Posted: 9/14/08 at 1:05amThought Phelps did a commendable job. He is NOT and actor, not a comedian, he is an Olympic Athlete who is in demand for having won a record 8 medals. He was brave enough to get up in front of the camera act foolish and at least try. Bravo to him!

Posted: 9/14/08 at 1:18amThis was the best part of SNL. Weekend Update was sort of funny, but all you need to see is on the clip above. These SNL writers are just sad. I have seen High School talent show writers better than this. No Obama or McCain sketch tonight. I had heard Amy was gone this season, so I was pleasantly surprised to see her back. Tina HAS TO do Sarah Palin now. NO ONE else can do her like Tina. Tina was better than the real Sarah Palin. She should tour city to city as Sarah Palin for the Democrats. Seriously!

SNL hasn't been funny in years. It was amazing in the 90s and early 2000s, but now I could barely sit through an entire episode. It has gotten so repetitive and unfunny. That Fred Armisen newspaper guy on Weekend Update has been done over and over again, and it's not gonna be the last time we see it. The ugly children sketch tonight was somewhat funny but the same thing has been done!
This cast is really weak. Remember the early 90s it was Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, David Spade, etc, and then it was Will Farrell, Molly Shannon, Cheri O'Teri, Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, Tracy Morgan etc. This cast isn't even close to that level.

Once Tina left it really went downhill.
I wonder who was writing the sketches that were actually funny? lol
Wait...Amy's pregnant?! She looks amazing!

Posted: 9/14/08 at 1:37amI think it became a complete mess after Jimmy Fallon left. I wasn't the biggest fan of Jimmy Fallon but after he left, I realized what an asset he was to the show.

Tiny F killed it as Palin. I havent laughed that hard in a while. Hilarious intro.
After that it was a huge nose dive down hill. SNL hasnt been funny since the good ol' Will F, Ana G, Molly S, and Cheri O days. But tonight was worse than usual.
I did think the "peppa!" skit was pretty amusing in a stupid way.
Phelp... worst. host. ever. Poor guy.
Hope they do more Tina F / Palin skits in the future.

Yes and I also remember people saying the exact same things about the writing and the show then with those cast members! "SNL hasn't been funny in years. This cast sucks compared to the Belushi, Curtain, Ackroyd years!" Now they are a golden example of what the show should be.

There's a difference between funny sketches and painfully unfunny sketches though.
I've only heard of how great SNL was back in the day. Never witnessed it myself. It may have been a let down for people to see such a great set of players go and be replaced by people who are trying to fill their shoes. That's what happening to me now, except that right now it really isn't funny!
I wasn't around yet during the Dan Ackroyd, Jane Curtain, John Belushi days. I think I was born when Eddie Murphy started. I started watching SNL in the early-mid 90s, and it was hilarious to me then. I find it hard to believe that kids starting to watch SNL for the first time ever to find the material on now funny. But then again, someone a decade older than me probably said the same thing I just did, huh?

Yes, Verynewyork, it is called aging outside of the demographic the show is geared to.
Even if you were to revisit the original shows you would find painfully unfunny skits, that were too long and they didn't know how to end them.
There are always a handful of sketches that shine, even with the worst cast dynamics and those become what we remember.

i dont remember that. i actually remember people talking about how the new cast of Cheri, Molly and Will had reinvigorated SNL. They revived it after a few dull years post-Sandler and Mike Meyers.
They were huge. Even took the cover of Rolling Stone. The Spartans, Mary Katherine Gallagher... the cast and writing was hilarious.
The show has not been funny for years. Even tho they have some great cast members. Its all in the terrible writing.

Posted: 9/14/08 at 8:00amHysterical opening. What does FLIRG mean? Like Hillary, I googled it but found nothing. Am I spelling it incorrectly?
#92re: Tina Fey
Posted: 9/14/08 at 8:32amOn the plus side, James Franco is hosting next week. Phelps was just a disaster. His 15 minutes were up a couple weeks ago. Why do they have athletes host? Have any done a good job?

OMG, that was HILARIOUS! Tina was perfect!!! And although Amy doesn't look like Hillary, she was funny.
I mean seriously, Tina looked EXACTLY like her.
#94re: Tina Fey
Posted: 9/14/08 at 9:08amI laughed during the Sarah Palin skit, but that's about it. I gave up after the ugly children skit... I was too bored watching it.
#95re: Tina Fey
Posted: 9/14/08 at 9:26amThe opening skit was hilarious. Was it pre-taped? Amy P's costume change seemed almost too quick and I can't imagine why they wouldn't have used Fey at least once more during the course of the show. They could have thrown in one more skit of her as Palin being interviewed by Charlie Gibson or have her appear on Weekend Update. Fey should have her own .... oh wait ... she already does. Well... she should have her own show playing Palin. Now that would be hilarious! Sooooooo much material. Any suggestions on a title?

Posted: 9/14/08 at 10:48amTina is not a regular on SNL anymore. She is busy with 30 Rock which she says takes up most her time, She agreed to do some appearances on SNL, so I am guessing she will do maybe one sketch a week or so til the election. We all knew Tina was going to be great, but I don;t think anyone thought she would be as good as she was. She is by far the BEST SNL political impersonator mostly due to the two's resemblance. Once Sarah was announced and I saw her for the first time the first thing I thought was, Tina Fey. Sarah Palin has made Tina just a little bit more richer and in demand now. I still think Amy would be great as Bristol.

Tina Fey was amazing - I said half way through that first skit that that would be a classic. It's too bad the show just isn't very funny otherwise (although I still think some of the Weekend Update jokes are funny). They need to get rid of Fred Armisen - the guy is in every skit and he's not at all funny. That newspaper thing was beyond bad - it wasn't even so bad it's funny - it was just not funny at all.
That said, I grew up during the Mike Myers, Dana Carvey years and to me that'll always be the best SNL...

Phelps was not good, but he was not the worst host ever. Nancy Kerrigan anyone?!?
However, I don't think any host could have made that material last night funny.

Posted: 9/14/08 at 11:13amTina is my hero! I bet that new girl does Palin for the rest of the season. And I actually like Fred Armisen's political comedian. It's a one-joke bit but every time he does it I laugh! I think I'm the only person left that likes this cast.
