She can't hit many of the low notes and she doesn't know all of the correct lyrics. I'm over her.
She should just do the porno and get it over with
It slays me to read the criticism on her voice! She's not a professional singer! I am sure that will be taken care of with some training if she starts a career in singing.
She just got an offer by a local filmmaker here in Denver to be in a movie that will star Cyndi Lauper. it was just on our news. The movie happens to be about women her age trying to start a singing career.
I think we are supposed to find her inspiring because she is very homely and unattractive and therefore she is supposed to be untalented...but she IS talented (just homely). She we are to be inspired because of that!
Didn't an unattractive guy win the first season of that show too?

I love the woman! I'm already working on a Susan Boyle costume for Halloween.
Before or after the "makeover"?
None of you seem to get it. The fuss is not that she is any better than many other singers, especially those working on Broadway. In fact, if you watch only her performance, the reaction would of course be, "Wha?"
The interest lies in watching a middle-aged, seemingly lonely woman, who has deferred her dream of being a professional singer in order to take care of her mother, finally being given her chance. I'm surprised that people on this board, who have no doubt enjoyed the many "star is born" stories told in Broadway musicals, don't appreciate the real-life version being played out on an international stage.
When you first watch her backstage and see this frumpy, overweight cat-lady with bad hair, and then hear her say she wants to be as good as Elaine Paige, your eyes roll just like the cynical twenty-something shown in the audience. Most everyone expects a real disaster - or at best a mediocre karaoke singer.
But she's much better than that, and while she needs more polishing (it was her first time in front of a large audience, after all), she stunned everyone, with both her voice and her courage.
If you can't enjoy that, your cynicism and bitterness are the problems, not her performance.
Well put marknyc.
I completely agree with the OP. I've had more than enough of Susan Boyle already.

I don't see a disconnect between how she looks and how she sings. It seems to have shocked the rest of the world that someone who's not so attractive could have a passable voice, but it really and truly isn't a big deal. And if she weren't all the ugly ways you described her, her story wouldn't be a story at all.
But she's much better than that, and while she needs more polishing (it was her first time in front of a large audience, after all), she stunned everyone, with both her voice and her courage.
She's much better than what? Seriously, her story is the hook here. Her voice is fine, but it's not extraordinary.
If you can't enjoy that, your cynicism and bitterness are the problems, not her performance.
Sweet pea, your post is dripping with bile, so don't be pointing that bitter finger elsewhere. As for cynicism, I find the entire affair to be cynical and I've been saying that since the fervor began.
There was no bile in my post. The only criticism was contained in the last line. The rest of my post simply expressed confusion that people here didn't seem get the joy of her story. And I never said she was ugly - I said she was middle-aged and frumpy, which I think is accurate. It's not just about how she looks - it's about her story and what she appears to be: a hopeless dreamer. But when she proves herself to be more than that, most people who aren't cynical are moved. As the posts before mine prove, that magic doesn't seem to work on this board.

This board needs to stop making fun of Susan Boyle... She's done nothing unto society that is at all negative. I think it's rather nice that people have taken interest in someone with a positive story.
"I think we are supposed to find her inspiring because she is very homely and unattractive and therefore she is supposed to be untalented.."
You aren't "supposed" to do anything. " She's very homely and unattractive"? Maybe in your eyes, but don't state it as fact.
I'm also sick of reading the criticism of this woman. "She can't hit the low notes".... when and where did she claim to be YOUR idea of the best singer on the face of the earth?
It's got to be jealousy. I can't think of any other reason to put down this woman who never did a thing to anyone. She had the chance to follow a dream and she took it. You haters are really mean.

It's more the people who are claiming that she is omg teh greatest singer evar. I don't have anything against Susan Boyle, herself.
I see, spork. Well, I personally haven't heard anyone claiming she's the greatest singer ever, but why blame Ms. Boyle for what others are saying? She certainly never claimed to be any such thing.
Oh, I'd like to add that she's pretty damn good.
I don't blame Susan Boyle for grabbing her chance. I'm just tired of the Simon Cowell machinations. They knew she could sing before she got on that stage. The camera shots were all just too perfectly edited. Cowell sees her as a novelty way to sell a lot of records, just as he saw wrestling stars as a way to sell records before AI, according to his biography. If I'm going to be manipulated, I'd like it done with some subtlety.
I agree with the first post too. Whilst I do think she's a brilliant singer and should get the credit she deserves, it's starting to get a bit boring now as she is mentioned practically mentioned 24/7 by radio, television and newspaper.
I kind of have to side with TWOP.
Don't get me wrong, the first time I saw the video of Susan's performance, I cried. The second time, I cried. By third or so go, I was thinking, "yes, I get it...she can sing." That's not to say I don't think there isn't a speck of talent within her. It's just that I'm getting tired of everyone and their brother mentioning it to me "because I love Les Miserables".
That being said, I really do wish the best for her, truly.
"Yes, the brutalities of progress are called revolutions. When they are over, men recognize that the human race has been harshly treated but it has moved forward." - Les Miserables
Are we sure "she" isn't really Phillip Seymour Hoffman in drag?
I'm not convinced he isn't pulling a Joaquin Pheonix.

I too am getting a little tired of Susan Boyle. However, I'm more bothered by the people who endlessly trash her. Yeah, she's not the best. But really?
This is the truest thing ever said in the world ever.
AMEN.
"I don't care how mediocre her voice is, fat, ugly people who don't own tweezers or have a groomer should not be allowed. Present company excepted, of course."

This Sueleen vs. Dollypop fiasco has eclipsed Hilary Duff vs. Faye Dunaway.
Hell hath no fury like a jealous theater queen. Face it, and you can all deny it until the chorus boys come home, but she is living your dream. A perfect singer? It was her first performance in front of a crowd that big and on TV, to boot. Pavarotti canceled performances at the drop of a hat, Streisand didn't sing in public for twenty years because people like you demand perfection that can't be obtained. You're tired of all the attention? Too bad, it's not about you.
