The Ten Worst People on the Subway

They forgot to mention the men who feel the need to sit with their legs so wide open that nobody can sit next to them. I get that you have balls and need them to breathe, but close your f*cking legs so that somebody can sit next to you!

^ Oh, I don't let that keep me from sitting next to them at all. I just sit, and spread my legs the same way they do crashing right into their leg. They get the hint very quickly.

Me to, and I also ask people to make room who try to sit in that midway point of the bench in order to give the impression that there is only room for two people instead of three or think that someone won't have the audacity to say anything to them.

bwayluvsong-I agree. Last year, I was injured and in a cast (it was a hard walking one, but a cast). I tried to jockey my way in between two men who had their legs fully spread and was forced to stand (now, never mind neither guy offered me the seat).

I truly also despise people who take up more than their fair share of the seats on a crowded train. Your bags are not entitled to space that I could be sitting in! (When the train isn't crowded, I don't care-but during rush hour, you bet!)

The two most annoying types for me on the DC-area metrorail are the buskers often playing out of tune instruments and the evangelists who hop from train car to train car spreading the gospel of their Lord and Saviour What's-His-Name. On more than one occasion I've threatened to pull the alarm if they didn't knock it off or exit at the next stop.

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

I hate these young women who plop down on one seat, place their bag on another seat, sit on slant with their legs crossed, and place their coffee behind them on another seat. I watch people get on and no one says anything to these bitches.

And please add the incense peddler to the list of annoying people on the subway. That crap stinks up the whole train car in a matter of seconds.

I hate when people block the doors of people exiting. I always stand to the side or a few feet away from the door to see if anyone is exiting first, but I always have those other people who burst right through without looking.

Ditto on the bags on seats. I had an experience once on the PATH train where it had rained a lot and the seats on 1 side of the car had small puddles of water in them, so everyone was sitting on the other side of a pretty empty car. I almost sat down in one of the wet seats and some guy warned me of that. Of course he and other people had bags on the empty seats next to them and never offered to let me sit there, knowing the other side was wet.

You know, it's funny. I almost always never sit. I'm the one always standing. So I cannot relate at all.. But I do get frustrated with the ones who stand at the door for each stop and NEVER move to the side. They are so clueless.

The author of this list didn't even try.

#1 - stop being a wussy, say "excuse me" and sit your lazy ass down

#5 - people do this because of #3

#6 - no everyone is not getting off and that's why people choose to stand by the door

I would add the people who can't control their body weight. Your sitting in a crowded seat, the train is coming into the station and the fat ass next to you allows 100 pounds of their body weight to lean against you. Just because the train is going in a certain direction doesn't mean you have to allow your body to go in that direction.

Oh, here's another one that I hate. There is clearly not enough room between you and the next person for anyone to sit. Yet someone (it's usually the same exact type) squeezes themself in anyway, You are now being so intimate with a stranger that you feel every breath they take. I usually just get up and stand when this happens.

Another one that I hate is parents with small children on the subway late at night. Why do you have your 3 year old on the subway at 11:30 at night? It's obvious they should have been in bed hours ago.

One of the commenters went ballistic over someone eating spaghettios cold, from the can.

How else do you eat them?

If I see that there are seats open and I know I'll be riding for awhile, I usually will sit. Standing doesn't bother me, but if I can sit, I do. I definitely would give a seat up for someone who needs it more than I do though.

I initially thought this was a Gawker piece a couple years ago called 10 Subway Horror Stories that still haunts me to this very day.

Loud talkers bother me quite a bit. I appreciate when train cars have a near library atmosphere of low speaking voices and limited eye-contact with anyone else. If we are in a crowded car and practically sardines, strangers don't want to hear your drama.

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

I saw a new one today. I was on the 3 heading uptown and it was pretty packed. So when the doors opened some guy who was standing in front of them not only didn't move to let people get out, but decided that THAT was when he needed to move into the middle of the car, so as everyone is trying to get off he's moving upstream against them. I would have punched him in the d*ck if I was near enough, especially since he was complaining about people hitting him with their "damn giant bags" as they tried to get off the train.

#8. I try to be kind and polite everywhere I go. I really do. But when someone pulls #8, I lose it. I have a wide, colorful vocabulary and those #8s walk away learning a lesson about subway etiquette and rhetoric.

Another pet peeve that's kind of the opposite of my other one is when people get up for children or when parents scowl at you for not giving their kid a seat. If anyone should be taught to stand up on the subway and give their seats to their elders, it's the kids.

the people who get off a train and then stop dead right in front of the door so they can look around to see which way the exit is while you're trying to get off behind them. These are the same people who do this when they get off escalators, elevators, revolving doors, etc. Keep it moving, people!
