I'm just wondering what everyone else makes of Lauren Ward and Lesli Margherita's omission from featured? I thought, at least for the Tony, that one of the two of them was all but a lock. I also felt the same about Victoria Clark.
Is it silly to read into their chances tomorrow based on their not being nominated today? Those three surprised me. I was especially hoping to see Margherita and Clark nominated.

I guess I could see that. My best guess at the Tonys for Featured Actress right now is Andrea Martin, Jessie Mueller, Lauren Ward, Keala Settle, and either Annaleigh Ashford or Rachel Bay Jones, though it does make me sad that Margherita will go unrecognized as I just loved her.

The Porter/Carvel situation is very like the LuPone/Joanna Gleason situation of the '80s... Gleason won the DD for featured actress for Into the Woods, LuPone won the leading actress gong for Anything Goes... then both were placed in leading for the Tony, and Gleason came out triumphant. Could Carvel be the Gleason here?
I only hope Porter says Carvel looked like the Tin Man in Billy Porter: A Memoir.

The Drama Desks are usually strange. Remember 2009 when 9 to 5 led the DD's with 14 nominations but only got 4 at the tony's? They beat their own drum.
Kelly2, I'm pretty sure the Ashford is a lock for the tony nom. I think the category will be: Martin, Ashford, Settle, (One of the Drood girls- i wouldn't count out Chita although would love to see Mueller take it), and (One of the Pippin girls- either D'amboise or Bay Jones)
Looks to be shaping out to be an interesting year! Congrats to Carmello on her DD nod, hopefully that will carry over to the tonys.
Does anyone else feel performance wise this year is really strong? What i mean is the shows are so so but all the performances are incredibly done this year?

Andrea Martin-Pippin
Annaleigh Ford-Kinky Boots
Keala Settle-Hands on a Hardbody
Chita Rivera/Jessies Muiller-The Mystery of Edwin Drood (their only gonna nominate one of them even though they both deserve to be nominate)
The final spot is a 5 way race betweed Lauren Ward-Matilda, Rachel Bay Jones-Pippin, Teal Wicks-Jekyll and Hyde, Victoria Clark-Cinderella, and Ann Harada-Cinderella.

I can see that, I guess I just was underestimating the appeal of Ashford's performance. I love her and I loved her in the show, but it didn't feel like a Tony-worthy performance to me, I was much more impressed by Lauren Ward and even Victoria Clark.
As far as Chita Rivera/Jessie Mueller, I agree it will be one of them, and I could definitely see the Tony committee choosing to recognize Chita over Jessie given her career and her name value. Based purely on the performances in the show, I would say Jessie Mueller should take it, but we all know there are many other factors that go into this.

I'm predicting Andrea Martin, Rachel Bay Jones, Annaleigh Ashford, Keala Settle, and Lauren Ward with Jessie Mueller or Victoria Clark as the possible spoiler in the final position. As much as I love her, Mueller's show closing a few months ago puts her at a disadvantage.

I would agree with you that it puts her at a disadvantage with the voters. I don't necessarily think it's a huge handicap with the nominators. Let us remember Keala Settle's show is also closed, and ran for a much shorter time. And also of course things like The Scottsboro Boys and the amazing Julie White being remembered despite being long-since gone by the time nominations rolled around.
I don't actually feel that sure that Mueller will be nominated, but I would be surprised if the reason she is passed over is for both Bay Jones and Martin. I would much rather see Lesli Margherita, Victoria Clark, or even Katie Finneran take the slot over Rachel Bay Jones.

They strike me as the theatre equivalent of the Golden Globes. They kind of just do their own thing and it tends to have little bearing on anyone elses nominations.

I don't get all the attention for Settle, she had one song that seemed better than it was because of staging and the limitations of the rest of the score. She's a good singer but she had nothing to act.
And Amanda Green getting a nom here for LYRICS?
That's rdiculous.
And I agree Martin Moran was robbed.

There was also the year they nominated LOVEMUSIK for a bunch of awards and we all know how much that meant for the Tonys. People like to pretend theatre awards are similar to film awards where the precursors are really good indicators of the Oscar nominees and winners. Theatre awards don't work that way, we should just find individual value in these smaller awards rather than value them in terms of whether they correctly predict the Tonys or not.
How neat would it have been to see Murphy and Kuhn nominated in the same category. It seems ridiculous that they left Kuhn out, but it looks like the category was really competitive.
