These are the most bizarre nominations I've seen in awhile. Why were Melissa Errico and Ryan Silverman (who does deserve his nod) nominated, but Judy Kuhn wasn't? (I would've nominated her. She was excellent.)
Yay for Donna Murphy in Into the Woods. (I bet they wish they'd transferred now-she'd have had a shot at best actress in a musical this year.)

Congrats Jessie Mueller and everyone from the cast of Drood on their well deserved nominations! So happy to see this show getting the appropriate recognition now.

Sounds like Stephanie J. Block has it in her bag.

I expect tomorrow's nominations to be more similar to the OCC's than these.

Congrats to HARDBODY!!! That is the recognition is deserved. Hopefully all this love will get the cast recording out sooner.
Surprised by the love for FALLING which was much better than I expected.
Interesting choices for outstanding musicals. KINKY and MOTOWN noticeably missing. Not that I'm complaining.

Wow I didn't even realize that Motown was completely shut out! I expected at least an Orchestrations nomination.

I'm thrilled with the Hardbody love. This group certainly wasn't taken with Kinky Boots or Motown. More praise for A Christmas Story and Bring It On than I thought too.
I'm seeing The Great Comet of 1812 or whatever it's called on Wednesday and can't wait now!

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

So happy to see the “Drood” team so heavily recognized. Also happy to see the creatives of “Bring it On” not forgotten!
Wish "Hardbody" could have held on until awards season to see if that was able to give them a bump.

I'm thrilled with these nominations which can only mean that a great deal of outrage seems likely to be on the way.
The acting categories are just so incredibly spot on, and I love that this group actually remembers shows long term and is willing to recognize the biggest and the smallest shows.

Patina not in there as well.... right?

I think the Drama Desks Award's placement of Bertie Carvel just gave Billy Porter the Tony.
I also think Patina's lack of a nomination just leveled the playing field between her and Laura Osnes.

I don't think who gets nominated or wins the Drama Desk has any bearing on who gets nominated for or wins a Tony.

I'm sorry, no nomination for Rob McClure when they have 7 nominees???!! Absolutely ridiculous.

bdn- You're thought process literally makes no sense. Lauper wasn't nominated, yet you think these nominations have increased her chances of winning a Tony? How does that equation work out? Minchin wasn't nominated for music, no, but he was nominated for lyrics. That's one nomination more than Lauper. How does that increase her chances and decrease his? If anything, it makes it more likely for Christmas Story or Hardbody to snag a Tony for Best Score (not that I think it will actually happen).

Yes but people are lazy. Since their voting pools overlap to a degree voters are likely to vote for the same nominee in each (Voting across the board), thus not being nominated causes your chances of winning awards you are nominated for to lessen.

Hmm. Just realized the one absence that does bother me: no Kristine Nielsen for Vanya and Sonia...
Still, with nods for Shuler Hensley, Reed Birney, Maria Dizzia, Keala Settle, Lindsay Mendez, Donna Murphy, Tony Shahloub, Chuck Cooper, Maryann Plunkett, Laila Robins...so many of NY theater's best and most undersung actors are represented. I'll take it.

Drood may have gotten heavily recognized, but they left out Scott Ellis for Director.

I have said this in another thread, but I am also thrilled for Hands on a Hardbody leading the nominations, that show should've ran longer despite me never seeing it. I would've loved to have the chance to see it.

Granted Minchin's lyrics are better than his music, but it does seem weird that he was nominated for lyrics and not music.
....but the world goes 'round

Great. Again, how does that effect Lauper positively? She can't win a Drama Desk, so Tony voters can't say "Well who won the DD? Lauper? Great, vote for her."
Here's a scenario: Say LaChiusa wins Best Music for Giant and Minchin wins Lyrics for Matilda. Giant can't be nominated for a Tony Award, so would the Tony voters still in their laziness vote for Lauper? Or, say that Byrne and Flatboy Slim win Music and Malloy wins Lyrics. If the Tony voters are "lazy", wouldn't they just look at who was nominated for a DD or OCC (or which show has the most Tony noms) ?
I get that you liked KInky Boots, so just say that you think Lauper deserved it more than Minchin. Saying that these nominations help her chances now doesn't make sense. To be perfectly honest, I don't think these nominations increase or decrease anyone's chances because, as Whizzer says, the DD doesn't effect how the Tony Nominating Committee votes.

Patina Miller's snub is a big surprise. It's also surprising to not see Victoria Clark on the list as well. I didn't expect Donna Murphy to get nominated for 'Into the Woods' even though she's incredibly talented. Anyway, I'm very happy for Stephanie J. Block, Andy Karl, Brian d'Arcy James, Andrea Martin, Vanessa Redgrave, Cicely Tyson, Tom Hanks, Nathan Lane, and Julia Murney.
