You know, Raul has had so many photos on the BWW home page for a while that I now get nervous when he doesn't have one or two. Is he ok?
I was wondering that as well, Jenna. Something recorded perhaps -- or maybe Matt? They might as well just give Raul a toy piano and have him plunk along on that at this point.
I have a feeling that they'll go with something recorded for Regis and Kelly. It's kind of a bummer, but at least it's publicity, right?
I just hope that it winds up on that site (you know, the evil one with the video clips that no one should condone or watch?) in a timely fashion, because I have to work through the show...
It mind even end up on their website.
I hope so, but I'll drag myself out of bed early to watch the show anyway
If anyone's interested...
THE LEADING MEN
Love the COMPANY cast recording
Raul is amazing.
Whoa to the headshot.
What an interesting interview.
I guess his friendship with Michael Mayer explains part of the Spring Awakening thing, but reading this completely reaffirmed my notions that Doyle is an absolute genius. I'm not familiar with the working methods of many directors, but I just love hearing about the way Doyle works. I love the way he pushes and actors and really works WITH them as opposed to just telling them what to do. I like that he knows where he wants (or perhaps more accurately doesn't want) them to end up, but won't just flat-out tell it -- he'll push them there and let them figure it out for themselves. I think that really makes for better performers. And, as someone who experiences those strong reactions to Raul's work often, I like that one of the questions deals with that. The visceral response I often have to Company is so fascinating to me, because it's not something that happens to me a lot.
I'm absolutely fascinated with Doyle as well. I love reading about his processes. I've worked with directors who literally just tell you what to do (to the point where I've asked them if they'd rather just do it for me), and I've worked with others who push and pull you through the whole journey until you reach the end. It's a little frustrating, but you learn so much more from the latter.
I want to meet him and like, thank him, because he can do those kinds of things to audience members, too, I think. Even just sitting and watching, I've had a lot of my own perceptions rocked by his work. I've learned a valuable lot about what I actually believe theater is, isn't and should be just by seeing the Sondheim revivals so many times.
It's too bad directors don't stagedoor, eh?
Seriously though, I think that generally the public doesn't give directors enough credit. They assume that its all on the actor, but I'm seen some great actors in some really poorly directed plays (and vice versa!)
He was around when I saw an early preview, but I was too shy to approach him.
I am the proud owner of a front row seat for tonight. Meep!
That's quite exciting -- How many times have you seen it now?
Undisclosed.
Are you in the double digits yet???

you're seeing it tonight? have fun! we know you will review.
I think I wont be able to see it again until after the Tonys.
Have fun tonight, Em!
I'm even more impressed with Doyle as well (though I've long been an admirer). I can't even imagine how liberating it would be to simply experiment with the show and test different ideas in the manner Raul described. And I think it was great for Raul to be pushed in the rehearsal process, just as he was bordering complacency. It's certainly been worth it.
Ah, curtain up right now for em! Enjoy - I am so ready to go back again, and I was just there last week!
I hope Em's having a good time at the show.
I really like the Playbill interview. Especially the part where he talks about associating Sondheim with his freshman year of college and discovery of what Broadway is.
It sounds like the way Doyle works would be heaven for an actor in terms of allowing them to experiment a million different ways with scenes. It definitely prevents them from coming in and knowing exactly what choices they'll make.

Hah, I heard him talking to you! We were still waiting while he was chatting with your friends.
The show was really, really fun. It was go nice to go back, I'd been away a long while. There's nothing really... to "review" at this point, though, you know? The Bobby/Kathy scene continues to change and become sweeter, sadder and more affectionate. I love the Bobby/Joanne scene more and more every time, because I love the way it tricks me into thinking one thing, then just a minute later, another.
I'm so jealous! I saw the show exactly one week ago for the second time and afterwards he and Michele came out the stage door together. She got into the car, and he signed my CD, and posed for a picture for the other people who were there, but obviously he was in a hurry and they were gone in less than 3 minutes.
His performance that night was different and better than the CD and anything I have seen on that site that has clips. He channeled so much power up there, and he never had to resort to any cheap tricks or scenery chewing. It was authentic naked emotion sent all the way to the last row of the theater. Simply incredible!
