thanks... but I'm not really changing it to say that it wasn't the worst, but it wasn't the best... like everyone kept claiming it was.
A lot of movies this year were really over the top... like Sky Captain had 3 "big" movie stars, and it was really dumb.
RENThead, enLIGHist, Ozalot, Grobanite, Ringer, Pickwick LW, Wicked, Lost, American Dreams, West Wing
Lea S. Hugh J. Adam P. Idina M. Matt M. Taye D.
Sorry but I dug 'Scooby Doo 2.' It's a bright kids' flick and I thought it was goofy fun.
I mean, it's no 'Spy Kids,' sure but I had a good time.
The Incredibles??? As one of the worst??? Huh???
Wow, you guys saw some terrible movies...
Cheers!
I didn't particularly like The Phantom of the Opera but I don't think it was half as bas as some would make it out to be
While I am at it...a few things about The Village:
(If you can find it, read the review by Roger Ebert, it's the greatest movie review of all time.)
Someone explain to me this language they speak in...it's sort of a cross between old english and the way you might talk to a stupid and incapable two year old.
WHY would they talk like that if they are all "normal" people? If they all came from the "outside world" why would they adopt a retarted languange for no reason to speak in their little town? Why have silly vague names for everything? Why make red "the bad color"? Why designate any colors? Why does M Night Crapalyian insist on doing lame cameos in lame movies? He makes his films in such a cocky "look how great I am" way, and as a result they are getting progressively worse. This movie was sooo bad. Another problem...like the Truman Show (which I love): If the "elders" don't want anyone to know what else is out there, why do they tell them? i.e. why does Jim Carrey's char. know about Fiji?
Don't tell them, that's what they should do. When they ask, make up some lie about an ocean of deadly gases, a pit of lava, blah blah blah. Any of those lies are better than a giant monster...OH! Excuse me, I meant THOSE WE DO NOT SPEAK OF. My bad. F this movie, and so ends my rant of hate.
I hated Birth more...but don't get me started.
The Chronicles of Riddick
Like Battlefield Earth, but worse
And introducing Vin Diesel as a worse actor than Mrs. Spears

THE VILLAGE was my favorite film of the year. My least favorites were: SKY CAPTAIN... and PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT;
Spider-Man 2 was the only one I saw that I didn't like, except for the campy humor.
Most disappointing? A tie between Finding Neverland and Ray.
I agree that Ray was a dissappointment, but it was good.
I loved FN.
Feodor I hope those were the only three movies you saw.
DGrant, After The Sunset is not the Ethan Hawke/Julie Delpy movie you're thinking of (which I didn't see as I can't stand her or Richard Linklater, but that's another story). After The Sunset is the heinous Pierce Brosnan/Woody Harrelson/Salma Hayek jewel heist movie.
Someone posted SIDEWAYS as one of the worst? WOW.. I so disagree
Of the movies I actually saw, I would say The Grudge and The Forgotten.
I am seeing Sideways this weekend but from what I can tell it seems to be one of those films that is greeted with unanimous critical praise but, for the most part, public indifference.

Nope. Saw tons of films this year. Why?
And you still thought The Village was the best movie of the year? What were your 2nd and 3rd favs? (I respect all opinions, it's fine) I am just surprised that the Village conquers all is all.
Personally, I feel that The Village is one of the best films ever made. It is a story of humanity, kindness and love. really beautiful and wonderfully told.

Why not?
Obviously, the idea was that a group decided to leave behind modern society and start anew. They obviously used early American settlers as a model, and given their environment and resources, it makes sense. They had to come up with a set of rules and standards and they did it however they saw fit. It's like questioning why we speak the way we do now and why do we have our own symbology. They are identifiers that could have been created for a variety of reasons. Red is the color of blood. Usually, when blood is shed, it is not good. Hence, red is bad. They have obviously been there for a while and their language and methods evolved into a rhythm of speech that is normal for them. Do you apply these questions to every society that is unlike your own? As for Shyamalan's cameos, they are his films and he can do what he wishes. Hitchcock did the same. There's nothing wrong with it.
Here's my worst list (in no part. order):
Darkness (easily my #1 pick)
Christmas with the Kranks
Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid
Twisted
Soul Plane
White Chicks
Alien vs. Predator
Surviving Christmas
The Whole Ten Yards
I'm still stumped how people can call "Sky Captain..." one of the worst films of the year. The film was not about the story. Have you guys seen the films that I just mentioned? Watch those, and see what bad really is.
The film was not about the story
No, but the visuals sucked too. As did the performances. And the dialogue.
I respect your opinion, but I don't think I've ever disagreed with you more.
The language they "developed" and the "cultures" (jobs, colors, blah blah blah) they have adopted are simply script devices to fool the audience into thinking that these people are from a time before ours so we can have our so-called "twist" (Due to the success of 6th Sense, Shamalayan apparently feels that every movie needs one). The idea that these people want to detatch from a society they feel has gone awry is all great and all, but this movie was a joke. Pointing out that we have a tragically violent society is nothing new.
It's also mighty convenient that the built their village somewhere where they don't have car honking or roaring tugboats, not to mention air traffic. A helicopter sure could f-up their "world" something fierce.
Oh, and my advice to all you elphaba aliens out there, if water kills you, don't go to a planet that's made mostly of it.
Boy I can't wait for his next film.
not to mention air traffic. A helicopter sure could f-up their "world" something fierce.
Were you paying attention at the end, to M Night's cameo? He explained exactly why there was no air traffic over their village, which incidentally was in the middle of a nature reserve so that would also explain the lack of traffic.
"The film was not about the story."
Good thing because there wasn't one. As I said before, I was less impressed with the visuals in 'Sky Captain' than I was in the story. It was a technological chance that didn't work, it was also poorly acted, staged and shot and, thus, became easily the least involving and most banal afternoon I spent at the theater in some time.
I thought the film was fun, exciting, and very well-made. Paltrow was very charming in her role, and much more fun than I've ever seen her before. I'm not easily amused or impressed, but this film was in my top 10 for some time.
What about the effects didn't you like? That they were soft-edged and looked artificial? If so, that was the point.
