That's a shameful thing to say, Bob. You know nothing about their lives. You basically just called them "shiftless and lazy."
Walk a mile in the shoes of someone who is part of the "long-term unemployed" before you judge them like that. Because the odds are we'll ALL be among their ranks soon.

I am agreeing with both Namo and PJ today. Is there something in the air? Elegantly put, PJ. I too would agree that FishermanBob's characterization of the "long-term unemployed" is beyond offensive.

I was coming here to post a response to FishermanBob but PJ beat me to it.

Sorry, Bob, but I'm with PJ and, yes, Liza on this one. I say that as someone who, still in my early 30s, has gone through three difficult layoffs - one of them with a 1+ year of unemployment. In my case, I never gave up looking and eventually found work. My dad also got laid off at age 60 and quickly found how subtle forms of age discrimination can keep an older person permanently locked out of the workforce. After 3 years and more than 30 interviews, he gave up and cashed out his retirement savings.

It will be exciting if Biden enters the race. Hillary could use a little competition!

I keep hearing how it's shaping up to be an exciting election!
Was that sarcasm Namo? A year ago, there was nobody running against Hilary, now we have PJ admitting she will lose the first primaries. Donald Trump is making a perfect ass out of the Republican Party, and only Rick "Oops" Perry is out of the field of 17 so far. Did CNN give the 10 million to the vets yet? How can you not love what Donald Trump is doing to the GOP?
I've sworn off political threads so carry on.

The hope and change that Bernie promises is so new and exciting!
Yes it is, name one candidate who has taken up the issue we're in class warfare.

I love how "feel the bern" is such a hip reference to the Jane Fonda Workout on VHS. Sanders is what's happenin', he's dynomite!

Wow guys. Quite a reaction and assumptions about what I was calling them. My main point was how to treat them statistically, not pass judgment on them as human beings. Perhaps I could have used words other than doesn't want to work which you've all reacted to. The point remains a discouraged worker statistically is considered someone who doesn't make an effort to look because he or she believes there are none out there after making that effort. If there are jobs now available and they are aware of that and the individual still makes no effort to look, there may be legitimate reasons for that but is it still appropriate to classify them as discouraged statistically? The topic of all the reasons why someone may not look for a job even if it appears some are available is a much longer and more complex discussion.

Also, if it's one thing the Republicans taught us when there really were no new jobs under W, it's that pointing out the numbers of people who have just given up looking for work is a topic to just ignore.
THEY'RE ALL THE SAME, right?

Someone needs to teach Bob how to differentiate what he's quoting from what he's saying, Maybe Bernie can. Bernie can do ANYTHING

I thought it was super post modern.

Does anyone else find the phrase "Feel the Burn" a little creepy?

But Bernie invented income inequality and the cure for income inequality!

The Bern is really connecting with the young people. They love to feel him!
Waiting for PRS to respond to and tell me about all the candidates for president with the issues Sanders has been talking about. Or will he/she answer the same ridiculous way?

There's plenty!. But sadly not Hillary Clinton. Like Elizabeth Warren said, Wall Street is her main constituency.

There's a lot of research out there that indicates employers will not hire the long term unemployed. So it's not so much about not wanting to look for work as it is about being shut out of the job market.
They’re hiring, but not for the long-term unemployed.
