I find it hilarious that ppl here think Olivier awards mean anything for the success of the musical in America. Groundhog day had to beat out a revival of dream girls school of rock and something called 'the girls'. And I think those were the only musicals eligible for the award.
It's not like the show was up against deh or comet or come from away or war paint or Amelie or Anastasia..Need I go on? The substitutes on this side of the pond are just a bit different than over there.

I think the hate for Groundhog Day on this blog is really weird. Now that the tech stuff is worked out its an incredibly ingenious production. Frankly, I would be surprised if it DIDN'T get nominated! DEH, CFA and N&P being the other three. Just my guess....nothing more.

No need to be a scrooge. I've heard great things about The Girls and also I'm just excited that it gives Groundhog Day SOMETHING substantial to put on the marquee. Also, transfers form London having success in America after Oliver wins has had some positive correlation recently.

I'd guess that the voting was pretty evenly distributed in the Best Musical category and that Groundhog Day slipped into the lead almost by default.

YESSS ANDY AND GROUNDHOG DAY!! I just got to meet him yesterday and he was the sweetest. So excited for him and the show, it DEFINITELY deserves the recognition!

I have to wonder if the leads of HARRY POTTER are all leaving the show simultaneously in advance of coming here to New York with it.

I'd venture a guess that The Play That Goes Wrong got more attention than it might otherwise have because of the Olivier. It piqued my curiosity and likely that of others, and I'm glad for that.

As somebody else wrote, she's ineligible for Best Actress, though I'm personally hoping they'll bestow her with a Special Tony Award this year.

Virtually all the positive word of mouth for Curious Incident came from its London run. Yes, it was a best seller in the states, but it was an unconventional book and it might have been slow for audiences to warm to had it not been for the publicity it received through the Olivier awards.
The Olivier awards simply provide another way to market a Broadway Show. For a show like Groundhog Day, which is struggling to set itself apart for other shows in a crowded season, it CAN be important. For what it's worth, I get regular reports from friends in New York on some of the new shows (to help me plan my one trip to New York every year), and although they rarely agree on everything, the consensus is that they loved Groundhog Day, hated War Paint, and had mixed feelings about Amelie. Now, no one is going to put "Back Row's Friends Loved Groundhog Day!" on the marquee because no one cares, but "Olivier Award Winner - Best Musical" is as good as a pull quote from Brantley when it comes to selling tickets. It may or may not be enough to propel the show to commercial success on Broadway, but it is far from meaningless.

Really???
If there ever was a shoo-in, it is Ben Platt...said Hilary Clinton. I still don't think it will make a speck of a difference. And, if this board is an y indicator, maybe it'll get the fourth slot...and come i fourth place.

I wonder that, too, especially given Rowling's insistence over the years that these characters always be played by British actors. I imagine that's still her preference.

Yeah my bad on the Glenn Close thing. I had a major brain fart there. In my defense, the Sunset Blvd. win came before my obsession with Broadway really began. Still...I'm a moron ha
Thanks for the backup on the Olivier win/Broadway success correlation. It's the recent success of Matilda and Curious Incident I was most thinking about.
Also, Back Row made my point on the Olivier win better than I could. Yes, it's not the OMG headline that will send swarms into the theater but it should help at least a tiny bit which is better than nothing.

This is great for Andy Karl and Groundhog Day. It won't have anything to do with Tony wins because they'll lost to DEH, but it does give them a leg up for Tony noms. If the committee was on the bubble about it then this might give them a reason to nominate it without any reservations.

By the way did the Sheridan Smith Gate have anything to do with her not winning the Olivier? I actually do not blame her. Her dad died I have no idea how awful that must of felt. But they BOTH could of handled it better. Hopefully she will come over and reprise or will someone else do it?

Sheridan had strong competition anyway but I don't think all that negative publicity helped her, no.
