So the Academy likes Stephen Daldry films? I know the screenplay nods to Bridesmaids and A Separation was throwing each film but really?
Oswalt and Brooks should be nominated. I thought the Academy liked comedians taking dramatic turns.
I think Fassbender and Mulligan were hurt by Shame's rating. If some Academy members refused to watch Brokeback Mountain, I doubt they would consider an NC 17 film on sex addiction.
Thrilled for Oldman and Nolte.
I am disappointed 'Star Spangled Man' from Captain America was not up for original song. It was the one performance I was looking forward to see.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 11:11amHas any reason been given as to why there are only two songs nominated? Is it a rules thing? I definitely would have thought "Living Proof" from THE HELP, "Lay Your Head Down" from ALBERT NOBBS, and Madonna's song from W/E would have been nominated.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 11:14amWell because Madonna's song wasn't the first music cue when the film ended (or something like that) it's ineligible. Hopefully people will realize what an absolutely ridiculous rule that is because of this and change that. It's like saying you can't nominate Meryl Streep because she didn't appear in the first 10 minutes of a film.

That rule actually grew out of a backlash that studios were tacking on songs almost as a marketing tool at the end of a film, during the credits. It had nothing to do with the actual movie and felt completely disconnected from the film itself. And there were a lot of nominations in recent years (apparently) that caused this internal complaint from Academy members.
So they changed the rule. Originally, a few years ago, the song had to appear in the film itself. It couldn't just roll over the credits, even in the first cue position. They have changed it a bit to allow a first cue during the roll, but not a cue after that. Madonna's song was a second cue in the credit roll. Still, she did write the song specifically for the film and with the film in mind. It was last-minute, but that shouldn't matter. Actually many songs (and most film music) is written right up to the last possible moment before screenings and sometimes after screenings have already started.
I think they should change the rule again. For example, if a song's melody is used anywhere in the underscoring, introducing it, it should be eligible automatically (assuming it's indeed original), regardless of where it ultimately plays in the film, even during the credit crawl and even three songs in. It shouldn't matter. But I do agree that if it's a tacked-on song, played only in the credits, existing nowhere else in the film, it's not really part of the movie per se.
It's a strange category anyway. It made more sense when songs were nearly always integrated in the body of a film. This rule makes it (almost) mandatory now.

AC, that Oldman wasn't nominated for The Contender is a travesty. A much better performance, IMHO, than the one he's given in Tinker Tailor.
Certainly, the competition was fierce this year and she's not the only one who got left out, but I can't help wondering whether Tilda Swinton will ever get a best leading actress nomination.
I didn't catch that Brooks wasn't nominated. That's the shock of the morning.
But whom I really pity this morning is Julie Andrews, who has to decide which of two of her favorite leading men and this year's supporting sentimental favorites she'll vote for, Chris or Max.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 11:36amI do find it strange that Madonna, the Weinsteins, ANYBODY didn't realize this when placing the song.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 11:37amI have to disagree (a little) about what people are saying about Plummer. I just watched the film last night. I think it is a superb performance. Masterful. Damn near perfect. It moved me tremendously. The economy with which he creates that character is something ever actor should strive for. I know I do. Yes...it was a quiet performance, in a very quiet film. But I don't think it, in any way, would be a disservice to anyone if he were to win. It's a gem, and absolutely deserves the recognition it's getting.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 11:41am^ The Golden Globes' rules regarding original songs (and other categories, such as Foreign Language films) are far less draconian than at the Oscars. That said, the last time a song won both awards was only two years ago: "The Weary Kind," from CRAZY HEART.

Since Madonna was the director, she easily could have moved it, had she known. I'm assuming she didn't know about the rule. It has changed in recent years. Either that, or she didn't care. I know for sure Harvey Weinstein cares.
By the way, I find it (mildly) interesting that both Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain are featured in two Best Picture nominees, and they're both up for awards themselves.

Robbie, I didn't think Plummer was any better than Euan McGreggor, who has yet to receive any Oscar love. Not even a nomination.
They are good performances, no question about it with me.

Yes, it is.
So did they change the rule again or not? The "no songs that play only over credits" rule is at least 5 to 7 years old now. I figured they had changed it again to allow first cue songs, since it was recently mentioned regarding the Madonna song's ineligibility (being a second cue).
So did the Blige song just not make the cut, or was it ineligible, meaning this is the same rule that's been in place for several years already?
"We don't need no stinking second cues!"

A former colleague was on the short list for Original Song. She posted the list, and I remember it being rather lengthy...hence my shock at the two noms.
And I agree, besty, that McGregor was terrific in the film. But the role of the passive observer rarely gets recognized by the Academy. I'm still not over his snub for Moulin Rouge.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 12:34pmI have to say (and I know I'm in the minority on this one), but I thought SHAME was ridiculous. Just absurd. Not only did I not recognize a single, identifiable real human being in the film, but I found some of it just laughable. That New York, New York moment was absolutely unbearable. The one sequence I thought that worked was the whole gay sex club/threesome with two girls moment. And only cause it was actually kind of hot and beautiful...which I think was the EXACT opposite reaction that the filmmaker wanted me to have. The guy who played the boss? One of the worst screen performances I've ever seen. For my consideration? Considered. And no thanks.

Boo to the snubs for Swinton, Fassbender, and Drive.
I love the fact that McCarthy was nominated. Love it a lot. She won't win, but I love that her name is on that list.

Robbie, I agree 120% with your thoughts on SHAME.
I'm disappointed that Swinton wasn't nominated. I'd say it was because her film lacked visibility, but both Glenn Close and Janet McTeer managed to pull out Oscar nominations, and their film (like KEVIN) only played a one-week qualifier run. As I said in another thread, I wasn't a fan of ...KEVIN overall, but Swinton's performance was tremendous.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 12:50pmThere were highly acclaimed (and/or should have been) performances by leading women this year. In addition to the nominees: Dunst, Theron, Olsen, Swinton, Wasikowska, Wiig, Gainsbourg.... and that's just the ones in English. They couldn't all be nominated.

Very sad that Shailene Woodley was left out of the Supporting Actress race. She, IMHO, should be winning that award.
Although I knew it wasn't going to happen, Charlize Theron should also be on the Best Actress list. I'd vote for her, most likely. And I've seen all the performances nominated. She's tremendous.
