Oh and Qdoba totally rocks. They are however, going through some stuff right now and about a third of all Qdoba stores are being closed. Pity.

They may not be plumping chickens but they're grabbing wallets (more profit for less product).

Suddenly, their portions shrank by almost half, but their prices stayed the same. That was the first of many reasons not to eat there.

Only they weren't so very much. Still, the food was good until they decided to half their portions and raise their prices.

Yes, I do not mind smaller portions. I mind smaller portions packaged with a larger price and with a way of serving it intended to tell the customer "just be glad we are giving you as much as you are and watch us make sure we dont give you any extra by accident."
Yes.. I was very upset that Qdoba closed their Manhattan locations. If I had to choose between the two, Id always choose Qdoba, with the wider selection, greater variety of toppings and a pretty fair rewards program for return customers.

I haven't had that problem at the one down the street from me in NJ, but I was shocked when I had Chipoltle in NYC recently. What happened? The portions really are smaller than they used to be. They didn't even fill my taco shells by the time they got to lettuce and cheese. At my local one, I actually get fewer toppings so I can eat them without a fork.

I just begain noticing the smaller portions at the Chipolte here in Brooklyn Heights. It is still a lot of food (I cannot finish a burrito) but there is less chicken and toppings.

The portions aren't huge at my Jersey location, but a burrito comes out to $7.50 including tax. I don't mind paying that. I'd be pissed if I were paying $10+ for that amount of food.

In the city, I pay $11 flat for three crispy barbacoa tacos and a small fountain drink. It wasn't all THAT long ago where I would pay $9.25 for FOUR crispy barbacoa tacos with healthier portions each and a small soda.

I admit that I do enjoy Chipotle's food. However, one thing that that I have noticed is that my usual order of a burrito, chips and a small drink comes to around ten bucks. This is at my local Chipotle in my town on Long Island. That price does seem fair to me considering all the food I'm getting. However, I do take issue with the fact that it does cost me a couple of bucks more to get the same exact meal when I am at one of their Manhattan locations.

But my experience is Manhattan prices are always inflated in chain restaurants. And that's going back 30 years or more. They would have to be in order to pay their inflated rents.

^ Fair point, but it does beg comparison to Steak-n-Shake, which has alocation right next door to letterman and price same as at their nidwest and southern locations - $5.45 for a cheeseburgr, fries and well sized beverage.

Yeah, the NYC mark-up is definitely a thing for most chain restaurants and stores. Higher taxes, higher rents. I have never eaten at the Steak-N-Shake in NYC--nor do I plan too--but I can't imagine their prices are exactly the same on all items as they are at a Midwest location.

I am prone to stopping in there for a milkshake or a $1 iced tea on my way to and from the subway.
All of my friends who are familiar with the chain comment on the fact that the prices in NYC are not marked up and how amazed they are to be able to get a Steak-n-Shake meal that tastes like home for the same price as at home.

Steak and Shake is awesome- Burgers that taste like a REAL home-grille burgers used to taste, with fries for $4. And a $1 Iced tea. Nice old-fashioned chili and milkshakes too.

And I don't mean to harp but Mexican food should NOT be this expensive. Chicago is crawling with corner tacquerias that offer huge, delicious burritos for $5. And if you order chips you get a BIG basket full!

I've been to the Manhattan Steak-N-Shake twice. Good value, good food, but I believe they have a limited menu.

Yes, it's the first Steak-n-Shake Signature, which is a new business model with a reduced menu and reduced footprint, designed for in and out traffic. Seating is fairly limited, so impossible to stay at a peak hour sometimes, but yes. It is RIGHT NEXT TO Letterman.

Please be more specific. I've been to numerous tacquerias in Chicago and they've all been horrible. Tasted like the tacos were stuffed with overcooked Alpo. Regardless, if you like Chipotle, it doesn't mean you should check out corner tacquerias as they are completely different flavors and often, different ingredients. Then there are the hipster neo-taco joints and taco trucks specializing in more gourmet tacos which cost about the same price as Chipotle for half the food. I tried Big Star and they were okay, but I didn't get the hype. Flaco's Tacos tasted a little better, but were still pricey for the portion size.
Had Chipotle for lunch in the Loop in Chicago today. I guess the portion size problems are more site specific. My one burrito bowl was enough for two meals. I usually order the crispy tacos and they are always overstuffed to the point where I cannot pick them up easily. I honestly only go there for the carnitas and the guacamole.

I lived near Irving and Ashland- there was a tacqueria on that corner that offered a "deluxe" burrito, steak or chicken with your choice of fillings (lettuce, onion, tomato, sour cream, cheese) for $4.95. There was a place further down Irving (near Sheridan) that was awesome too but their burrito was $5.50 (It was a sit-down place).
Tucked under the El track on Sheridan is the real gem- they have a gyro spit loaded with sliced pork, spicy sauce and pineapple that they slice off crispy hunks of to make your "Burrito al pastor" Man, those were transcendental.
If you're up for a walk, There is a full-service place on Montrose & Paulina that makes an awesome burrito- but I almost always get the guacamole tostado. I hear that my favorite 24-hour tacqueria, up on Lawrence and Paulina just closed
. They used to make awesome enchiladas for $5. When I lived on Paulina north of Montrose, it was great to get off the bus there after a night out and get a $4.50 burrito. Mmmmmm! Breakfast of champions!
