Has anyone else seen this yet?
I saw it tonight, and let me just say I should have read the reviews first.
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.
I know the trailer looked intriguing, but it is a big, stinking pile of garbage.
About 17 people walked out in the first half hour. The only reason that I'm glad I stayed was to see the hilariously horrid ending.

Wow. I think it was Inteview Magazine that gave it a rave review.
Thanks for informing me. That was going to be my after thanksgiving movie.
I would love a synopsis including the ending. I don't plan on seeing it. I don't care for Rachel Weisz. Not sure why. I really think it's because the first thing I noticed her in was The Shape of Things and I hated her character so much I wanted to hurt her. I guess that means she is a hell of an actress. Too good.
She was great in THE CONSTANT GARDENER.
I couldn't give you a synopsis if I tried. Sorry. It just makes no sense.
I'm sure Cruel_Sandwich will think it's brilliant, though.
Not knocking Cruel_Sandwich, but of course he's going to think it's brilliant.
What would make it better?
And yes, you're supposed to have Evelyn in the Shape of Things. She may be the central character, but Adam is the protagonist.

Rachel was also pretty good in About A Boy (though she had a small part in it).
The Fountain's ads are rather captivating, I've got to say. I sort of wanted to see it but then my mom suggested we see Deck the Halls. I don't know which is worse, a silly Christmas movie or a movie that doesn't really seem to have a plot (based on what I've seen of the ads) other than the fact it's about the fountain of youth...
Decisions, decisions.

I'm trying to catch it this weekend, and I'm really nervous. It seems to be a love it or hate it deal, and I don't want to hate it.

Based on what I've read, it seems like a movie that a lot of people are going to have very different reactions to. It might not be the best after Thanksgiving movie pick, though.
"As early festival rumblings suggested and the final product confirms, you're either with The Fountain or you're against it."

"The reviews are coming in for The Fountain, and it’s looking more and more like I’m in the minority. I can’t say I’m surprised, but I was hoping for more. I was definitely hoping for braver critical thinking – many writers who bemoan the state of modern filmmaking seem to have completely written off a movie that tries to be different, that tries to rethink the rules of narrative, and that tries to be serious. That seems to actually be what is bothering most critics – The Fountain is a non-ironic, completely earnest look at very deep and spiritual issues."

I KNOW you are supposed to hate Weisz in Shape of Things, but I hated her TOO much...lol. The end of that movie made me so angry that I still have trouble seeing her other than the character! She was fantastic in the Constant Gardner, though.
Munk---I've heard nothing but bad things about it out here, from many different sources. With basically the same overall rant: It makes no sense at all!!
So, you're not alone... I just wish you'd heard the buzz going around first. I'm planning on staying away from it.
My condolences to your senses.
I don't even know what would have made it better.
I mean, the plot made no sense. It went from Hugh Jackman fighting a Mayan "king" to a show of him doing yoga and meditating in space for 5.8 hours. I have no idea.
You can generally tell if a movie is a turkey when the good reviews come from sources like the Des Moines Register or Sacramento Bee or any really obscure media source. Another bellweather sign is Larry King raving about it
I have to agree with Munk. I hated it, too. The movie looks good, and has some interesting ideas. But, overall, it's bleak, ponderous, and doesn't make much sense. Not to mention the cinematography is so underlit, it's painful to look at sometimes. But, Weisz is always manages to shine.
She was good, as was Jackman and Burstyn, but the awful overall quality of the film ultimately suffocates their performances.
I would like to see Aronofsky win the Razzie for this one.

you know i have to ask... how was donna murphy in it?
Fine. She wasn't in much.

I agree. Shame. Jackman works really hard.
I would like to see Aronofsky win the Razzie for this one.
Not with Simon West (When a Stranger Calls) and Michael Caton-Jones (Basic Instinct 2) in competition.
But to me, both films you mentioned where just failures that didn't try to be anything great.
THE FOUNTAIN tries to be Oscar bait, so the failure is greater.
I can't believe they are still pumping out FYC ads.
Rethought the narrative structure?
They did away with any semblance of narrative at all.
So you hated it, too?
I saw it a few weeks ago at a film festival in Zurich and enjoyed it. I had some concerns about not understanding what was going on, based on what I've read about Aronofsky's other films, but I had no problems.

"If you’re a movie lover who despairs that big-scale filmmaking today consists of little more than a self-cannibalizing system of clichés; if you are fed up with putatively ambitious movies that turn out to sorely lack not just vision but actual brains and actual heart as well, then you need, badly, to see The Fountain, soon, and under the most optimum viewing conditions available. It may well restore your faith in the idea that a movie can take you out of the mundane and into a place of wonderment."
Premiere Magazine review.
"The Fountain" has nothing in common with "Titanic" or "Moulin Rouge." That article is interesting, though. And I disagree with his assessment that Hugh's performance is one of the 5 best leading male performances of the year. First off, Hugh was better in THE PRESTIGE.
