Are they soliciting donations? That is policed pretty well in Chicago. We used to have the stinky burn man. (I think he died.)

Oh yeah, they walk around with a cup afterwards.

How about the ones who know they have no talent, but get on the train and sing, or play an instrument then ask for money? I feel sorry for those ones.

"Kad, during one of my most recent visits, one of these "acrobats" smacked his head right into one of the poles."

I wish I could've seen that.

The offering a seat thing is so tricky, for just the reason Jane mentioned. I once saw a clearly quite elderly woman go off on some guy who offered her his seat. And I'm terrified I'm going to offer a seat to a "pregnant" lady who turns out to be an offended overweight person.

That happened to my friend while we were on the subway. She's not even overweight, just curvy.

Oh, and get this! I once saw a quite elderly, very richly dressed (jewelry, fur, etc.) white lady get on the train, walk past a good half dozen seated riders to ask the black man next to me if he'd mind giving her his seat. She was very polite, but it was also very clear that she ignored the seated white riders--male and female, young and old--she'd passed.

The poor guy, who looked like some sort of messenger (he had several larged carry bags), said "Of course," and started struggling to get up. I said "Please take mine," and she did. But Jesus!

Oh, and this was last year, btw. Not, you know, 1964.

It's worth reminiscing about this gem of an SNL sketch, with the late great Phil Hartman.
SNL: NYC Subway
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Reg, that reminds me of something that I'm sure I've shared here before. A few years ago I was on the train and a man and woman (mid 20's probably and both black) came on and walked over to me. The guy said "My girl wants to sit". I just kind of looked at him like "HUH?" then she (with a huge attitude says) "I am a BLACK. WOMAN. I WANT TO SIT." I just said "No hablo ingles" and put my earphones back in.

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

Last Wednesday when it was pouring I came across a girl standing on the subway stairs taking a selfie with the rain and scores of very soaked, very irritated commuters behind her.
I know you. I know you. I know you.

I was on the way home one time with my gym bag and two salmon filets in another bag. At Atlantic Avenue someone got up. The 20 something woman next to me asked if I'd like to sit. I said to her "Go sit" and she said "But you have bags, Sir."
I said "It's a salmon filet, you can sit' and she did.

While getting on a bus, I can't stand the people who don't have their fare ready. They hold up the whole line because they have to first put down their cell phone, then dig for their wallet, then pluck out their card from the wallet, then they hold everyone up while they put their card and wallet away.

^ That reminds me of people at Port Authority sometimes. You are supposed to buy your tickets if leaving there from a vending machine or a ticket window before boarding. It makes perfect sense to me. But, I had a woman in front of me one time with like 5 or 6 kids and she didn't do that and was holding up the line.

I really cannot stand the mariachi band (I haven't seen them much lately). I typically put my headset on when I'm on the train, but the freaking mariachi band is very loud and drowns them out.

I also must say I hate the break dancers-they literally evicted me from my seat last fall when I was injured so they could disrupt my morning commute. Not good.

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

This morning's commute prompted one: big groups that park themselves at the end of the stairs. We have FOUR BLOCKS OF UNDERGROUND SPACE TO HANG OUT IN. Get away from the stairs so we can all come join you!

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

I was so nervous on the train worrying that there was a rogue BWWer on the train judging me!
#67

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

That usually means it's a large group of out-of-town students or, even worse, a large group of clueless tourists from Europe who have no regard for others. I shutter at even mentioning them.

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

What about the tourists who treat the subway like it's a theme park ride?

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

Not just on the subway, but tourists who try to act like "New Yorkers" make me want to punch their kids, as well. The people who scream out "I'M WALKIN' HERE!" or act "tough" and treat my neighborhood like they're extras in a bad movie are the worst and I see that every day.

I also love when people shove to be at the head of a group getting on the subway, and then stop right inside the door with everyone else still behind them. THANKS, BUDDY. I TOTALLY DIDN'T WANT TO GET ON THE TRAIN.

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

For all of the complaints about tourists, though, I see this behavior just as much from locals and natives, especially when it comes to the rude and selfish behaviors (bags on the seats, spreading legs to take up seats, leaning on the poles, not moving to let people on or off, etc). And they seem to take pride in it, as if being rude is part of being a "real" New Yorker.

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

That was my morning today.

The two that happen to me most:

1. As I'm approaching the doors to board the train, someone decides they MUST board before me and just cut me off.

2. People get on the train and if they have to stand, will only stand closest to the doors and clog up the door area for everyone trying to get on or off the train while the rest of the standing room in the train is virtually empty.

The Ten Worst People on the Subway

Matt, that is my experience each and every time I take the subway. Everyone in NY has to be FIRST. Even walking down the street, the person behind me has to be in front of me and cuts me off so close that I step on the back of their shoes.

Man standing in the doorway - at least 300 lbs. Does not move a muscle for three stops - not letting anyone off or on. We squeeze through the 10 inches that his big fat belly allowed for ingress and egress.

I would like to add tourist with giant suitcases on their way to or from the airport during rush our to list of annoying people on the subway.
