get in there. McAvoy would have been a shock, and Sheen would have been AMAZING, but even Wahlberg is a fine choice, imho.

They couldn't have bumped him down for THE DEPARTED, he was already placed into the leading category, no?
I am shocked that Nicholson wasn't nominated. I wanted McAvoy or Sheen - personally - you need to do more than be a sarcastic ****to get an Oscar nomination (Wahlberg.)
#266re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread
Posted: 1/23/07 at 10:11amI thought they could petition for a category change (unlike the Globes that just place you where they see fit), and I thought for sure I read that they were going to try bumping him down for The Departed (I suppose not only in the hopes that he might get two nominations, but also in so that he might not cancel himself out completely). I hadn't read any final word on that, but I know the idea was being tossed around at some point.

Well, all that shows is that the voters aren't as gaga about THE DEPARTED as some people would like to believe they are.
It got only 4 nominations - and will probably only win one of them by default.

Five.
And I think DiCaprio was definitely nominated for the wrong movie. Oh, well. Good for him.

He was so much better in BLOOD DIAMOND!!!!!
But if the Academy were wild about THE DEPARTED, you'd see Nicholson and Leo at least.

What the hell!?!?
How did this happen??
I'm very sad right now; I mean it will definitely win a few awards but it completely deserved to at least get a Best Picture nomination. Iwo Jima, like I said before, just wasn't that great IMO. I know I'm gonna get a lot of slack for saying Dreamgirls is better than Iwo Jima but that's just my opinion. And Condon deserved a nomination over Iñárritu.
Now, who is the front-runner for Best Picture? God, I hope it's The Departed or Little Miss Sunshine...
And what the hell is with the Best Song category?! Dreamgirls is gonna perform THREE SONGS on Oscar night!? And at this point, is Listen still the frontrunner or do you think the three Dreamgirls songs will cancel eachother out?
I wonder how these snubs will affect Dreamgirl's box office...
#271re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread
Posted: 1/23/07 at 10:25amI'm telling you guys. Patience is the Best Song.

The DREAMGIRLS songs will cancel each other out.
Hudson and Murphy will probably still win.

Oh, and I'm THRILLED that Cohen didn't get a nomination and Gosling did.
Also excited for Children of Men and its Screenplay nomination.

So what song will win then? Please do not say that terrible song from CARS.
I think/hope (and am obviously biased because I loved Dreamgirls) that Listen could still very well win.
