While this is good, there is still a plethora of bad news. The torch building will be just as bad if not worse than a casino. And after what chenoweth is doing to sneakily widen her base, I have no hope for the future.

Take heart, we must have hope even in the face of adversities. Sometimes hope is all we have.

I wonder if all those groups will still get their millions in "dirty money"
They did the right thing. Hopefully this is dead for good

These people should have voted againstthe 2013 referendum then. Building a casino(s) in NYC is a matter of NY state law, why are these people only coming out of the woodwork now? They’ve had 10 plus years to speak out against it."
The referendum was put on hold for ten years and when it returned the political culture of the city and Albany had changed. The Community Advisory Boards (CACs) that are rejecting these casinos are aware that the elected officials who appointed them won't get re-elected if they let goons like these casino developers run all over them.

In all likelihood, they wouldn’t have gotten that money anyway. Not in full, at least.
Glad it was rejected- but jeez it remains baffling to me that AEA was somehow backing this project. Really an embarrassing stance for the union.

NYT: The Last Standing Proposal for a Casino in Manhattan Is Voted Down

I like a good casino experience every once in a while, I'm not a hypocrite. But it seems that the industries who keep pushing the casino seem to be misreading the room. Mamdani's surge in popularity indicates a tide turning away from late-stage capitalism towards exploring elements of socialism. A casino, which is a literal bread-and-circuses money machine, is the EMBODIMENT of late stage capitalism: you pay to experience "money for nothing" and get nothing.

I honestly don't mean to be difficult, but how can you say you "get nothing" in the same paragraph where you say you "like a good casino experience every once in a while"? My family members who go to casinos enjoy it together as a form of entertainment, not really much different than when my friend and I go to a Broadway musical. And they rarely come out as far behind as we do, financially speaking. Clearly people who enjoy casinos get something out of it for their money.
I personally don't go to casinos at all, but I'd hate to think that socialism would imply some kind of lack of freedom to choose to patronize casinos for those who enjoy it.

The Coney Island proposal is, imo, the worst of them all. It would utterly consume and destroy the area.
I have felt all along it will land in the Bronx at the foot of the Whitestone Bridge even though that community does not want it either. He won't let $115 Million slip by.
