The full list I believe. They did NOT like Hadestown, apparently. The Prom got five nominations, I believe. Tootsie with 11. Oklahoma! coming in at top with 12. 

This list really surprises me. Patrick Page has been systematically disregarded this season it seems. We'll have to see how the Tony nominations fall. And only one nomination for Gary, that wasn't even set design or costuming, I'm shocked. This seems to be a really unpredictable year for nominations.

Andre de Shields and Rachel Chavkin just got nominations so I guess Hadestown IS eligible? Not watching the live stream so I might've missed something...

Another Be More Chill Best Musical nomination!! So thrilled for them. Had definitely solidified my faith in an upcoming Tony Nom.

Whoops, I didn't see this before I commented. Still a surprising nominee list. I think they, like the rest of us, have been overwhelmed with the number of quality plays this season, which made for some odd decisions and people getting left out. Was Network not eligible either? I'm surprised Brian Cranston didn't get a nod.

Andre de Shields was not in the production off-Broadway (I believe), so it makes sense why he is eligible.

Kelli O'Hara snubbed again??

I assume that Patrick Page was ineligible since he was playing the same role Off-Broadway. (But the show itself changed enough to make Chavkin eligible, and de Shields wasn’t in it OB.) But that’s just an assumption.

Pretty shocked at Lead Actor in a Play, given how stacked that Broadway list is for the Tonys, that NONE of them got in!

Also shocked to see the lack of love for GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY. I thought Winningham would be in for sure.

Add me to the crew shocked about some of the play noms. Not saying the quality of the shows/actors nominated were poor as I haven't seen them, but that was a bit of a shock for sure. Especially lead actor in a play.

Per the blurb above the list:

"This year, when determining the eligibility of the Broadway productions of “Hadestown,” “Torch Song” and “Choir Boy,” all of which had recent off-Broadway runs in previous seasons, the Drama Desk nominating committee chose to only consider “those elements that constituted new work.”

Since most people seem to think Kelli O'Hara's performance in KMK was only "ok", I don't see how there is lots of surprise in her being left off the list.

Wow! These are wild! Some Initial impressions:

No nomination for Network OR Mockingbird in Best Play. I’m thrilled for Fairview!

Also very happy that the production of Henry VI that played in the fall. I loved it, but it seemed like it got very little recognition at the time!


And in one of the most stacked categories in recent Broadway (lead actor in a play) ALL nominations go to Off-Broadway! Amazing!

Happy for the brilliant Zainab Jah for getting so much awards recognition this season already. Also happy to see Sydney James Harcourt, Megan Hill, Ruth Wilson, and Hampton Fluker get in. I thought Hampton Fluker was a standout in All My Sons

He certainly was.  Assuming that if by "standout" you mean it stood out as one of the worst performances to  appear on any stage. Ever.

I think she's more than just ok. I think she's very good. I also think she's leagues better than Rebecca Naomi Jones.

I wonder if Hadestown was actually eligible in Best Musical but it didn't get enough votes? I understand Book, Score, Gray, and Page not being eligible, but it would be weird if it had been deemed ineligible for Musical but eligible for Director.

It's so stupid to separate Music from Lyrics. One can't be judged without the other. And it's odd that Music has 6 nominees and Lyrics have 5, with 4 overlapping and 3 solo noms (Taub & Sonnenblick for Music, Beguelin for Lyrics).

The Drama Desks always recognize a lot of Off-Bway shows, and it's nice to see so much good Off-Bway work on the lists this year.

Really wish I got to see Fairview. Since it won the Pulitzer, any chance this ever transfers to Broadway?

Fairview is returning in June, at Theatre for a new audience.

 

 

I already grabbed my ticket! Looking forward to seeing it!!

This is easily one of the more asinine things I've read on these boards. I thought he was phenomenal, but even if one disagrees, the worst performance ever on a stage? Laughable.

 

Overall I'm surprised TKAM and All My Sons were so overlooked. Very strange re Hadestown, I assume that Gray and Page simply were ineligible. Still the Oklahoma! love here is strong- 5 acting nominations, and I expect to see something similar next week.

HUGE congrats to Sydney James Harcourt. I didnt see GFNC but he was a fantastic Burr and GW in Hamilton.

I think this is a ridiculous statement. Just say you didn't enjoy the performance. Also, would love to see you do better.

Just so we're clear. Hadestown was not eligible for Best Musical because it had previously been nominated for it in its off-Broadway run. Only new elements of the show were eligible.

Part of me wonders if it was eligible for Best Revival and got shut out, or the producers didn't want to create some confusion for its Tony campaign. To be elligible for the Tony for Best Revival, a production of a new work must not of played in the New York City for 3 years after its closing. I am assuming the Drama Desks have a similar rule. Hadestown opened at NYTW a little under 3 years ago, but technically only 2 awards seasons ago as it was nominated in 2017 for Best New Musical and lighting design. Great Comet and Dear Evan Hansen had eligibility issues in 2017 which is likely why Hadestown snagged a nomination in the first place. Considering Hadestown was nominated in nearly all of the technical categories this year I don't see why producers didn't request the show be considered a revival since everything outside of the written words and the performances of Page and Gray are new. 

The fact that Page and Gray are both in very competitive categories and aren't eligible in any of the precursor awards does not bode well for their Tony chances, akin to to what happened to the supporting cast of Great Comet.
