CATS - your dad's celebration won't be long-lived. re: the prop 8 supreme court decision moment by moment countdown thread

Taz - I think the loopholes are there on purpose - leaves the door open for further challenges.

I hope everyone who objects to the ruling will be at some rally today. It's not enough to bitch about it online. And wear white!

And Obama will be totally neutral. He is a coward who ironically as our first [and last?] black president will treat the gay community like Rosa Parks.

Cats, I think you should give your dad a big tray of Ex-Lax brownies for him to celebrate with.

Here is footage of the protest in front of the California Supreme Court building- they blocked traffic all but immediately. I think you can hear one driver say "But I'm Gay- can i get through here?"

I'm in SF, work on Van Ness. Traffic seems to be moving normally up here, but I can't see down to City Hall.

Are they actually surprised by this?

I want those judges to explain to me how they can take rights away from one group of people and still leave the one that did get married alone?

So, my marriage is okay because I managed to get in before some deadline and everyone else is screwed?!

It's so nonsensical that some gays can remain married, but all others are prohibited.

Fundamentally, that is absurd.

As it was explained to me, laws cannot be enforced retro-actively. The already existing marriages can exist, but there can be no new ones until such time as the law forbidding them is struck down.

Fflag, Obama isn't totally neutral. He does not support same-sex marriage. I bet Barack Obama is a happy man today. He's just gotten more confirmation of his bigotry toward gays.

If Prop 8 had specifically included language invalidating the existing marriages, that likely would have been upheld as well. Since it didn't, the court took the opportunity to preserve the existing marriages. The court gave the most favorable ruling that we could have hoped for given the underlying legal precedents and the fact that California has a f**ed up system for amending its constitution. I understand people are angry, but in my opinion, it's a mistake to direct that anger at the court - their hands were tied due to California's strange system. And don't forget, this is the court that legalized gay marriage in California in the first place, and made it possible for even these 18,000 couples to get married.

"Oh yes, sorry, i should have clarified. The blood i want, is that of the bigots."

I'll probably get strung up for this but I don't want anyone to die or be seriously injured. Are they wrong? Yes. Are they stupid? Yes. Should they die for that? I don't think so.

In my opinion killing or hurting the bigots just brings the protestors down to their level. IMO, it's no different than a bigot beating and/or killing a gay. An eye for an eye just leaves everyone blind.

Would you gays rather have all the gays who got married be invalidated too?

I doubt Obama's a bigot. Rather, he's a shrewd politician who is going against his beliefs because he's afraid of losing his political clout.
