"The Fountain" has nothing in common with "Titanic" or "Moulin Rouge." That article is interesting, though. And I disagree with his assessment that Hugh's performance is one of the 5 best leading male performances of the year. First off, Hugh was better in THE PRESTIGE.

And I remember reading that a lot of people thought Jim Broadbent's win for "Iris" that year happened because the Academy didn't want to give him the award for "Moulin Rouge."
If that article is correct, I'd imagine Hugh is more likely to be nominated for "The Prestige" (which was terrific in) than for "The Fountain."
I thought he was amazing in both, it would be great to see him nominated at all.
Hugh Jackman can't be better than any of these:
Forest Whitaker, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND
Peter O'Toole, VENUS
Will Smith, THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS
Leonardo DiCaprio, THE DEPARTED
Ryan Gosling, HALF NELSON
Matt Damon, THE DEPARTED
or even:
Aaron Eckhardt, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING

It's just a hypothetical...Hugh getting nominated at all is a longshot as best.
And yes, I think he was as good anyone you listed.
I saw The Fountain today with my mom! My opinion on it is its extremly artistic and different. There really isn't what you call a straight foward "plot" per-say; but it makes you think about whats going on, and what the characters are discussing, ect. I knew Rachel Weiz was a superb actress, but Hugh Jackman really suprised me. I thought he was amazing, and truly deserves some recognition for this role. But hey, this is just my two cents for ya
The sad thing? Even if everyone's saying awful things about it, I love Rachel Weisz enough to brave it to see her.
I still want to see it. That and "Deja Vu"

That's a bummer. I LOVE Requiem for a Dream - it's my #1 fav. movie - but I'm def. going to have to see this. At least the new Bond was good.
I actually enjoyed it. Not near perfect at all, I found it to be a really intriguing movie. Jackman and Weisz were both stunning, IMO. I say see it and judge for yourself. I actually liked it. I'd probably give it a B-/B.

Just came back.
Wow.
Mind-blowing.
Brilliant.
Incredible.
Amazing.
All I could have ever hoped for.
Thank you, Darren Aronofsky.
Yup, she has a small role. She keeps popping up in all of these movies that I've been seeing recently LOL.
I can't get over how incredible the cinematography and art direction for this film are. I hope they get Oscar nominations at LEAST.

Everything about this film is incredible. It may just because I am into experimental art films like this (how this got a major release is a beautiful mystery), but I was just completely riveted by this entire film.
I saw it last night.
The good:
Hugh and Rachel had wonderful chemistry.
The bad:
Everything else.

It will not vault itself from my brain. I think this is the best film of the year, even moreso than THE DEPARTED and GABRIELLE.
You aren't in the minority either, Cruel Sandwich....many people are loving this movie. Entertainment Weekly gave it a B+.
I guess it's too much for me to digest. I was keeping up with it until he turned into the flower bed. Then I lost it. And if the old guy was the First Father, how did Hugh turn into the First Father?
Ugh. I digress. : )
I really really really want to see this. Hopefully tomorrow.
I loved the review that described it as a cross between 2001 and an album cover for Yes.
Anyone feel any differently about the film after having some time to chew on it?
I didn't connect with it initially, but I appreciate the movie much more after having a while to let it bounce around in my mind.
I enjoyed it. I didn't LOVE it or anything, mainly because the pacing was soooooo slooooooooowwwwwww. But I found it to be an intriguing story and visually stunning.
Now, I just watched Inland Empire, and though I usually enjoy David Lynch's films (even if I don't completely understand them), it is definitely one of the worst films I've ever seen. EVER. So, if there was only one reason a person should appreciate The Fountain, it is simply the fact that it's NOT Inland Empire. GOD, that was wretched!
I still haven't seen it!
