I dunno. I thought the opening, the Jar opener commercial, the quiz show and most of Weekend Update were pretty damn funny, to name a few. I thought it missed the mark in some sketches, but I got several good laughs out of it, which is what I always expect.
I, for one, was never happier when Jimmy Fallon left. I never thought he was funny.

Posted: 9/14/08 at 12:55pmI only saw the opening. Tina was AMAZING, but even then, the writing of the skit could've been funnier.

Part of SNL's charm is that it's never "as good as it used to be." But people tend to forget that it has always been hit or miss. It's a generational thing, I think. In about 5 years, people will say, "SNL hasn't been good since the days of Poehler, Wiig, and Forte." That's how I see it. Yes, some episodes are better than others, but I've been an avid SNL fan since 1998 and I've always enjoyed watching it.
I do, however, miss that Comedy Central doesn't show old SNL episodes anymore. Instead, we're stuck with the sophomoric, completely off-the-mark, frat boy's version of sketch comedy, MADTV.

I completely agree Quibbler.
I usually watch MadTV for a 1/2 hour until SNL is on, but I couldn't even make it through that. It was PAINFUL. (Bobby Lee as John McCain? Seriously?) That show will make you appreciate SNL so much more.
It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

They have to keep Fred Armisten. He plays Barack Obama.
I noticed that Mad TV added a tall, thin black girl to their cast. Obviously hired to play Michelle obama.

I wish MADTv would get rid of Bobby Lee. He's never been funny to me, I don't get it.
MADTv has gotten pretty painful, too. They used to have some pretty damn funny parodies.
Writing apparently is the big issue.

Old SNL episodes are now shown on the E! Network.

I liked the Palin/Clinton, jar, and t-mobile sketches. Aside from those I found everything else a little disappointing. I thought it would've been cool if they'd used Tina as Cathy during the weekend update since they did the chocolate thing on 30 rock.

"Thought Phelps did a commendable job. He is NOT and actor, not a comedian, he is an Olympic Athlete who is in demand for having won a record 8 medals. He was brave enough to get up in front of the camera act foolish and at least try. Bravo to him!"
Come on, this isn't community theater. Bravo to him? What about us poor saps who are hoping to be entertained by a sketch comedy show?

Posted: 9/14/08 at 7:35pmI hope that the opening of last nights show is a sign of things to come this season. Tina and Amy were amazing.

Posted: 9/14/08 at 7:50pmMichael Phelps should have said no to hosting. This is NOT his forte and even the vet actors couldn't help him. I was very disappointed in the lame sketches- except for the opening. I have been watching SNL since its debut. I keep hoping it will get better. I thought Casey Wheldon would be a regular this year. Keenan brings nothing to the table except the same character over and over again. I wish Michael McDonald and Nicole Parker were on SNL.

Posted: 9/14/08 at 7:51pmAs expected, after the opening, it was all downhill. The second sketch was enough for me.

Posted: 9/14/08 at 8:21pmCan anyone honesty say they thought Michael Phelps was going to be a comedic genius or blow them out of the water with his acting skills? I will bet everyone saw exactly what they expected when they heard he was going to host. I know I did.

Phelps was so wooden.
It was great to see Bobby Moynihan make it onto SNL. He's been a fixture at the UCB Theater for years.

I know this thread is kind of old now, but I just realized I saw her(Erica Ash)in the lion king. Random.

If by old, you mean 2005, then yes they do show old episodes on E!
They need to get E! to show the older episodes like they did in 2003-2004. And also, what happend to NBC showing the classic episodes at 3 AM? I miss those days.

Elphiesmagic, everyone who heard he was going to guest host said they thought he was going to be horrible. Everyone. We all watched him giving interviews, we all have seen him doing commercials (unless we have been living under a rock). We all KNEW what his acting abilities were and for the most part tuned in to see some funny political humor and watch the train wreck that was Michael Phelps trying to act. He did not disappoint, he was a train wreck. If you were expecting any different then I guess that is your problem. I commend him for having the balls to do it.
Phelps is in demand at the moment and that moment is passing. I do believe his 15 minutes are just about over. I do not hold it against him his enjoying his moment in the spot light. Now we have something to compare the other bad shows to. "Yeah but it wasn't as bad as the Phelps show!"
As a very wise friend told me, "To be remembered you have to be the Very Best, or the Very Worst!". Phelp's will be remembered in both categories.
