Charlotte's "though" doesn't really bother me.
But what DOES bother me is the way Donna McKechnie sings "play" during "play me the music."
It sounds more like "ply" or "fly."

Posted: 10/10/06 at 1:53pmIf all you're going to do is complain about tempos and how the original cast recording was better, then shut up and buy the original cast album. And if you think the dancers can't dance like they used to, then you start taking dance classes and work your butts off and audition.

No one said they can't dance as well. In fact, they dance JUST as well.
It's just blatantly obvious that the opening doesn't pack the punch it should. I can't think of one logical reason as to why it should be so slow.

Posted: 10/10/06 at 2:41pmI just got the new recording. I bought the only one the Barnes and Noble had - unless there were more and someone else already got them, but I doubt it. My favorite song is "At the Ballet." I think it's one of the best melodies. Although, I'm not sure I like the way Deidre Goodwin says "Well, not to her. Well, not to us..." She sort of looses her support. I wish she had sung the "well, not to us..." part. I think that would have been more interesting, but whatever. I don't think it's a great score, but I think it has bits and pieces that are really great, like the part where Paul sings "Who am I anyway..."

Just got the recording and I'm very happy with it.
I love "At The Ballet". The harmory is amazing and Mara Davi's voice....WOW!!! Love the extended "Hello Twelve,..." and I'm so glad they put "Nothing" in the right spot.
Only two down sides. "I Hope I Get It" is slowed down a little. Actually did the dancing to it and found it harder to do it slowed down. The second, Charlotte's "Music & The Mirror". She clearly doesn't have the vocals for it. A shame.
Other then those two things, it's a great soundtrack...um...recording. And the insert has some good pictures, all the words, the synopsis & a nice little excerpt from Hamlisch's journals.
Definitly worth spending $15.

I got a theory that the OBC's "I Hope I Get It" tempo was conducted a little too quickly, because we did a production of ACL, and it was that same tempo.
Otherwise, I was very pleased. The singing voices are superb, and the orchestrations are just as fresh as they were in 1975, especially if the NYC orchestra could be a lot better than was recorded (they're entirely different musicians, from LA, I believe). The album is interesting, save for a minor glitch from 2:25 to 2:40 which prevented us from hearing "He doesn't like the way I look, he doesn't like the way I dance, he doesn't like the way I..." on my copy. Anyway, it's really good.

Best Buy here in Princeton, NJ had at least a half dozen copies out by 11am this morning. Our Borders got in a number of copies too. I thought I would have trouble finding it as trying to track down Wedding Singer, The Drowsy Chaperone, and the other recent cast recordings were next to impossible when they came out.
I'm over here loving it...but then again, I never saw the original or listen to the original save for a few clips on the site that should not be named.

Josh, what are you saying?
That when you did A CHORUS LINE your opening tempos were the same as on the revival CD?

All the tempos on the original cast recording were fast. Goddard Lieberson always did this: partly to preserve as much as possible on a single disc, and also because he was of the belief that without the benefit of "seeing" what was being sung, audiences needed the energy of faster tempos. All his cast recordings are like this.
"I Hope I get it" is too slow in this revival, but you can't really compare it to the tempo on the OBC which was never the way it was done in the theatre.

Anyone else notice that in one of the pictures of "the line" in the booklet that Mike Cannon is in there as Mike instead of Jeffrey Schecter? Didn't Jeffrey have an ankle injury in San Fran?

I just got it and am listening to it now. It's great and I love hearing these new voices sing these classics! The new orch are great too!
Edit: Nothing can come close to the original, but this one does get pretty damn close! And I was hoping for the original cut overture.

"But what DOES bother me is the way Donna McKechnie sings "play" during "play me the music." "
Munk - I thought I was the only one!
JOSH - I'm not sure what you mean...I hear the line "He doesn't like the way I look, he doesn't like tyhe way I dance" and then it cuts off, with he music and dancing. Did you not get the line?
The original is cut off, too...as is the show.
I just got home and I have been listening to it for the last two hours. The only problem I have, vocally, is in AT THE BALLET - Deidre is a bit nasal (on "stairway").
RentBoy - she doesn't sing it because she's unhappy about that fact.
"is anyone able to send "And" to those of us who bought the actual CD?" seconded!
I LOVE the extra ballet music in the Opening. I forgot. It's Mark, Connie, and Don whose parts have been extended in the montage. They also cut it nicely so the actors continue each other's lines, as it is.

No, I get why she doesn't sing it, and it sounds fine, I just was expecting her to sort of sing that line in a tiny falsetto, but whatever, it still sounds good.
Charolette sounds pretty good on "Music and Mirror" - but a couple of her pronouncations are a bit much. They probably sound fine in the theater, but it's too much on a cast recording. And I like the porno dance music at the end.

That's when the cast comes out naked with a different head shot.
