Posted: 1/24/12 at 8:58amThey've been messing with the rules for Best Song for a while now. I'm not sure what they are, but it probably either has something to do with the number of eligible songs being low (they have a stricter criteria now. No "end credit" roll songs, etc.), or maybe there was a low percentage of nominees from the Music Branch of the Academy.

Well I'm thrilled The Muppets at least got one song nomination.
I seem to be in the minority, but I LOVED Extremely Loud so am glad to see it get a little bit of love.
I'm a little surprised by Mara beating out the much more deserving Swinton. Poor Tilda, snubbed for both I Am Love and Kevin.

Bichir (beat still my heart), Dujardin (ditto), Clooney, Pitt and Oldman.
Never in the history of the oscars, have five sexier men competed against each other for best actor.
And that's with Banderas, Fassbender and Gosling left out!

Tuxes will be quite enough for me thank you.
and speaking of Dujardin in a swimsuit - and much less - check out 0SS: Lost in Rio, esp the orgy scene.

Nummy Nummy In My Tummy!
It's an exciting race with some real surprises which doesn't happen every year. I (for one) am so happy with McCarthy and Wiig getting nominations. Sad there's no Charlize but happy DESCENDANTS got 5 noms.

Everything else just seems odd. Ah well.

Lazier nominations than usual.
I mean, a Best Pic nod for EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE? Over A SEPERATION, MELANCHOLIA, SHAME, HIGHER GROUND, DRIVE on and on and on.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 10:35amEXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE has two of the Oscars favorite components: 'tards and tragedy. How could they NOT nominate it?

Oh, it was so dreadful. SO dreadful. But this is the organization that awarded "Crash" over "Brokeback Mountain." Wake up, white people.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 10:42amOverall, I was happy to see Nick Nolte, Melissa McCarthy, Glenn Close, and Janet McTeer nominated (in addition to the deserving nominees like Dujardin, Bejo, Chastain, Davis etc who were sure things). The almost complete shut-out of DRIVE--especially Brooks and direction--irks me. And EXTREMELY LOUD getting a Best Picture nomination over BRIDESMAIDS proves again that the Academy will choose a tragic/melodramatic movie almost everyone dislikes over a comedy that received almost universal rave reviews.

I would have said Albert Brooks was the primary competition for Christopher Plummer in the Supporting Actor race, but now that Brooks didn't get nominated, I think Plummer is a shoo-in.
And I've seen Beginners.
It had some memorable and even semi-powerful moments in a very slow, mild film. Plummer was good, but I kinda see this as a "career" award for him. He's never won. He's old and respected. And he's Capt. Friggin' Von Trapp. This is the Don Ameche Honorary Award this year.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 10:52amNo question, besty. Plummer IS good in BEGINNERS, but his work is nowhere near the level of Brooks or Nolte or even Jonah Hill. (It's a good performance, but his performance in THE LAST STATION two years ago was much better) He'll win for the exact reasons you listed.

Plummer has given consistently good and memorable screen performances. I don't begrudge him this award.
Oscar isn't a science. Members vote with their hearts (if they have them). I think he'll definitely get enough emotional votes to win.

I guess 'The Adventures of Tintin' was too polarizing for the Oscar voters in the Best Animated Picture Category. I'm glad that 'Kung Fu Panda 2' got a nomination in that category. I'm also happy for Gary Oldman getting a nomination, he's a very talented actor. I had a feeling Leonardo DiCaprio would be snubbed since many critics didn't like 'J. Edgar', they felt he was the only good thing about it. It's also nice to see Pitt, Hill, and 'Moneyball' get nominations. 'The Help' deserved all of its nominations. Though I'm still undecided if I want Streep to win Best Actress for 'The Iron Lady' or Viola Davis. I'm kind of disappointed that "Life's a Happy Song" from 'The Muppets' did not get a nomination for Best Song.

Agreed about both "Beginners" and Plummer in it, best. It was a good movie; he gave a very good performance; neither are award-worthy.
I can't wait to see a lot of these other supporting performances I haven't seen yet, Brooks in "Drive," primarily. I adore him so, and he -- along with everything else to do with the movie -- was snubbed for "Out of Sight" 14 years ago.
