So basically everyone got nominated who has ever done a musical this year? Yipee.
How many nominees were there for distinguished performer??? They couldn't bring it down to a select few?
I may have missed it but did Nick Adams get nominated? I don't remember hearing his name.
Are you not familiar with the Drama League? They always have plenty of nominations.
Interesting to see a lack of THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS and Benjamin Walker for BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON.
for a minute there i thought i was getting a nomination too.
I was also wondering why Elf was nominated over Scottsboro, for example, but at the bottom it says that Scottsboro, Bloody Bloody and Brief Encounter were deemed ineligible this year because they were eligible last year.
^ Oh, that makes a lot of sense. So basically the only new Broadway musical not nominated was WOMEN ON THE VERGE.
After hearing everybody's raves for Ellen Barkin in The Normal Heart, I'm surprised that her name isn't in amongst the nominees.
I loved Jennifer Jason Leigh in "...Blue Leaves" and she wasn't nominated.

SHOCKED that Mackenzie Crook (Jerusalem), Ellen Barkin (The Normal Heart) and Elizabeth Rodriguez and Yul Vazquez (Motherfuc*er with the Hat) weren't nominated.
Since they don't break up categories it looks like it would be so hard to choose just one. If you were on the board who would be the one person you would pick?

Fiona Shaw.
Some of the omissions may be because by the Drama League rules, only two performers per production can be nominated. So taking Ellen Barkin, for example, it seems that Joe Mantello and John Benjamin Hickey edged her out for the two slots from that show.
It looks like we get the Outer Critics Circle awards nominations tomorrow. This week and next week are big awards weeks!
This is likely Mark Rylance's to lose.

And Wonderland and Baby It's You.

Well as another poster said, only two people per show can be nominated, so Ellen Barkin, Elizabeth Rodriguez, and Yul Vazquez were edged out by their costars. Mackenzie Crook, however, was a huge oversight. I am shocked he didn't get a nomination since Rylance was the only one nominated for Jerusalem.

Probably true, but depending on the Normal Heart reviews, Mantello could take it. Remember that these are mostly New York voters. Also, Brian Bedford has a pretty good shot since it's not split up into categories.

The subtitle in the article misnames them "The Drama Desk Awards".
they should just call this the "Drama League Recognition Ceremony" since they basically nominate EVERY single person & production the committee liked this season. Fluff.
These awards have been around for 77 years. Why are people suddenly shocked that there are so many nominees?
So happy for Charles Busch

Oh, don't look for the Outer Critics Circle Awards to help much to define the Tony chances: they usually throw a heap of nods toward shows that don't even make the Tony cut. Remember the YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN year?
ljay889-
personally speaking, I'm not so much surprised by the number of nominees as simply sick of the same old formulas for what/whom is honored, silly rules like only 2 people per show, and the basic political formulation & premise of how award organizations choose nominees & winners. Lots of political hogwash & popularity decisions involved whether people want to admit it or not.
FOR EXAMPLE:
why was nikka james not on that list with the other 2 newbies from BOM?
why was sherie rene scott excluded from the same show benanti was nominated for when she carried WOTV with such beautiful singing and nuanced acting?
is it because WOTV sucked? if so, then why was benanti even nominated? for a greatly written role?
what about the amazing work that Yul Vasquez did in MFer?
fluff
The Outer Critics Circle nominations will provide absolutely no clues about the Tony race. As was already pointed out, they're more like the Outer Space awards. I say this every year, but let's remember, Corine is one of their voters. That alone should give you a clue as to their credibility.
