You have to pick all your classes throughout high school?!?! Are you in 8th grade now?

The subjects at school don't particularly give a great idea of what the careers associated with them would actually be like...

Yes, we have to pick our first year of classes by next week. Although this isn't all 4 years, all of the classes depend on each other- since you can't get out of it.

I want to just be 13, but it's hard with all of this crap being pressured onto us all at once. I have no freaking idea what I want to do with my life, and they want us to basically choose now.

i started looking at colleges when i was about 14, 15. you sort of fo have to look early. it helped, i think. i mean, at least figure out where you want to be (geological), how big you want the college or university to be. that sort of thing.

I think it seems like it completely determines it, but it REALLY doesn't.

If you don't take chorus for awhile it wouldn't stop you from pursueing singing, especially if you continue voice lessons and participate in school plays etc...

And maybe you'll end up learning to love spanish.

And just because you're a fan of musical theater, doesn't mean you necessarily want to make it a career, lemme tell you its a lot less stress being a fan.

First, relaaax!
Choose hard courses, but don't completely overwhelm yourself, and choose electives that you will enjoy (i.e. chorus), and well as some that will be academically stimulating. Most colleges require four years of the same language, although you can graduate High School with only 2 (at least in NJ).

It's okay not to have any idea what you want to do, believe me, I'm a grade older than you and completely clueless The *Official* Greg Jbara Love Thread

And Cat still has a pic of her as her av The *Official* Greg Jbara Love Thread

Umm...I had things to say. I'm exhausted. All the highschools were delayed but college was on time, had all my classes, but whatever, there were just a couple of roads I had to drive slow on, otherwise I was fine.

Ooh, learned a couple of interesting things in adol. psych today(if anyone feels this is inappropriate, or I shouldn't be posting about it, please let me know and I apologize) but my teacher defined herpes as "the gift that keeps on giving" and apparently gannaria(sp?) is currently as common to have as a cold. That's scary.

Ooh, I love Ruthie Annie! Have you heard her on the Les Miz 10th Anniv. Concert CD? She's great, I adore her I Dreamed A Dream! There's a DVD of that that obviously she's in too. Her ascention to shame is eargasmic (I'm beginning to use that word a lot...) But if you like that song, I highly suggest you try listening to some more of Miss Saigon, no matter how you feel about the kind of show or even the story, the music is gorgeous, one of the most beautiful scores ever. I got to play highlights from it on my clarinet and as I was playing, I couldn't believe such beauty was coming out of my instrument. And you call 80s Broadway classic...oy gavolt.

Umm, hope the show went well Dre!

Mary, everyone's right, don't worry about it. You don't have to even declare college majors until your junior year of college. The only high school classes that could have any impact on your college experience, credits, etc. are AP classes. Otherwise, just take whatever the hell you want, whatever you'll have the most fun in. I'm majoring in psych, though I'm considering a double major/minor in music, and I'm also being encouraged to consider...if not majoring/minoring then taking a lot of classes in the realm of...backstage theatre? business theatre? something like that. Who knows? We'll see I guess.

Once again, no conforming from me. God forbid I replace my gorgeous avatar w/ something soo incredibly less attractive than it (me, though everything is really).

I didn't start looking at colleges until sophmore yearish.. but I never really had to figure out what I wanted to major in. I'd known since I was like 7.

Don't worry too much about first year classes, trust me. The classes don't depend on each other that much - don't worry about your freshman year especially. I'd say definitely go for a choir class or something, if you really love singing.

Furthermore, majors aren't really that important either unless you're going until a technical skill career(like engineering). My sister's best friend went to med school w/ her, and he majored in English! I didn't start thinking about colleges until summer going into junior year.

And Cat, don't underestimate the stress of being a fan...I mean...the stress of lotto can be awful, as can driving down to get rush not sure if you're early enough to get them, etc. very, very stressful.

Funny you should mention that Amanda. When I was taking Adolescent Psyhcology, I had a great and funny teacher. Unfortunately, he sooooooooo deterred from the subjects that we never really talked about adolescent psychology. The only thing I really remember out of that class was the time we discussed Eva Brom and Adolf Hitler's sexual escapades. I'm not kidding.

I didn't take sociology until my senior year of highschool and I liked it but not loved it.

Then I had to take a few classes of sociology to fulfill my diversified education requirements, realized I didn't want to give up sociology classes, and now I'm a sociology major, which I just decided last semester...

Ooh, and that's something else that you of course don't need to decide on but keep in mind. Colleges greatly vary on core curriculum requirements. Like Columbia is one of the strictest, you hafta take prob at least 2-3 classes in science, math, language, music/arts, writing, literature, humanities, social sciences, etc. But then some liberal arts colleges have absolutely no core requirements except of course those in your major.

GW had a lot of requirements, but were lenient in diff. ways you could fulfill them

One writing course
2 lit courses or something
2 math courses(could be stats, doesn't hafta be calc)
2 lang/culture courses(so didn't need a lang, I liked that)
3/4 humanities courses...soo many things fulfilled that
2 social science courses
and 3 credits in music/arts, you could take 3 1-credit classes or 1 3-credit class or something
2 science courses

But APs immensely helped me there. With APs I met all of my humanity requirements, all of my math, one science, and one lit.

Sigh. I'm supposed to be doing this social studies project. I thought it was going to be great, but I really don't want to do it.

We're supposed to explain 14 causes of the civil war in a song.

Our group picked Baby Got Back, after my trying to push It Sucks To Be You and several other theater songs.

And now, I'm stuck with all of the work and I don't want to perform this at all. I'd rather write an essay.

here are my requirements:

freshman seminar
Writing Intensive course
Quantitative Reasoning course (math, physics, science, a lot of things)
2 Arts and Humanties (philosophy, relgion, Eastern Studies, literature in any language except english, women's studies, art, theatre, music, film dance)
2 Social Sciences courses
2 Laboratory courses
language course up to intermediate level
1 US Diversity course
1 Comparative Civilizations course
4 halfsemester courses of PE

and then, to complete your major, 9-15 classes in that area.

it seems like a lot, but it really isn't. and by having these requirements, you can take classes you never thought you could and like it and maybe even major in it.

hope this helps.

Also, if you go to a school with a religious affirmation (i.e. St Johns) you are usually required to take theology classes. I had to take 3 theology classes and 1 elective (along with 3 philosophy classes)
