The NY Times Metro twitter just tweeted that buses and subways are shutting down at noon tomorrow. I hope everyone is safe and prepared.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

One of my favorite singers tweeted that he's flying stateside tomorrow (he's in Ireland). I tweeted him back "Good luck with that".

I just got back from KMart. They only had the low end water and the high end water. What's a middle class person supposed to do?
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

You can always buy empty containers and fill them now. Stocking up on drinkable water does not mean only stockpiling bottled water.

Bite your tongue! Bottled water is the only water.

So a gas station near me hiked up it's prices to $6.30 a gallon for regular...I went in to make sure it was a joke...it wasn't...I went to the grocery store to get some stuff I missed...it was like thunderdome in there

That is HORRID, Violet. That has to be against some sort of consumer protection law.

Fingerlakes, it looks on you are on the very outside edge of the cone (or whatever you call it) so I have the feeling you won't get much....or at least less than us.
I'm near Albany and we're supposed to get 4-7 inches of rain with steady 30-40 mph winds and gusts up to 50 or 60. We have water, candles, my old battery-operated walkman for radio, just bought batteries and flashlights and we may stock up on some canned goods in case we lose power. The bf's stash of juice boxes may come into use too:)
My daughter is going to be home alone this weekend and can't leave because of the small menagerie of animals they have. They're on a lake but up the hill from it so I hope they don't take too much of a pounding.
Somehow we survive winter storms and their accompanying 30 mph wind gusts...

There is no way that you can convince me that that does not fall under price gouging, which is illegal and needs to be reported to somebody (wish I knew off the top of my head to whom).

A now a song for Irene...
The sun comes up,
I think about you.
The coffee cup,
I think about you.
I want you so,
It's like I'm losing my mind.
The morning ends,
I think about you.
I talk to friends,
I think about you.
And do they know?
It's like I'm losing my mind.

We are preparing for power ottages so I am filling the freezer with botled water to drink and keep the food cold. Never thought of it until they just suggested it on CNN. Of course it won't matter if the power is out past 2 days!

Has it really been that long since New York got a hurricane? I blame Hollywood for the panic. All those destruction movies all target Manhattan, and now everyone is imagining tidal waves wiping out everything below 14th street.

For some reason today I thought miniature Almond Joys and Snickers were essential and appropriate to buy to have on hand during the storm.
Mistake!

In the past hour I've received two recorded announcements from my town telling me that I must evacuate by 8 AM tomorrow. I've also received two e-mails advising the same thing. Sorry, folks. I ain't budgin'. First off, my home is a mile uphill from water. Second, if you've checked your weather forecasts, you'd realize that the storm will be downgraded by the time it reaches NY.

I believe the downgrade just refers to wind force; it doesn't say anything about the likelihood of flooding, which is why the evacuations are taking place.
Hope all's well tomorrow.

So I guess we should expect Dollypop on the news Monday, floating in the Atlantic Ocean on his mattress. Have fun!

The storm will almost certainly weaken- but it is indeed forecast to stay a hurricane as it starts up the New England coast.
Just because it may a category one when it brushes the NY area doesn't make it just a really bad thunderstorm. It will still pack devastating winds and massive rainfall. Because of all the rain we've been receiving lately, the ground is very saturated, making inland, not just coastal, flooding a major concern.
Because this is rather unprecedented, exercising caution is extremely wise. In the case of hurricanes, it's better to be the fool who overreacted and was proven wrong.

Now they are saying it will likely be a tropical storm by the time it gets to New York. But better safe than sorry.
