I am not sure if any of you are thinking of getting Wii's for the holiday.
If you are, they are in stock right now at Amazon.com.
I am not sure how long it will last.
Wii's
Thanks, You. I feel like I should buy one for my kids, but I don't know anything about the Wii products. Help!
Yours truly,
Clueless Mom

Okay, cows, tell me why it's worth $250 plus the cost of the games!
It is worth that price plus the cost of games because the Wii has you interact wit the games in a way no other system has before. For example, if your playing a game where you have to swing a sword instead of just pressing a button to swing it you actually swing the controller. It is very interactive and requires a lot more getting up and moving then any other video game system does.

Prepare to get addicted Miss Pennywise. The Wii is so much fun!
Clever, honey, I am not going to play it. My kids are.
And I'm not even sure of THAT because I still think this thing is going to wind up costing me 1,000 bucks when all is said and done. If they want "interactive," we can play the original version of TWISTER we have downstairs!
Famous last words, Miss P! I love the boxing game. It's very stress relieving.
Also, because I'm sure they won't stay in stock at Amazon for long, those of you who want to score a Wii should try wiialerts.com. They send you alerts when online vendors get them in stock. That's how I got my Wii!
My 81-year-old father played Wii bowling for the first time last weekend. He was quite proud that he bowled a 220.
So he's played Wii more than I have! At any rate, Miss P, he and my mom both quite enjoyed it, and neither one of them would ever play video games with me when I was a kid (at least not anything more advanced than our Atari). And my brother-in-law, who generally hates games altogether, also loved it.
Hmmm. It sounds like something that could help keep my house a little neater.

The Wii is amazing. Not only is it the most innovative and interactive video game system I've ever encountered, but it is the sole reason I bought a smaller size of jeans last Monday. Wii Fit is cheaper and more fun that any personal trainer I've ever found.
MP - I bought one for my wife for her birthday because she played it at her sisters house and got addicted to the tennis and bowling game... at first I watched her play for a few hours and i thought... sheesh... this thing is so lame... what a waste of money...
and then she told me to try the tennis one... and i did... and i got hooked! i kept swatting her away with the remote... miiinnneeee! it gets pretty addictive.
HOWEVER, id like to say that the main reason i like it is you can connect it to your wi-fi and download the old school NES and Super NES games. I downloaded Mario Bros 3 for NES and Super Mario World for Super NES and played them for the first time since I was a kid. I was hooked for days. I love the Wii for that capability!

My 60 year-old parents loooooove the Wii. They can't stop playing bowling on it.
I want one badly but can't afford it

I just have to add my own little voice of . . . well, a different perspective.
I've had very limited experience with this, at YWIW's house!, but I got the gist pretty quickly.
I still say if you want to go bowling, go to a bowling alley! If you want to play tennis, play tennis on a tennis court!
I tire of the propensity for people to seek 'virtual' experiences of things that they could ACTUALLY experience! Is it easier to do so from your living space? Perhaps. BUT, it denies the visceral, and the complete physical experience - and I'm adamently against that, on every level.
On a side note, NOTHING could replace a good LIVE game of Twister
That's what I'm talkin' about!!!

Honestly, I KNOW I'm in the extreme minority here, but I just hate that we look to technology to replace our very real physical experiences. I don't think there's any phrase in our current 'age' more egregious to me than 'virtual reality'.
What the Hell is wrong with actual reality?!?
It's kind of why I'm such a fan of the Arts & Crafts movement. It derived from a negative reaction to the mass production spawned by the industrial age.
I keep waiting for the movement that is generated in opposition to this 'virtual' existense promolgated by the Technological Age.
edited for typing frenzy errors.

Oh, I definitely agree, but at the same time, why not do both?
If you're tired from work, or it's a rainy day, and you just want to stay home. Why not just play virtual bowling or tennis or whatnot? At least that's the way my parents take it. Do they think it's in any way better or comparable to playing bowling surrounded by people, having greasy food, and actually holding a bowling ball? Not at all, but I do think it's a nice alternative yet not a replacement by any means.
I think you are particularly referring to people who just seek the virtual experiences and do consider them way superior or just as good as the "real thing" and in that case I completely side with you. But I don't think it's wrong to get these experiences and just take them for what they are, does that make sense?

Ray - it makes perfect sense. I think I've just encountered too many people who think this IS better precisely because they don't have to deal with all those 'messy' parameters. It's just so much better to have the 'experience' within the confines of my own space, that I control, without threat or interuption from 'them'.
I understand the potential benefits, I just don't think it's enough to elevate it above actual experience.
Just my thoughts, most of this has already been expressed by other people:
I don't think I could experience the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in real life. While I can understand your arguments against Wii Sports in comparison to the real thing, don't forget that this is a video game console that has the power to play other games as well. Experiencing things in real life is great, yes, but the Wii is also an experience; in fact part of what makes the Wii so great is in the experience factor.
There have been bowling games in the past where you just press a button, then they moved up to the actual rolling ball on the arcade games, and now you can mimic the movements with the Wii. You make the Wii sound like you are just sitting on a couch pressing buttons, when you are at least engaged to get up and play. And yes, it is absolutely not the real thing, but I would venture to call it a valid alternative when the real thing is not available.

"I would venture to call it a valid alternative when the real thing is not available."
I'll buy that - but I have to wonder how many people just decide this is so easy, why bother to look for the valid alternative.
And, if I gave the impression of thinking that people are just sitting on a couch pressing buttons, that wasn't my intention. I've had a limited experience with Wii, so I know that it does involve some amount of physical interaction.
"I have to wonder how many people just decide this is so easy, why bother to look for the valid alternative."
Oh I am sure plenty of people forget what happens outside their living rooms when they are playing the Wii. I wouldn't be surprised if years down the road there is a generation that will never have even heard of bowling alleys... which is pretty sad, because as much fun as the Wii is, there is so much experience you miss out on from real life. We probably aren't far from some external company packaging rented shoes and selling them to people to supplement bowling on Wii.
And I only added other games because I fear many people with limited experiences with a Wii might only have gone so far as Wii Sports. There are plenty of great games for Wii that, for those who value gaming, you really could not imagine having played any other way. I threw Zelda out as an example because I have played and beaten every Zelda game since the series came out, and I thought back and wondered how I could have done such a thing without being out of my seat controlling Link with as much of my body as possible.
