Does anyone else appreciate this movie? It is one of the most effective thrillers I have ever seen, and consistently gives me nightmares.

Thoughts? Anyone?

Definetly one of my favorites.

Incredible movie, not a weak person in the cast.

I agree. In fact, I believe that Damon, Paltrow, and Law all did their best work here.

Has a stage adapt. ever been talked about?

I adore this film. What better way for Matt Damon to prove he can act? And Cate Blanchett is so wonderful in this. The scene where he plays her off against Gwyneth and Jack Davenport is just incredible. The way she says "No Peter, don't get up" as she's leaving breaks my heart.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

popcultureboy-

I love that moment. It's so subtle, yet it registers perfectly. I also love the scene when Marge approaches Tom's door. "Dickie, I won't count on you anymore. Whatever it is you've done, you've broken my heart. That's one thing I know you're guilty of. And I don't know why, I just don't know why."

And I just don't know why Minghella didn't win the Adapted Screenplay award over John Irving. Grrr...

Wasn't that the same year that Michael "can't act for toffee" Caine won over Jude Law too?

I saw this movie such a long time ago, and I don't remember one bit of it except thinking that everyone in the cast was so beautiful...

I really need to see it again.

Yes. I still don't know what that one was all about. I also think that Damon should have had a nomination.

Wonderful movie! Love it, love it, love it! It has a great story and a strong cast all around - chock full of terrific actors - Law, Damon, Paltrow, Blanchett, Hoffmann. TTMR is a favorite in my collection. Updated On: 1/26/05 at 12:49 PM

I loathed this movie. It was like the whole time I was watching it I was like, oh, I love it, and then when it was done, I realized, if you take out the beautiful sceneery, the movie blows. It was boring, over acted, and Jude Law was the only good part. I guess Phillip Seymour Hoffman was as well...

I beg to differ. The scenery only added to it. Boring? This is one of the more intense and suspenseful films I have ever seen. Over-acted? By who?

I agree Damon deserved a nomination. I was not so impressed by Paltrow - almost anyone could have played that part. I preferred Blanchett.

I still can't believe Damon wasn't nominated for this, but there we are. As for Gwyneth, the character of Marge is tricky and I think she did well with it, especially when she flips at the end and attacks Tom, yelling "I know it was you, I know it was you." I would have liked Philip Seymour Hoffman to get some kind of recognition for his portrayal of Freddie. He's amazing in it.

Jon-

It's funny that you say that, because the reason I was impressed with Paltrow's performance WAS because anybody could have done it. It was a thankless part: wronged girlfriend who lingers in the background. Paltrow took it and made her feel like more than that. I thought her performance was charming, relatable and, in its final moments, truly heartbreaking. The film wouldn't have worked as well if we couldn't sympathize with Marge, and I actually felt really sorry for her. Updated On: 1/26/05 at 02:05 PM

(SPOILER!)

Some things to ponder: Did Tom kill Meredith? Whatever happened to Marge, in the long run? Do you think Tom will get caught?

I don't think he killed Meredith. He was forced into killing Peter because of her though, so he may have gone after her to revenge himself. Who knows? There's many other books by Patricia Highsmith in the Ripley series, so I don't think he ever gets caught.

I haven't seen this movie in years. I have it on VHS. Oy, those were the days...

But I remember loving Paltrow and Law in the film. I remember everyone saying that Jude was going to be the next big stud in Hollywood, and I said "No way." Perhaps now's a good time to take my foot out of my mouth.

Look how many movies that has been released in the past four or five months. Alfie, Aviator, Closer, just to name a few.
