A CHRISTMAS STORY will play The Theater at MSG. WHY?!?

Posted: 6/10/13 at 4:35pmDid anybody see the Grinch when it was there last year? How were the audiences for that show and the production values? Looking at the ticket prices for this show, I'm actually shocked at some of these ticket prices.

Posted: 6/10/13 at 4:52pmThe seating chart shows they aren't selling the seats for the entire far left and right sides. That's quite a few seats. Also very strange that they end Dec. 29, the kids are still out the rest of the week.

Posted: 6/10/13 at 4:54pmMost "holiday" shows end the weekend directly after Christmas. Which I always found bizarre. They could squeeze at least another week of high grosses in.

I've been to several productions there. Wizard of Oz several years ago, seats were far left front portion....LOTS OF KIDS, production was fine. Wintuck (two years) (Dead Center Lower level) WAS A SNOOZEFEST, more kids than adults, young kids. It snowed indoors for them, all over the freaking place. I HATED IT!!!!!. But I'm a gluten so I went back the next year. Also saw 101 Dalmations (last row center top section), mthere, more kids, noisy ones. Production was okay.
They sell circus like souvenirs aimed at the younger ones. If you can find a child bring him/her.

Posted: 6/10/13 at 5:22pmDon't the seats have cup holders? That's probably why.

I don't remember the cup holders but that might have been part of the latest renovation.
Oh yeah, I also saw Harry Connick, Jr. many years ago there. NO KIDS at all and was quite a wonderful concert.

Posted: 6/10/13 at 6:01pmDamn very disappointed by this news! I missed it the first time and now after the Tony performance I am really interested in seeing it but The Theater at MSG is huge! I have seen Wintuk twice there and had good seats in the front but when I saw Norah Jones there I was further back and I could barely see her! I might suck it up and just get tickets ugh!

Posted: 6/10/13 at 6:06pmSo... will it not be a Broadway engagement then? The Theatre at MSG is not a Broadway house. That's what strikes me as the most odd.

I believe Pasek and Paul made a comment about wanting it to keep returning to New York in general every Christmas, so while it's not Broadway, it's New York.
I've seen A Christmas Carol and Annie at the Theater at MSG, and they were fine, but I just wish this show would get to return to Broadway as it rightfully should. I wonder if any of the original cast from the Broadway run will return - Johnny Rabe, John Bolton, Erin Dilly, Dan Lauria, among others were terrific.

Posted: 6/10/13 at 6:57pmI just want an original broadway cast recording. I love the recording currently out but so much has changed that it's actually kind of disappointing that "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out" wasn't recorded as well as all the changes. And this cast was really wonderful. So I'll try to go back and see it again this year but I really just would love a new cast album.

Posted: 6/11/13 at 12:34amI agree, AKarp. I also would like to have Johnny as Ralphie and Dan as Jean Shepard recorded, as well.

So glad I saw it twice last year. Will not be running to MSG to see it. What a horrible idea.

Posted: 6/11/13 at 1:23amNot sure how it works since most of the MSG shows are tours, but does this mean they can actually pay the actors less now since they won't have to stick to a Broadway production contract?

Posted: 6/11/13 at 10:47amI saw the Grinch there. TERRIBLE place for theatre. This is horrible news. I missed it this year but would NEVER see another piece of theatre there. HUGE space with a TINY stage. Horrible. I'll never go back. I saw Christmas Carol and Grinch... both were terrible experiences.
