Note that "lack of options" is a conjecture made on this board and this board alone. None of us know what CBS producers are actually thinking, unless one of you are them. Let's keep the bs to a minimum please.

There almost seems to be a hesitancy about asking Colbert. Theres literally no one else funny and well known who loves Broadway who could host them. He would have been my first choice. Although Bette Midler is an inspired idea.

I would have to believe Colbert has been asked already, though it's weird he's not mentioned in the article, other than as offering an "assist" to Kroll and Mulaney.

I noted this on the other thread, but Colbert is already tapped to host the Emmys.

So? Neil Patrick Harris was able to host both the Tonys and the Emmys in the same year twice.

Plus, people who don't watch the Tonys would watch them for him. People seem to forget that CBS doesn't air the Tonys as a public service. They and their advertisers would like people to watch them, and, for that reason, some of the suggestions on this thread are pretty ridiculous. I LOVE the Tonys, but their viewership is notoriously low. Having a host that is known outside of the Broadway community is a way to make them more accessible to the general public.
As a New Yorker and Theatergoer...I still don't know who he is and never heard of him? Anyways, he won't be the host!

Perhaps, if Colbert did both he would have to take more time off from doing his show. While NPH didn't have a show.

God I would love Kroll and Mulaney. They did a great job doing the IFC Spirit Awards the day before the Oscars: Nick Kroll & John Mulaney's Opening Monologue at the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Surprised. Don't remember if anyone suggested him. But he's definitely a theater person and can be entertaining.
