I ended up finding a wind-up flashlight at a local hardware store. No batteries needed - you just wind it up to charge it. Walmart also had plenty of jar candles. I prefer the jars over the tapers because they're more stable and less likely to be knocked over by a curious pet.

I have wind-up & solar dual power no-batteries-needed lantern, flashlight and radio. I also stock a case of bottled water and plenty of no refrigeration, no prep needed foods for emergency. That way I don't have to go chasing these things when the inevitable snowstorm, blackout, whatever happens. I bought bread, crackers, pretzels, paper towels.
I should have one of those Red Cross preparedness backpacks ready to go with food, water, clothes, survival tools, important papers and emergency supplies but I don't yet. I have a lot of the prescribed contents at hand but not all.
I have a large beach bag ready, but I haven't filled it yet, contemplating what I'd need to take (and save) if I had to evacuate or leave. I'll probably make a list tomorrow. I paid my bills. Depending how strong the storm is and how near it gets I'll tape my windows.
I was always taught to fill the bathtub with water before a storm in case the power goes out and you need it to flush the toilets. Also to fill large kettles with extra water for drinking or washing.
Today I took some round 32-ounce plastic tubs saved from restaurant take-out and filled them with water and put them in the freezer to make large ice blocks to be prepared to help keep it cold if the power goes out.
This may incline Bloomberg to worry about the subways:
"1821: The only hurricane in modern times known to pass directly over parts of New York City pushed the tide up 13 feet in one hour and inundated wharves, causing the East River and the Hudson River to merge across lower Manhattan as far north as Canal Street. Deaths were limited since few lived there at the time."

New York Declares State Of Emergency For Hurricane Irene

"Did you hear? Hurricane Irene is going to slam into New York City like Lindsay Lohan slamming into the sidewalk in front of a nightclub."

This hysteria is driving me nuts! It is a media feeding frenzt to get people to tune in.

I know people have said that, but how does tape help with a hurricane blowing at your window?

It worked for family members in the past. I'm just going by their accounts.

Does anyone know what we should expect? Every news station is different. I'm expecting just some mild thunderstorms to some severe. One news station even said that tornadic off springs are possible because we're getting the edge of the storm where there is a lot of turbulence up in the atmosphere which will enhance the thunderstorms we are already expecting. Of course, we will most likely get a drizzle with some gusts of wind but kinda interesting to see how every different news outlet is different.
