That's definitely valid. There's "changing it up" and then there's being bored and trying showy things that aren't in service to the material. I think that when he really connects with something, he avoids the latter (e.g. Company), and given the themes/setting of Kiss of the Spider Woman, maybe it would be something he'd really like. Molina just strikes me as a more layered character...I'd love to see what Raul would do with the balance of comedy and emotional weight in the role. I also can't really picture him leading "The Day After That" if he were to play Valentin, although I'm not sure why.
I wondered whether he'd be open to playing Molina, too. He did The Normal Heart (and brilliantly, at that), but he had a bit more to hide behind at that point.
On a totally shallow note, if he ever WERE to do the show, the scene after "Anything for Him" would be amazingly hot.

Alrighty, I haven't been around in a while, what's this about a concert tonight? And what happened on the other thread to get it deleted? If we can't discuss it here, pm please.
Oh, and I bought my Philharmonic ticket!! Second tier box rear. Drinky-drinks before/after/both?
Face life with a little guts and lots of *glitter*
I think Emcee should tell the story but it was so fantastic. I am SO glad I went. Emcee and I were joking about how you can worry for ages about spending $20 on some random thing and then something like this comes along and you're just like "take my credit card, take it!!"
Honestly, it's one of those things about which I don't have very much to say. Not that the experience of it all wasn't worth a thousand or a million words, but I'm still in complete awe of it, and just don't know how to describe those two hours other than complete ecstasy. Even Raúl aside, no disrespect to him at all. But even if he hadn't been there, it would have been one of my favorite theater experiences. John Doyle hosted, Mary-Mitchell Campbell musical directed. There was a lot of Company love, which just made me melt. Pamela Myers did Another Hundred People and then You Could Drive a Person Crazy with Donna McKechnie. I was freaking out; THAT was something I never thought I'd see. Barbara did The Ladies Who Lunch. Heather did (Not) Getting Married Today, all three parts by herself. And when Raul sang Being Alive, I just didn't know what to do with myself. When the show closed, I thought that was something I would never see again. To say it was good to see a little bit of the show again would be a gross understatement.
The whole thing was just totally, totally unreal, and I'm lucky to have been there.
Raúl is looking very fit and trim. He must have lost a good deal of weight, because his clothes aren't even fitting right (look at the sleeves on the jacket).
I honestly like, don't even remember. bestinshow says I was really composed on the outside, but I was freaking out on the inside. I do remember we talked a little bit about the PBS DVD. He was so kind and gracious and lovely. I just... it was such an honor to meet him.
Doyle was SO nice to Emcee. He was working the line of autograph hunters but he really took time to talk to Emcee when she introduced herself. He said he hadn't seen the DVD yet.
After three years of hoping for that, I'm really enjoying the use of the phrase "the time I met John Doyle." To be able to meet someone who has literally changed your life is so gratifying. That's not really something I throw around lightly, the idea of something or other changing my life, but his work really, no exaggeration, has. On so many levels.
You guys are killing me. I'm on a crappy computer in the lab at school and I can't grab these photos until later. That sounds like an incredible evening of entertainment and I wish like hell I could have seen it for myself.
Now, mother always said that whenever you hear a strange, frightening, and potentially life-threatening ghostly chant coming from the dark woods that there's one thing that you should do: Not wake the others and go investigate it alone...
I think my favorite part of the night was Angela singing "The Worst Pies in London." She sounded brilliant and it was thrilling getting to hear her sing something from Sweeney live. Last night was basically a night of, "Wow, I never thought I'd live to see that!"
'Being Alive' really destroyed me. He sounded amazing too (and looked really gorgeous). So happy I was there to experience it all.
