Just checking in! My friend Susan is here visiting me this weekend. She got here around midnight last night and we stayed up really late watching the DVD of Wonderfalls. It's such a cute show! We're going for a walk through the city this afternoon and then picking our other friend Scott up at the bus station. Talk to everyone later!! Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!
Okay, this may already have been discussed but I did a search and I didn't see it. Did you all see Adam in the movie SLC Punk? He is soooo cute!
I watched the movie simply because I knew he was in it. I watched it twice, and just didn't really.... get it. I really tried, but I didn't like it. Adam was cute. I loved his line about people giving him sh*t because they think he's gay. "It's not that they wanna fight me, it's that they wanna f*ck me."
Yeah, the movie was a little...different? Great line. Such a pretty boy.
The orange leather jacket and the Britsh accent are also quite classic.
I thought that movie would be his big break into the film biz but that didn't really happen. Is it wrong that I'm torn as to whether I would want him to be a huge movie star or to continue on as B-way star? (but of course, if the movies are what he's after then I wish him the best!) I guess I just hope that he continues to do theatre.
Well, it was a small role. I'm so torn. I've been twirling the idea of it all around in my head for a VERY long time. I'm so proud of him and how far he's come, and whatever you'd like to call my connection to him has grown far beyond the "oh, dude. You're hot, I love your voice, marry me" breed of fandom. I care a lot - I want him to do whatever makes him happy, because he deserves all of the joy and success on the planet. I'd be sad if he went on to become a giant movie star so that I never saw him on a stage again, but I can't say I wouldn't watch his career, beaming with pride. I do think about what'll happen if his career skyrockets from the movie, and if suddenly getting tickets to see him perform becomes one of those things where you have to be ready, phone in hand the moment they go on sale. It would be bittersweet, I guess. I suppose when it's as personal as it gets with theatre actors, you develop a bit of a sense of ownership. But, in the fall, when I started to see him sing his own material a lot, I saw that his heart is without a doubt in music. He'll be back.
i don't know if big movie success is what he wants. he started doing broadway as a sort of side thing. his real passion has always been his music so i don't think he'll ever leave that. but if he wants to make movies i'll be watching! and it would be kind of cool to have a movie "star" come from broadway. that doesn't happen very frequently. *waiting patiently for pictures*
Okay, after I posted I thought "I'm going to get reamed for asking that question". I almost edited it! So Emcee, I thank you for being honest in your response. It is so strange to want the best for all the actors involved in the RENT movie and for the film to be super successful but still want to keep a part of all of it for myself. Just thinking about all the friends/coworkers who have made fun of me for listening to the OBC recording on repeat. And how most likely they will end up falling in love with it once it's on the big screen.

Regarding Adam's acting...... I have read numerous reviews about how Adam's acting wasn't quite, well, spectacular in Aida. I was just wondering, after Adam performed in Cabaret, if his acting had improved. What were your opinions of him in Cabaret or in Aida before it closed? I saw Aida before it closed, but it was my first time seeing Adam in real life so I pretty much viewed the whole show through rose-tinted glasses. Any thoughts?
I actually thought his acting in Aida originally was stronger than on his return. He tried harder upon his return but his acting was not very impressive.
QM
Em-LEE - His acting has taken so many leaps and bounds, it's unbelievable. You can't play that role as well as he did if you don't have decent acting chops. AND, he didn't even audition. Apparently he'd been after the part for a while, and got a call saying he could close the show and had to be ready in two weeks.
I saw AIDA in its first year, and remember very little of his performance, unfortunately. I had no idea who he was, and was totally unfamiliar with RENT. The first time I saw him do anything after that was CABARET. I'd heard stories about how he wasn't the best actor, and I'll be the first fan with her head in the clouds to admit that he's not. AIDA round one... well, he just did it for too long, and he got bored. It showed, and a lot of people were pretty disappointed in his performance toward the end. CABARET was brilliant - that was the beginning of where I stand today on my thoughts about him. I was so proud of him, and he really grabbed my attention in more ways than the previous good looks and beautiful voice way. When he returned to AIDA, I had nothing LIVE by which to compare, but you could tell that he'd improved a ton, and his energy was so much higher than it had been. He looked happy to be back, too. The facial expressions, everything were wonderful. He's consistent to a fault; you can almost track him to when he's going to raise an eyebrow, and his best acting is through music. I like my rose-colored glass, too, but if he wasn't packed with talent, though talent that's a little bit more solid in one department than another, I wouldn't be as deep into this as I am.
Adam in RENT is just... this tour-de-force that I can't explain. Didn't see it live... I was only ten when it first opened, but it's something very special. He's absolutley got what it takes, at least in musical theatre acting. Straight acting may not work out to be his forte, but he's a musician before he's anything else.
Alix - exactly. I don't know if it is, either. I suppose one wouldn't complain, because that's nice and all, but you can tell that the music is what's important, I think. And, right now at least, that's all based in New York, and within the Broadway community. Maybe the movie will change that, get more people to notice.
.... which brings me back to the original quandary of wanting success and wanting to "keep" him. It's a weird thing to think about, I guess.
I'll let those who have seen Adam live more than I have answer the acting question, except to say that from what I've seen of his Cabaret performance *cough*, he's become quite capable as an actor. As far as movie stardom goes, I think it's very up in the air. Even if the movie does really well and Adam personally gets a lot of publicity from it, that doesn't mean he'll then be a big movie star. He would have to work hard to build on that success, and as others have said, I don't think that's where his heart is. I was thinking about the buzz from his original Rent performance, which I've only found out about in retrospect. He didn't really follow up on it by, for instance, immediately getting into another hot musical. Apparently he wasn't sure he wanted a career on Broadway at the time, and the same situation could apply to the movie.

I think you're right. I couldn't understand why people had said that his acting wasn't incredible after listening to him on the RENT OBCR. He conveys so much emotion through his voice. When he sings Glory, it's absolutely heartbreaking. I am glad to hear that his acting has improved over the years. I swear, the man is like wine, he just gets yummier as he ages.
Right, Chloe. And, he turned down a role in a film that would put him in almost every single frame of the movie to do Cabaret. Part of it was money, but most of it was how badly he wanted that role.
A lot of the RENT publicity stuff is kind of strange to hear about - that he didn't really know what to do with all of it, etc. *shrug*
We'll see, I guess.
Everyone knows how much I love Adam but for all of you who have seen more Emcees than just his in Cabaret KNOW that his acting wasn't very strong in Cabaret.
I was suprised how well he did considering his experience but still one of the weaker Emcees I have seen.
QM
Oh, Jon Secada. Well, he was good for his own capabilities, I think is more what I mean when I say how good he was. When I heard, I was like "no, this isn't ever going to work. I love you, but what?"
QM, I have nothing with which to compare him as the Emcee, and didn't see him live, but I certainly don't think he performed badly. I can easily imagine that others were more naturally suited to the role and better actors, but that in itself doesn't make his performance bad. A bad performance seems bad in whatever context, while a comparison of performers can rank some above others without making anything of them actually bad. ::has put "bad" in that paragraph far too many times, but doesn't know how to fix it::
Chloe, it is difficult to judge someone's acting on a bad copy of a bootleg (there is only one Cabaret bootleg out there and it is a very shaky one). His Emcee did not have the required depth and don't get me started on the accent.
I guess if you were a bit more familiar with Cabaret and had seen the show etc you would know where I was coming from. And I don't mean that in an arrogant way.
I agree with you, Emcee and that's how I felt. When I heard he was cast as The Emcee I was very worried for him. I was relieved when I saw him as he did a lot better than I though he would.
QM
I certainly agree with you on the bootleg issue, though I've thought of it as being subtractive. In other words, that a performance would seem less than it was, rather than more. I guess what impressed me the most was how much Adam escaped from his previous stage personas, and how comfortable he seemed on stage. (test test test - for some reason, none of my paragraphing has been showing up today)
Yeah, what's wrong with the paragraphs?
I totally agree with you about the confidence on stage and how comfortable he seemed (except when he sat on Victor's lap ).
I just had real issues with his facial expressions, accent etc.

I'm not in any position to judge because I've only seen a poorly shot boot of Adam in Cabaret, but this conversation has me wondering.QM, I hope this doesn't come across as nasty or sarcastic, but why do you like Adam if you didn't care for his performance in either Aida or Cabaret?
